I used to be just like this, but then I really thought about it over the course of a few months. I came to the conclusion that your life may end suddenly, and I want to watch my favorite things before that time comes. Just like music, film (anime) is a temporal art-form. It is not like a painting, which exists permanently. It exists temporality as the medium it is made in, and that’s how it’s meant to be enjoyed. It exists temporarily, only as you watch it, and that’s what makes it even more beautiful in my opinion. Don’t hesitate to watch something because then it will be over, enjoy it that much more knowing that it will end.

I almost write the same comment, man. I respect Arkada's thinking, but I disagree with him. The feeling that we are mortal and we can die suddenly just makes me want to experience the most I can from life. You know, family, friends and, obviously anime.

This is absolutely not just a you thing. I've had that kind of feeling twice: first after finishing Hunter x Hunter, and then again after finishing Sangatsu no Lion. It's the absolute worst, because they were both such great experiences. My first thought after finishing both of them wasn't "Wow, that was such an amazing series!", it was "Wow, I'm never going to have that kind of experience ever again." And so yes, I'd say most seasoned anime watchers have developed this wariness about watching anime they know they are going to have an intense experience with.
In the case of those two and Made in Abyss though, the source material is keeping me going........
As long as I don't read the latest HxH chapter, there's always more......

I have this experience SOOO MANY TIMES. Both for series that I already watch (and totally love) but cannot continue ( Sangatsu no Lion season 2, Made in Abyss movie 3, and until recently JoJo part 5, and many more ), and also the shows that I KNOW for a fact that I would love, but never get to (Land o Lustrous, Death Parade, Dorohedoro, and also many more...)

Hey you seem like a pretty cool anime fan whose seen alot of anime. I'd like to talk to you about anime in this comment section. The topic is a wierd topic it has to do with L from Deathnote, Miyuki from Lucky Star, Orihime Inoue from Bleach, Mutsumi Otohime from Love Hina, Sawako Kuronuma from Kimi Ni Todoke, Scheska from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Kotomi Ichinose from Clannad. I know pretty misfit group of characters there, but I'd like to get you're opinion on some things regarding all of them.

This perfectly expresses what I feel and why I do that with some anime, the whole concept of once I've watched it then its gone and I'll never get to have it again. This feeling is intensified 100X when I know that the season will be the last. I've had this feeling most recently with Oregairu and Kimi To Boku, but I am glad that I got to experience that amazing anime and the fact that it affected me so much just goes to show what an amazing show it was. But I will always love watching anime and won't stop anytime soon and I am always looking forward to finding the next hidden gem that will make me feel like that again.

I've had a very similar experience with Makoto Shinkai's films! I sat on Your Name almost until Weathering with You was released, and have been waiting for the right time to watch that film ever since. I haven't loved everything he's done (looking at you, Garden of Words) but 5 cm/s and Your Name were so impactful for me that I know I want to at least try any film he's made. Part of my hesitation is that watching Your Name left me in a weird mood for like a week and I need to prepare myself for that, but a big part is that I'm afraid of the possibility that I'll know for certain there won't ever be a film that gives me the same experience that 5 cm/s did when I was a kid. But what's ultimately convinced me to watch Weathering with You sooner rather than later, is I know I'm not the same person I was when I first watched 5 cm/s and I'm even more afraid that if I wait too long then his stories just won't hit me the same way anymore, and the possibility of being unable to relate to a movie that could've been one of my absolute favorites if I'd watched it sooner is much worse than my fear of watching it too soon

I agree shinkai movies are not something to watch frecuently, 5 cm/s is an example, that movie broke me like a dry stick, your name is magical from start to finish, weathering with you has good intentions but fails were your name succeded, main characters; and is not a movie that i will rewatch any time soon, and garden of Words.. well... at least is pretty

I kind of get how one get to that point: maybe you liked this ongoing series but you don't want to wait 1 week (or more when it gets delayed) , so you wait until it finishes airing to watch it all in 1 sitting, or at least that's the plan, but life gets in the way an you get other things to take care of an you keep postponing it an so on, the real question is "can it still be called your favorite if you haven't wached?"

