    Great comeback. My dad took me to this one. We left when we were down 23-10. Thought it was over. We listened to the game on our radios on the way back to the car on the other side of the Salt River bed. Oh boy, my dad was pissed we left....taught me a lesson at 15 years old that a game is never over till its over.

    I was at that game! We were at the very top row on the east side on the 50 yard line. (Our old Wranglers seats). If you look carefully after the Cards scored the winning TD, you can see the white drink cups flying around. Everyone threw their cups up in the air in celebration. Total pandemonium! The night before, ASU came back to defeat Oregon State in similar fashion. Same celebration! Good times. Thank you for sharing!

    I've been following the Cardinals since they came to town. Back then Phoenix PD officers would give away special player cards if you asked them, I was 8 or 9 back then & still have the cards to this day. It hasn't been easy being a fan, but nice to see this video of a classic W.

    This is the last road loss by the 49ers (last loss in the decade of the '80s) until Week 1 of the '91 season when they lost to the defending SB champs, Giants (rematch of the NFC title game from the previous season). Now I see why after choking away a 23-0 lead on the road. Good on them. lol

    • @cjs83172
      @cjs83172 6 років тому +4

      Though it was not immediately evident. The following week, things got even worse for the 49ers with Montana back at QB with a 9-3 home loss to the Raiders that Bill Walsh would later call the blackest moment of his 10-year career as a head coach. That loss dropped them to 6-5, but a week later, John Taylor's 95-YD punt return against the Redskins in a must-win MNF game for both teams saved the 49ers season, and quite possibly the 49er dynasty. The 49ers would not lose another meaningful game that season (which included a 48-10 blowout of the Chargers in the only NFL game I ever attended) and would win their third Super Bowl of the decade.

      C. K. Yes, but to be fair it works the other way too. They beat the Jets 23-10 in 89, so if the Jets managed two more touchdowns in that game- they would have had to be defensive because the Jets couldn't score- San Francisco would have lost. So these margins are razor thin.

    I remember watching this game and being absolutely furious. It wasn't very often that a Bill Walsh team would cough up big leads like this, but this was one of them. For the 49ers, the frusteration would continue the following week. They lost 9-3 at home to the Raiders and it looked like the season was pretty much over. Despite dropping to 6-5, they would win 4 out of thier last 5 games {the one loss was a meaningless game at home to the Rams the final week of the year} to win the NFC West {Ironically, both the Saints and Rams also finished 10-6 that year as well} . They would of course go on to beat the Bengals in the Super Bowl in a dramatic finish 20-16 so that has taken at least some of pain of the brutal loss.

  • @POWERSAW1980
    @POWERSAW1980 10 років тому +5

    Can you imagine if the Cardinals had moved to the NFC West in 1988 instead of 2002? Their playoff drought might not have lasted 16 years. They could have beaten Atlanta, New Orleans, and the LA Rams. Why even the Niners would have had trouble with the Cards back then. AZ had the defense to stop SF's offense. I believe the Cards also beat the Niners in '92. Not to mention travel would have been much easier back then, too. Those east coast road trips hurt AZ every year. Having only 1 east coast road trip (ATL) and 2 west coast road trips (SF & LA/ANA) would have been much easier travel wise and that would have made a difference.

    • @ProfessorBMedia
      @ProfessorBMedia 10 років тому +3

      Totally agree with you and in '92 when the Cardinals upset the Niners that was the game if I recall that Steve Young missed that game when he came down with the flu and Steve Bono started in place but the Cardinals had a good defense and their coordinator was the late Fritz Shurmur who later was the Packers DC under Mike Holmgren in Green Bay when the Packers won it all in '96 and as for the Cardinals they were not as bad back then than people think back in the late 80's through the early-mid 90's but they resided in the tough smash-mouth NFC East teams combined to win 7 out of 10 Super Bowls between 1986-95. The GIANTS and Redskins combined to win four titles in six years from 1986-91 and the Cowboys of course won three titles in four years from 1992-93 and since moving to the Southwest in the first 19 years in the dessart between 1988-2006 the Cardinals had six or seven different head coaches and made the playoffs just once and they had some good players but the Bidwill family did not give out long term contracts.

      +Brian Davis (Professor B) Absolutely. And of course, those plane rides to and from the East Coast to New York, Philadelphia, and Washington didn't help either. In the West, Atlanta would have been the only tough road trip distance wise. San Francisco and Anaheim would have been easy flights. New Orleans would have been the same as going to Dallas maybe a little longer.

      Yeah they would have because the Rams would have only been 9-7. That year there was a 2 way tie for the NFC East and a 3 way tie for the NFC West. All 5 teams were 10-6. Eagles had swept the Giants so they won the East. The 49ers were 3-1 vs. Saints and Rams so they won the West. The Rams had the better conference record so they got the last wild card. Giants and Saints both 10-6 got nothing.

    With the execption of Neil Lomax and Kurt Warner, the Cardinals haven't had a legitimate QB

    I wonder who ended up winning it all that season?? Oh yeah, My NINERS..... They finished the 88 season 10 Wins and 6 Losses..... And Won Super Bowl XXIII over the Bengals.... That was My NINERS 3rd Title, the following season They finished 14-2, and DESTROYED the Broncos 55-10.... How many titles do the Cardinals have?? Oh nevermind, they're 0-1 in the Super Bowl.... Those pesky Steelers.
