- Painting and weathering World War 2 US soldier figures. These figures were 3D printed using my Creality Mage Pro and my Creality UW-02 Wash and Cure machine (bit.ly/46qDsyj). The figures can be seen eating a meal and resting in the back of the Italeri DUKW that I built a few months ago.
The STL files for these figures were created by Artejaol:

"tomatoes.......and things" 🤣
Haha :) Not me, I hasten to add! I use mine purely for 3D printing! 🤣
As a former "green thumb" my self, i laughed at that part too lol.
@@ModelNerd That's what they all say 😆
I nearly spilled my coffee when he said that 😂
That came out great!! A prime example of the adage "an army marches on it's stomach".
Thank you!
I learned something new watching this video, MN...simple but effective (and it never twigged until I saw it)......dry brushing highlights on figures!! A story in miniature, great job in its telling.
Thank you! I might try painting the highlights the "normal" way next time, just to see the difference.
Great scene. Good job on these guys. I think your oil pin wash and dry brush at the end really helped the uniforms.
Thanks. I think so too :)
Nice work Stu. Inspired me to try my hand at figure painting again.
Excellent! Enjoy!
Looks great Stu, the figures look good, and the stowage isn't over done.
Thank you - I'm glad you liked them :)
Never thought of that , that opens up a whole world of possibilities .
I'm glad it was useful :)
Those models look much better than your previous attempts, very good. Excellent diorama as well.
Thank you :)
Nice explanation of the 3D process, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
The skin tones look great, very life-like.
Thank you. That was the bit I found the hardest.
Looks awesome! They look like they are enjoying their tomatoes 😅
Haha! Thank you :)
That looks really good. The figures look very natural and not posed. You can imagine the chatter as they have their lunch. Adding figures, stowage and maybe making a simple diorama can double the build time of a model so you get a lot more value for money out of the kits. Also a simple diorama can add so much context.
Thank you. Yes, the figure are very well sculpted and in refreshingly different poses. I feel it spoils a model a bit when you see a great finish but then recognise the same old figures from a standard kit. One day I'd like to learn how to customize figures.
Nice, if you have the luxury of a 3D printer!!
They definitely aren't super common at the moment, although they are dropping in price and becoming more accessible.
Amazing work Stu,I love How you show all your current Projects at the end,and the DUKW seriously came out great, and I totally agree that your figure painting skills are so much better now, practise makes perfect, and I hope that all your current Projects are going great
Thank you, much appreciated :)
Looks really nice mate. Lovely atmosphere
Brilliant job mate!
Thank you mate
Looks really good 👏
Thank you
Looks awesome mate! Great work my friend! 👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing result!
Thank you
Looks brilliant,
Thanks
Looks Great! Thanks for showing my models on here.
Thanks for creating them!
brilliant .. thank you
Thank you!
Great one. Only the guy with the gun doesn't belong inside. should be standing next to Dukw 😉
Thanks. Yes, he looks a bit odd - but he looks a bit odd standing alongside it without a terrain base too (I tried!) :)
Less is more . . . 😁
Amazing !!!
Thank you
Yes, your figure painting is improving rapidly. Another modeler who has struggled with that is Night Shift. He made some terrible efforts to begin with, trying to paint figures the way he does armor, and eventually looked at videos by other modelers to learn tricks and techniques. Fortunately for all of us he shared what he learned. I recommend checking his figure playlist for ideas.
As for those ration boxes- from what I understand they were typically taken very good care of so they should look pretty clean. For shadowing a wash isn’t a bad idea, but maybe a matte varnish coat first would make it easier to control.
I’m looking forward to the aircraft and tank conversion builds in particular. I have been a fan of great big bombers since childhood, and as an adult I appreciate the challenges of “camouflaging” a vehicle to look like something else.
Thank you. Yes, I borrowed some of these techniques from Night Shift. He really is an excellent modeller.
Thanks for the positive feedback - lots more interesting projects coming up, I hope!
Love your videos! For figure painting, I would say you need to blue tack them to a wine/candle cork, or get a citidal/army painter holder. The cheaper version is pretty good if you don't want to keep handling your figures.
The tip of yours regarding the ration boxes is superb! I will try it out immediately. Thank you very much!!!
Brilliant STU - like the painting technique
Thank you Liam!
Incredible detail figures, 3D printing makes a tremendous difference The painting techniques were very helpful as figures are becoming more prevalent in kit dynamics these days. Valeyo paints are some of the only paint along with Tamiya I have access to. Good paints but difficult use, I'm going to give your technique a go. Thanks Bob
Thanks Bob. I really like Vallejo for small details - but find them more difficult for any large areas. Very easy to mix and thin with water, and the bottles last a long time too.
Great video. Took away some of the fear I have about painting figures . Thanks 😊 I wonder if water colour paints might be suitable for the paper k ration boxes perhaps?
That's a great idea, thank you. I'll have to look into that.
완벽하네요. 👍
Thank you!
Hi there. I have just found your channel on UA-cam and I had to subscribe. What you did there was absolutely fantastic. I am wanting to get into doing dioramas myself so any help I can find I am willing to accept. LOL. Thanks so much for doing this video and I would say blessings to you from England but it sounds to me like you have a British accent. So I will just say blessings to you from Weymouth, Dorset.
Thank you, and good luck in your model building! If you have any questions and my videos don't address them, please feel free to leave a comment - I try to reply to all of them.
@@ModelNerd thank you. That is very kind of you.
could you paint the cardboard boxes with micro kristal klear first, let it dry and then apply the wash. just an idea :)
That's a good idea, thank you.
🤝👍
Thanks
Just a comment for the old algorithm
Thanks for watching
Good work, however Latex gloves, even painted, will start to degrade over time & become brittle. Particularly exposed to natural light & temp fluctuations. Nitrile is a little better, however the sure fire way to know, is many have expiry dates on their boxes.
Fair point...I guess I will have to see what happens!
Very nice but are they supposed to be eating from rations? Give us a backstory :D
They're eating food they found / were given. Hence the bottles and the crate in the DUKW :D
In the u.s. we call it the DUCK😅
So did I :)
Looking forward to seeing the Ersatz M10. I've one in the Panther production line
I really need to get back around to that one soon!
It looks awesome, Stu... and the figures are great! Are you going to put it on a diorama (maybe even with the M3)? Apropos M3, did you check my email? And thanks for the shout out (another cherry popped)🙂
Hi, and thank you Mike. Apologies about the emailed - I've replied now.
I believe it needs a lot more weathering and chipping on the vehicle. The figures are just too clean and helmets again need chipping.
Fair - the helmets could be dirtier. This video was mainly about the figures though, I didn't want to do anything else to the DUKW at this stage.