    I feel like there are a pessimistic and an optimistic side to this;
"I might never see another show like this again" vs. "The idea that I might eventually find a show that gives me the same feeling, or even greater, is exciting.
I only did what you describe once, and that was when I realized that Sangatsu no Lion was going to be one of my favorites at like episode 6. It was a dark time for me, and I wanted the ability to always watch more. Since the show aired I have seen all of the anime (I am on my 2nd Rewatch) and chosen not to read ahead with the manga. I haven't found anything remotely like it. But I get excited by the idea that I will. And that I might find it where I least expect it.
Life is short, and unpredictable. Things might happen that'll leave you with way less time to spend on hobbies. Or make you have to carefully consider if you want to "risk" getting to know something new that may leave you dissatisfied or if you want to rewatch an old favorite. (or you know, unable to continue pursuing that hobby altogether)
For as long as you still have time you can spend on lots of anime, try to find the ones you're gonna love the most. Watch anime from every decade, in every format and all kinds of genres. And personally, I want to make sure I get to all the ones I am most excited for sooner than later. (although excitement for various things always keeps changing around for me)
There's just so much great anime, that there is no way you could run out of the ones you're going to enjoy, or even love, anytime soon (depending on personal preference, but I still believe this holds true for most people who love anime to a varying degree).

If it makes you feel any better your grandpa got to watch everything that was amazing about LOGH. The ending to the series still has its charm but it's really rushed. With the show having to condense a lot of narrative threads in a limited amount of episodes. The culmination is a fast paced ending with no time to really flesh out the two last antagonists. Hell one of the last antagonists never gets a backstory. Accomplishes nothing and then just dies anti-climactically. Still a masterpiece though and in my top 5 anime of all time.

I feel like this is a common expression amongst things that go beyond simply entertainment, but experiences. As we experience more things, and bear witness to media that has the potential to strike us as profound, change your life, etc, we begin to fear that we're running out of experiences that are like that. And for things that are no longer being made, the fact that you could run out of things that give you that kind of meaning is scary. Sidelining to video games for a bit, this first came up to me a few years ago by a let's player called Stephenplays. His favorite series is the Mother/EarthBound series. Its how he met his wife, how he got the life he has, etc. But for years, he never played the first game. To him, it was always safe. He could go play it. Because once he did, it was over for him. There was nothing in that series left, because the author who made the games, Itoi, said the series was complete, and would never get another sequel beyond the third. He will never have that magic again. its really scary to lose the ability to experience something for the first time. In a world where what is "Marketable" and "Popular" drives everything, you have to wonder "how much stuff will be made that will speak to *me* personally?" So many experiences ultimately lack the follow through they need to stay in your mind, where you can sit back one day and still have it stick out in your mind. Not to mention, the rush gets to you. Especially if you marathon something. Like, it goes by too fast, and you love where you're at, but as you slowly approach the end, you have to wonder "what details did I miss that I'll never be able to see again? Is it right to go this fast?" because ultimately, especially if we're trying something new, we don't know what we like until we have it. And when we have it, its the best time ever... but then its over and you feel satisfied, but also empty at the same time. And you have no idea how long it will take before your next love comes to you. If you take a lot of purpose or meaning from these experiences, as a kind of fuel, it means you'll be effectively purposeless for weeks, months, ever years at a time. Having something *there* is a kind of buffer, and its nice. I mean I have several shows and games that I have started but never finished because I know "Its there if I need it" but as I go in my day by day life, and with the world in the state that its in right now, I have to wonder "Will I *ever* need it?" It feels so much safer to be in a constant mixture of "good, but not great" and anticipation-hype, than to have that wonderful, transformative experience.
For a solution? I dunno. Its always good to have something in the backburner. As more things continuously come out, there is bound to be a 1/100 chance there will be something to your liking, and that can take the place of your previous emergency joy. But at the same time there is a sense of mourning that comes with it. Unless the writer or director or whatever is still active, that's it. That's all you get, and its terrifying. What I've come to is this: you should always be making progress. But you don't need to rush it. You can watch it comfortably, slowly, like a fine meal, and take breaks between your backlog of quality. Blazing through it is as much of an issue as choosing to never watch it. After you finish something, sit with it, enjoy it, and reflect on it, at least a few days, before returning it to your everyday life. In my opinion, a minimum of one experience a year for something like that (in which case I've been slacking cause I have yet to have my 2020 love yet). yes you should mourn the end, but you should be glad that it is in your life, and added to it. It is something that can never be taken away from you.

