It’s also worth mentioning that the Germans were the first of the European powers in WW2 to begin using Strategic bombing on cities, the first city being Luftwaffle in Poland but if that was the first raid of the war(at least in the European theatre I don’t know about the war in Asia so I can’t comment on that and I could be mistaken). Basically the Germans bombed an ally city of Britain and Britain was like “fair’s fair”
Bens german is the best from all the cast members and generally really good for English people. Most stunning how good his pronunciation of “ch” is. I love him. :)
I don't know anything about bombs, but does it really work so easily that Ben (or a real soldier) can just press a button and let the bomb fall? I can't imagine it works like that.
It both is, and is not, as easy as that. Once you open the bomb bay doors you press a button or flip a switch and the bombs fall. You did, of course, have a dedicated bombadier to make sure you’re on target and to flip the switch, while the pilot and co pilot were different crewmen. Actually hitting your target is the hard part. Especially during the safer night bombing runs. Both sides would impose light discipline so that the target wasn’t literally glowing. Plus the lower you flew the easier it was to hit. But you had to take into account forward travel speed, wind resistance, and the fact whoever you were bombing was probably spitting flak into your face while fighter planes were diving down upon you like some kind of hawk.
Those were industrial targets. The equivalent cultural targets in Germany were Rostock and Lubeck, though they still had some industrial significance. Rostock, for example, has always been a major naval port.
I love the bit about the gift shop Horrible Histories is great!
It should be pointed out that Lübeck did have a port and sizeable shipyards. So it wasn't just targeting cultural centres
