    The great gray is a truly magnificent owl species. Thanks for all your efforts. If I ever find myself in the Jackson Hole region again I' love to look you up. I've been to at least a couple of the photo galleries in town and assume that you have one also. Thank you, thank you. Wonderful stuff.

    Love your owl hunting and images. Following you and Steve Perry really has whet my palette for wildlife photography. It is your fault I have been spending money toward that end. Your explanation of the EV compensation in various lighting situations is very educational. The premise of doing it is easy, but tricky situations in the real world make it a little more complicated. Watching you in your situations helps. Just wondering, don't you ever use Auto ISO in Manual? That's what I primarily use. It seems to me, you use Aperture priority most of the time.

      Yep, I hope I do. Last year was such a hard winter, none of them nested. I hope they have recovered and have a great nesting season this year!

    You have thee best videos Steve, I ADORE your owl videos, your enthusiasm for these magical, mystical feathered earth bound angels always makes me smile. Owling is incredibly difficult, but always worth it after months of research, walking, driving, gasoline, etc. I am ALWAYS looking forward to your owl videos, above and beyond anyone elses :)

    You are expert at finding the Owl Steve. Nice of Owl to sit still for you on the fence post too. Is it the same owl or different ones? I noticed this one has a lovely necklace of white feathers. Superb images. The owl and moon video bit is great. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks! I’m not sure about how many different owls I’ve photographed recently, they’re really difficult to identify as they mostly look the same.

    What a cool opportunity! I photographed Great Grays up in Montreal all those years back, but having just moved to Colorado a few months ago I think I need to get up to Wyoming and try to get some images of them up there :) You got some really nice shots, although I especially liked the B-roll of the owl in front of the moon at dusk! I've subbed and will look forward to more videos.

    Such an great love affaire between the owl(s) and you! A practical question: You talk about private property where you have access and another where you don't. Where do you get that information?

    • @SteveMattheis
      @SteveMattheis  6 років тому

      If a landowner has given me explicit permission to be on their land, I have access. Otherwise, I don’t.

    • @CarloDidier
      @CarloDidier 6 років тому

      So you just asked (supposing you know who the landowner is). Thanks!

    Hi great vid Steve, just a quick question as I’m about to buy the D500 and the 200-500mm how does this combo compare to something higher megapixel like the D850 with less reach but more resolution?

    • @adamaj74
      @adamaj74 6 років тому +1

      The D850 with DX crop is 19.4 megapixels compared to the D500's 20.9. I have a D800 and a D500. I use the D800 for people and the D500 for wildlife, though I just started with wildlife. Here are some sample images I took with my D500 and 200-500mm:

    • @SteveMattheis
      @SteveMattheis  6 років тому

      That is a wonderful wildlife combination. Both the D500 and the D850 are fantastic. The D850 is more ‘flexible’ however as you can shoot it in FX or DX mode. Because the number of pixels is essentially the same for the D500 and the D850 in DX mode, the D500 doesn’t give you any advantage in terms of ‘reach’. The D500’s virtually unlimited buffer is the only real advantage I see for the D500 - and I rarely shoot with the D500 now that I have the D850.

    The big disadvantage on wildlife photography:
    you talk, you miss the shot
    You are the wildlife photographer but let me give you an advice...shut up and photograph xD
    talk later or before xD or do a voice over

    • @SteveMattheis
      @SteveMattheis  6 років тому

      Good advice... I’m still trying to figure out how to make it all work.