I don't usually do that though, so I think it is because of the type of show. A more action-based series I just want to marathon and then rewatch immediately lol

Your relationship with a work is never "over"
Whats wrong with watching more of your favorite show just cuz you dont want it to end? Simply rewatch from the beginning, right? I see lots of pepple not even consider rewatching as an option, let alone reading/playig the source material. I see people get overly concerned about never being able to have that first viewing for that specific show ever again.
But personally i have found much more value in what comes after. Because you learn new things about the series and about yourself when you revisit it. That what i mean when i say your experience with a show, movie, vn, ln, manga, etc is never over. Its simply changing. First experience is some with a lot of value, but in my experience, the REAL watch is when you watch a 2nd time.
Thats why i never call something a favorite until ive seen it 2 or 3 times and my feelings either dont change or grow.

You answered your own question. I've watched countless anime shows and i rewatched my favorites 5-10 times, and quite a few i watched twice, probably over 100 anime shows i watched at least twice.
That was a period in my life where i just couldn't get enough of anime and i was a bit younger. I feel that as years pass, i really want to enjoy that first viewing as much as possible. Rewatching a show doesn't give the same amount of excitement and enjoyment of not knowing what will happen and seeing everything unfold, it will never be the same.
I want to be in the perfect mood to watch some anime shows so i save them for that time, if i am not feeling it at a given day, i won't watch it at that time. To be honest this is done only for shows i really enjoy watching and want to have the best first viewing experience i can get.

The only time I'll finish it is if there's another season, movie or spin off waiting. I might have watched 100 anime by now and 90% of them, I haven't completed.

I do this. I have rewatched one of my favorite series well over 20 times to the point where it was a serious issue of addiction that personal friends had to intervene, so I found healthier ways to avoid that. I still rewatch series if I'm really persuasive of myself to do so, but otherwise I'll try to seek out other means to enjoy the series. Sometimes I start series through LN's or VN's, some through Manga or Games or Anime, sometimes the other sources just aren't the same and offer a different experience, good or bad. But you'll never get the same enjoyment as the first time you're able to enjoy an experience, or the enjoyment of getting to share that experience with another even. It's a very bittersweet conflict that just naturally comes with the passing of time and being able to look back on your life.

Same deal with getting caught up on One Piece, seeing the end of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, or watching *most* of the Ghibli films... which I *own* and haven't watched yet, along with Log Horizon, Nadia, and Promare. I have so many things that I either own or have the ability to watch... and don't. I often feel conflicted as to why that is as well.
I think part of it is feeling like a commitment. I know I'll love these things so much, that I never get around to watching them because of the commitment. I'm *going* to spend a whole day doing this thing once I start, and sometimes, it's just so much easier to watch a random cartoon and not think about it, than it is to watch something I'll truly love.

I was so happy to see this video just based on the title alone and after watching it I 100% relate to everything you said. For me, I find that my favorite anime are the ones that take me on a "journey" with them, and when I think back on series I love, it's shows that I took my time watching, and pretty much then avoided consuming anything of them after the fact. I love Guilty Crown, and it took me two years to finish because I worked through it so slowly, and although I know critically it may not be the best, the time I took to enjoy that show made it special at the time. Another series, Kagerou Project, even though I've been in it since the beginning, and I own the light novels, I have never read them! Even though I know the "main story" is in them with a conclusive, happier ending than the other media works, I know if I read them, there will be nothing left to keep me tied to that series I've been in for almost ten years.
I used to be the type of person who would chart out when animes released seasonally and watch as many as I could, and while I did find enjoyment in that, now that I've gotten older, its become harder for me to watch as many shows, even though I watch videos about them and know they are excellent and will reiterate them to my friends to watch them. I think part of it may be due to how fast-paced the anime industry has become since it boomed in the west. The switch to much more seasonal anime and with how many shows come out almost demand that people binge or maximize their watch time to experience so many different stories within a few months, and so it leaves little time for discussion and for series to take you on that journey.
I have a friend who, the moment I mention any series, immediately drops what they're doing and starts bingeing it, even if they're in the middle of another series I suggested the other day (I am not exaggerating). And while I understand that is a new method of watching series with the binge culture that's been created from the rise of Netflix and other streaming services, to me it feels like a disservice to a lot of the shows. I know a big part of my difference in opinion comes from me having such an emotional attachment to those series, and that did come from the week-by-week journey those shows took me on, even amidst the large number of seasonal anime I watched simultaneously. Fandom culture has created this demand to consume all of a series to discuss every aspect of it the moment new content comes out, but there is something magical about being somewhat blind to certain aspects of it. It's not cherry-picking, but for me with Kagerou Project, I know I am missing a lot of the story by never reading the light novels. At the same time though, I've heard what people have said about what happens in the novels, and why would I read them when I'm content with the journey the songs alone have taken me on? You can still analyze and critique work by its parts instead of its whole, and with media like anime, where there can be so many differences in adaptions from manga, game, anime, film, and live action, however you come to that series, and however long you decide to stay in that part of it, as long as it stays special to you, that is what matters. If you don't rush a series and come to the end of it through your own timeline (whether that be watching an episode each time you come home from work, or by watching it all in one day) and you feel it took you to some catharsis or place of enjoyment, that's the journey that matters.

I might add to what you said that this can also be procrastination and/or that we wish to be in the perfect mood and mindset to experience them. But I guess we are overthinking everything and we should simply go for it. Sometimes the most random moments are the best.

This fear is so illogical, it's like tasting your favourite food but not finishing it because you're scared that there will be no more of it left, not marrying the girl you love because you're scared you'll lose the spark after the marriage. In the end you'll be left with only regret if you won't pursue what you love or feel the void afterwards; the former is guaranteed, the latter depends on "how it ends".

    • @mrmusicgamer5319
      @mrmusicgamer5319 3 роки тому

I disagree with these analogies. Food can always be procured over and over again and marriage is meant to have new adventures with your significant other, it will never end, at least for a lifetime.
As for anime, once you've finished a series, that's most likey it. The creators probably won't keep creating more. You're left with whatever exists that we have access to.
Don't get me wrong, I also think this fear is irrational. I suppose I can understand people's sentiment with parting ways with something they don't want to part ways with.

I think it's partly the fear of it being over and done with, as you explain, but for me I've discovered it's also something else - I don't feel emotionally "ready" to subject myself to what I know is going to be an experience that actually makes an impression on me, a viewing experience that makes an impact. It's like I have to be in the right mood, almost brace myself first, kind of.. If that makes sense. I guess I'm afraid of the emotional experience to some extent.
PS: would love to see a video with your views on why it is we feel compelled to buy anime merch, DVDs, vinyl etc. :)

I definitely feel this with certain shows, and adjacent feeling with others. My want to consume generally overrides fears I may have for sequels, but not for some special shows. In my over 8 year of anime watching, I've still not seen Cowboy Bebop beyond the first episode. I've been told episode 4 is the big one. I know I would enjoy it. I've loved other space westerns, like Firefly. Hell, my roommate and I have a portrait print of Malcolm Reynolds hanging high over an alcove in our living room - both because we find the memeing of the Jesus portrait in that way funny, but also because of a mutual love for the show. But I know once I watch it, that's it. I'll have seen what is essentially THE classic anime. And the thought of not enjoying it is hard. But if I just don't do it, then it can just live on in my mind as this fabled show that someday I'll watch and someday I'll love.
One of my favorite bands is The Weakerthans. They wrote songs imbued with pure melancholy, channeling the atmosphere of a cool, overcast Autumn weekend evening with leaves falling around you and the wind lightly brushing against your coat as you walk home from purchasing a record/game/figure/etc you had been looking forward to - it's the end of a pretty shitty year, and maybe it's that purchase talking or the wind greeting you on your way, but somehow you feel a small calm inside you where you can believe that maybe - just maybe - the next one will be better. They found a way to convey lyrics that, had anyone else been singing them, would've come across as too corny or heavy or sappy. They're a special band to me and I love them. They have a couple songs from the perspective of a cat called Virtute, who's caretaker has been in huge slump and barely leaves their home, which is of great concern for Virtute. When I first read the synopsis of My Roommate Is A Cat, I made this connection immediately. And because of that, I don't know if I will ever actually watch the show. It sits there in my "Plan to Watch" ready for me to do so, but I think I'll probably always just have it live in my mind as a connection to that song and that band. It could be a show that I end up loving alongside the song, but just knowing that it's there feels like enough sometimes.

When I know or at least strongly believe that I'm going to love a certain show I put it off for how ever long is needed for every factor to be in the right place. I need to be in the correct headspace, have nothing distracting scheduled that could potentially distract or take away from the optimal experience I want to get, have enough time to finish the show AND process it and if it's a longer show be motivated enough. Also dealing with the fact that I won't have that "first watch" experience ever again after finishing. It's immensly comforting to me when I have a bad day and I remember that to cheer me up I could watch show xxx. An example to this would be me taking 5 whole years since resolving to watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes to finally starting watching it in July. And even then something happened that forced me to stop watching half way through.
In the same vein it's hard for me to rewatch shows for simmilar reasons, as I know I love them but know they require a certain mindset or I'm saving them for a shitty day.

(I know nothing of Made in Abyss, based on your own review it really doesn't look like a show I would like so no worries on spoilers.)
I have actually done that before too haha. For that exact reason - both perhaps worrying that I might not like it as much as the rest but also, like you said, enjoying the feeling of still having more to watch later if I wanted, keeping some mystery and excitement. Sometimes I'd say that even as an artist, inspiration and ideas come from imagining what _could come_ of a show, so once it's over that potential feels gone and lost and so too is my inspiration for ideas and art surrounding it. It very much puts me in a different mindset when a show is "not complete" in my personal experience versus when it is.
I will say that because of the inspiration factor it isn't always a downer for me to avoid the last little bit. Like I said it can actually help to keep inspiring me and my artwork, even to keep inspiring my imagination and thought experiments, and to me sometimes that is more valuable than the ending of the show itself.
I don't have that so much now because I don't watch many shows anymore. Mostly that's just because I pretty much stopped watching any shows or movies for a long time, too many repeats of the same tired tropes burned me out. I am trying to reignite that though, slowly, by trying out new genres that catch my interest. Notably I seem to be a lot more into mech anime now when I used to be not even remotely interested... One withstanding one on my list though is Ghost in the Shell. I've seen probably the same movie three or four times (not always intentionally) and never managed to finish the series, but it's on my list as one of my top favorites. That one's a little special too though because I have to be able to focus well enough to understand what the hell is going on lol. I.... I think I finished the manga? ....Yeah, I'm pretty sure I did. It helps a lot with understanding what's happening in the anime.

I know of people doing this, and I understand why they do it. The hype about your favourite thing might very well exceed your actual enjoyment of it. But personally I don't think it's the right approach, and I'll tell you why.
In short, the after is just better than the before. There is just so much uncertainty about something I haven't experienced yet, and I'll always want to know the truth. If the sequel to my favourite anime is bad, I will want to know it. It won't change the enjoyment I got out of what was before. Most likely though, I'll enjoy the sequel just as much as what was before, if not more. And I'll definitely want to have that. Also, it opens up so many additional ways to enjoy the show. Before I watch something, I only have hope in that it is good. Hope is nice, sure, but it doesn't compare to the actual experience. After I watch something, I can enjoy the soundtrack, fan art, fan fiction, jokes and memes, I can watch videos on UA-cam going into details about this scene, that character or overarching themes. I can share the show with my friends and talk with them about it. And also I can just re-watch it - if you haven't watched it for the first time, you can't watch it for the second time either, which can be another completely new experience. Although I actually only very rarely do that myself, because of another point: I still have a lot to watch which I will like, and prefer to experience something new instead of re-watching. I don't hold off on things I know I'll like because there is more afterwards which I'll like. There are five to ten shows each season I'll enjoy, so even when I've completely emptied my watch list, I'll have all the new stuff to watch forward to. And if I won't, it's re-watch time.
tl;dr: Just watch the thing. Usually you can get a lot more out of the experience of watching it and what comes after than just your hype for it. Also there'll be other things you'll like a lot besides it, and you can still re-watch stuff if you've run out of things to watch.

I do believe that some things come to us at the right time and we shouldnt force them. Maybe there would be something in your life that will change you and then you will know you are ready to watch the thing you have been saving for just this moment. I loved watching Jojo so much, that I am postponing reading the manga for the same reason. I fell in love with Violet Evergarden the moment i saw the trailer and the reviews and sat on it until my grandpa passed away and I felt in me, drowning in my grief and pain, that this was the time for it. The way I see it is that when you find a piece of media that connects to you on such a personal level you want to latch onto it and cherish it for as long as possible.
Konosuba is my favorite LN series but as I continue reading I know I'm getting ever closer to the final volume, the end of everything, and it does scare me in ways. The dozens of hours I've spent reading and watching these characters, all their adventures and experiences that I've seen them go on and all the growth the characters have had along the way will be over.
What I'm thankful for is that the story leans on this and at a point the characters are happy and comfortable with the formulaic structure of the series despite it's flaws and feel the fear and pressure of things changing as the story reaches it's end. The characters are having just as much fun as the readers are on this journey but at some point we will have to end this chapter and move on.
It's an extremely interesting aspect of the series that has helped me come to terms with other series I enjoy ending or being afraid to watch a 12 episode series in fear of enjoying it too much and never getting any more of it. We have to remember that things are temporary and, while we should cherish them while we can, we do have to one day finish it and move on.

Man, I’ve watched every Ghibli film (including shorts) and I’m sad at the prospect of not having any left (my favourite is Kiki with the 2005 dub that has extra lines by Phil Hartman). I’m also someone who has watched 75/100 of the highest rated anime on MAL and nearly 900 anime overall, it’s starting to feel like nothing is going to dethrone any of my top 10 anymore.
Now, there are some shows that I think are great but are taking me forever to watch, like Monster which I started over 3 years ago and I’m still not done, and I’m in a similar spot with Death Note. But that’s more to do with them being pretty dark and me not always being in the mood for that. It’s hard to push through dark long form content.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still finding hidden gems or some new anime that I can add to my pile of greats and my plan to watch list is about 2600, so there’s no worry of running out of anime. I mean, I definitely think it’s sad when you finish a favourite and the journey is over but on the other hand there’s always other shows to watch and fall in love with.

I feel the same but in a different way, I personally only fear rewatching shows that made me cry and it's not like I'm afraid of crying... The thing is, I absolutely love crying but only because it makes me feel normal but then the fact that an anime, a drawing with voice overs made me cry kinda scares me because I do not cry in real life, I've been to 3 funerals of close family members and I didn't cry... That's the part that scares me, I can bawl my eyes out over an anime but can't cry at funerals, why? Why can I form a more emotional attachment to fictional characters than I can real people? Real people I have genuine memories with, people I've loved for as long as I can remember. That thought absolutely *terrifies* me.
Anime that have made me feel this way are Your Name, A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, (ironically) Made In Abyss...
And a recent addition to the list is Episode 1 of Oshi No Ko, that absolutely destroyed more than any show has and even still, an hour doesn't go by where I don't hear the words "I love you... aah I finally said it, that definitely wasn't a lie." It just echos in my head with that scene playing over and over and I couldn't figure out what the feeling was, couldn't tell if I was sad, angry, shocked, then I figured it out... It's grief, in my 20 years of life, the funerals I've been too, things I've seen, nothing has made me grieve before and now the first episode of Oshi No Ko scares me more than anything else because I was able to grieve over it but not over irl things.
Despite all that, the shows I listed are some of my favourites ever, Your Name is still 2nd place on the list of anime that I'm afraid to re-watch, it awoke a fear in me that I never knew I had, memory loss. I've genuinely decided that if I ever am diagnosed with some kind of memory loss that I just want to be put to sleep if you know what I mean, there's just something absolutely heart wrenching about making beautiful memories with people you love, just for those memories to fade into nothingness. And Oshi No Ko despite all the trauma, has already, within 4 episodes... Hell within the first episode, cemented its place in my top 5 anime and I consider the first episode to be one of the greatest first episodes of any media ever made.

I can relate in a way to putting off some series, but others such as Ghibli movies and my favorite shorter series I like watching them for comfort when I feel down.
I recently rewatched Kuroshitsuji, because my friend dragged me back into it. I remembered it an entirely different way. Watching it was like a whole new experience this time around. I think it's due to two things: Watching and sharing it with a friend and taking the viewing by being totally present, which I found difficult to do in the past.
Being mindful and focusing made me see things I never noticed before which made it much more enjoyable on a second watch this time around.

It heavily depends on how you feel when you watch those series, I love anohana, but due to the time I watch it (been depressed.. lol) I can't watch it again, I did watch it twice but the second time I loved it but that painful, different when I watch for example other series that I love like gundam (original trilogy), oregairu (first season), baka to test to shokanju, gundam cca (well this kind of depressed me more after reading the adaptation of beltorchika children), also tokyo ghoul the manga, that I read since it was "raw" in some page when begin its serialization when it end I was so depressed, I read :re like a month after it begin cause it was painfully to read (cause, in the volume version of TG manga they basically spoiled you what happen in :re, but I read the ending on the young jump... There wasn't an explanation or anything related to :re at that moment it was a tragic end and I hate it with my soul, dunno how I make me read :re when it was announced).
The way we save data in our brain depends a lot in a lot of factors, an specific memory can be tied to music or even to how you feel at that time, those electric impulse are related and that's when a new memory is created.... So yeah, what we feel at those moments really are important when you watch or play some material, and sometimes those impulse are so big that every time we wstch that content that memory holds so strong that we began to feel what we felt at that moment, and that's why every time I heard the ending of anohana I cried like a bitch (and also get emotional with beyond the time from TM network :'/).
For series like baka to test I read the novels, with gundam I consume basically any material I could get (even studying japanese so I could read the novels), same with TG I could continue reading and also currently watching season 3 of oregairu and I already read the novels and some anthology novels.
But in regards of anohana... Couldn't watch completely the sequel movie which was technically just a remake with the perspective of menma with some scenes of a year after the ending of the anime... Just hearing circle game (the song for that movie made by the same band that made the opening of the anime), is painful... I dislike to not end stuff so I will force me to finishing it eventually, but... It takes me back and boy, is really painful.

When I read the title of the video, it was a resounding yes but for a completely different reason to what you described in the video but also yes to that too. I thought your title was referring to not re-watching anime that you love in fear of it not meeting your expectations. I do what you describe in the video too but I never really put it the way you did - not watching something in the fear that it will end and there won't be anything more to look forward to. I always thought of it as "saving" it for a time when I needed to be uplifted. I think it's okay to save things but there comes a point where it can be a bit of an issue. It sounds like it might be a bit of an issue for you now. There will always be more good anime to watch. Why deprive yourself of joy? It's fine to be sad that something's over but don't let that stop you from doing things you know you'll like.

That's an understandable point of view for sure. Personally, I used to feel the same way. But now I kinda look at it as Im very glad that I got to experience a certain show or shows and they hold a special place in my heart and gave me a whole new perspective on the world I live in actually. Thankfully for me they were back to back when I first started getting into anime, that I watched all of what today i consider my favorite shows. Berserk, Jormungand, Vinland Saga, gangsta and Banana Fish all come to mind first. I will always be in love with dark action because of those shows and I'm very happy I got to experience them and kind of view everything in the world through a lense of... "Post amazing show viewing" that changed my perspective on alot, if that makes sense at all.. So in a way... Having watched my favorite shows.. my life was just improved mentally and physically too.. berserk and jormungand especially motivated me to work out more lol. So life over all just got better with that anime sitting in your headspace AFTER you finish it, even if you can't watch it again without knowing what it is..

What I've done about this for myself is learning to enjoy the different states of things. While it is enjoyable to watch something for the first time, the full joy - for me at least- is not in that original viewing. There are those enjoyable states of existence pre and post finishing of a piece of media, both of which are pleasurable, but to then be able to return again to the beginning and see all the lead up to that inevitable end with full context... ah, there is something special about that too. The state of existence in which no fear of yet unreached knowledge being revealed before it has been discovered in the natural course of the story ( a complete lack of the fear of spoilers) frees a conversation between two admirers of the same media to then be completely forthright with the twists and turns of the shared dream we call "entertainment". Regardless of the type of entertainment we appreciate, once we have done so solitarily we inevitably seek out other admirers like ourselves to share it with. This cannot be done fully and completely without having freed oneself of the constraints of that a fore mentioned fear. So, in this understanding I find myself in a more pleasurable state of existence after consuming a piece of media completely, rather than leaving it unfinished in my mind, still with hesitation for possible spoiled twists and turns in even passing conversations about shared interests.
This sounded a lot more wordy, and heady than I was expecting when I started. Apologies. In short: A finished anime discussed is more pleasurable than an unfinished one avoided... At least for me. ;P

I did feel like this once, but as I got older with more responsibilities, I prefer to be more selective with what I watch. In the case of Made In Abyss, I binged it on a long weekend. I watched a camcorder version with subtitles of the 3rd movie. It was really well done, it stayed faithful to the manga, which I also binged right after. Now I can go on doing other things while more stuff comes out. Cheers from Calgary!
