    If I was Carl I would ask, “Why do I need the source code or an authorized repair only tool to replace the dvd drive on my Xbox?”
    It would have hit him directly in the industry and forced him to answer.

    • @Taklsdjw093

      Xbox one's DVD drive is cryptographically signed to a particular Xbox one. They do this as part of their anti cheat and anti-piracy mechanisms. ( Xbox 360 DVD drive exploit led to piracy on it.) In this particular case a third party would need some sort of cryptographic access in order to replace the DVD drive, which in turn would weaken Xbox ones anti-piracy technology.
      However, I think this is more of a case of the manufacturers need to make their hardware more repair friendly.

      No I was agreeing, a user should be able to repair their own stuff. The Xbox one is made repair hostel. I think Microsoft should have made in such a way a user could replace their own DVD drive.
      For instance, sell the DVD drives that can be keyed based on serial or something. The current state is disappointing.

      Evade! Though in fairness, you probably want the phone lobbyist on that example. Console manufacturers do have a good reason for tamper-proofing their hardware, but not one that they want to admit to do publicly: It stops people from running unauthorised software, thus ensuring that the manufacturer can take their slice of the revenue for every game sold.

    • @Themoonisachees
      @Themoonisachees 4 роки тому +12

      @@CatzRuleZWorld fair enough, but let's ask the question: is it really too much?
      from a software development point of view, using obscurity as a security measure is equivalent to having no security at all. sure, you can use additionnal ways of ensuring security, such as certificates and encryption, but those tools are tried and trusted, and source code knowledge has very little benefit without the keys, whereas obscurity time and time again is proven to fail as a security measure.
      from the opposite direction, there are many many companies, start-ups and giants, who open-source their programs with no issue and even gain massive security benefits in the way of public reviews and pull requests.
      now, of course i'm sure you can tell that i am biased, so to contrast, i have to admit that source code would be of little use for repair in itself, although it is often used to give a second life to old hardware.

      Ps.: efuses took care of jailbreaking very nicely😈

    • @schumerthd
      @schumerthd 4 роки тому +1

      Jail breaking is easy compared to modifying firmware. Jail breaking an OS only requires access to root. Jail breaking is exporting security falls to gain access to root. An OS works at a high level and is virtually impossible to render unhackable. While firmware, can be encrypted and etched into hardware unlike an OS. An OS works on top of firmware and can be reinstalled at anytime. firmware tell the OS what devices are installed and how to interface with these devices.
      An example of firmware would be your BIOS. I dare you to try and figure out how that works. The files which companies will give you are not readable by a text editor and requires an assembler (or dis-assembler I cannot remember which) to even edit the file. The output of assembler is a bunch of goto statements and switches. If you are trying to modify your BIOS, then you are loading a custom OS or trying to over clock a motherboard which does not allow for over clocking. By the way, if edit the wrong thing, then you cloud brick your processor or mother board.

      It really depends on how the graphic chip was made. The graphic chip is either a processor, FPGA, or ASIC. A processor or ASIC is a easy repair and requires no code. A FPGA uses flash to program itself and if there is water damge then the flash would require re-flashing. Depending on the flash, the process to re-flash might require access through a special connector or could be flash by a PC. The information which would be placed into flash is proprietary and can be reversed engineered.

    It's not about getting all the source code to let users fix bugs in the code, or about getting the exact design of the internals of custom chips. It's about changing a hecking cable that the manufacturer don't care enough about anyway, without getting alerts, having the other hardware combat it like it's a virus, or having legal issues strewn about like they were sprinkles.
    What in the world are they doing..

    You don't need source code for electronics repairs. Just schematics (and boardview). And nowadays a tool, program, that lets you bind/pair the replacement parts with the main system so it knows it is now working with a valid part. Of course they could also just stop using bound parts so they wouldn't need to supply a binding program....
    And most parts that die don't have any real specific coding in them. And if those do die, hopefully the OEM will be so kind as to do that fix. Much like how a doctor forwards a patient to another doctor for treatment that the first can't perform, but only diagnose...

    You only need enough code to tell the device two things, there is a new battery, the type of battery.
    You only need that in equipment designed to fail, causing the consumer to either pay the ' authorised repair " location to erase all data on the device and possibly return only the original case to the consumer, complete with refurbished internals that will have the same underlying issue alternatively, similar to what Volkswagon did, force the device to an authorised dealership tomdownload all data and restart a counter to start the process over again.

    Even the guy that asked the question thinks that source code is like some sort of magic password needed to change a battery.
    Fair play to him for at least trying query the lobbyist, but it shows a clear lack to technical knowledge across the board.

    It's kinda messed up that manufacturers are trying to confuse people into thinking that right to repair is about piracy and creating security issues. Honestly why does a tractor need to have an os that rejects hardware repairs because they don't come from the manufacturers.

    1:11- So....
    Software Developer here.
    You can PROVIDE code, FREELY, that does NOT compromise security.
    If your ENTIRE security model is broken, by access to code (NOT security keys), then your security is SHIT.
    Seriously.
    You can HIDE data values in code, or black them out/replace them with dummy values, AND provide code needed to repair a device.
    The lobbyist is asking about THIS model:
    eg: The xbox/xbox360 have a "chain of trust" where the DVD drive, CPU, GPU, RAM, all are "paired" to ensure none is modified from what came from the factory, and that each is "certified" to work securely.
    In the past, whenever there was a security check from the drive, to the CPU, or from CPU to RAM, data lines could be tapped into and data values copied/sniffed to break security or modify data to bypass DRM.
    Well....
    The problem was that the disc drive could be modified to send data (with a mod chip) into these data lines, and give an "ok" signal.
    This was the NAIVE approach.
    Modern security works like this:
    You establish a secret and public key.
    You use a diffy-hellman key exchange to derive a "shared" private key to secure communication, WITHOUT exposing either secret keys of either party (this is how HTTPS/SSL works).
    You use this secure channel to talk and communicate data, and validate responses to ensure data is valid each time.
    This can be done with video game consoles. You can "stamp" a chip to have a secret key it uses to talk to the other parts of the motherboard (and allow it to be updated later via software), and then each chip establishes a secure channel to the other chips. Then, when one is repaired, the system can be aware, and give a warning / diagnostic, or re-pair everything (wiping certain secure data and forcing the user to re-download, or re-authenticate on their account).
    Yes, eventually, somebody might get the new private key used, if an update happens, but then your security model is gone, and you shouldn't rely on pure data lines to communicate.
    To stop blatant duplication of discs, and playing pirated games, you can rely on blu-ray like encryption, and prevent computers from making byte copies / reading the disc normally. After that, you can't really validate the physical presence if a disc/cartridge, as any "hardware checks" can really be bypassed.
    But... here's the thing....
    With modern games, and always online, you don't "really" care about single-player cheaters, only multiplayer. For single-player, you just need to make the DRM last 2 weeks, and this can be done via software for detecting the data on the disc/memory. You can even provide certain chips for the drive, at a reasonable cost, to RE-PAIR and certify that the drive is relatively safe and easy to repair.
    For multiplayer cheaters, you can detect them with heuristics, and hashes of random files / data sent as well as "honey-pots" on the server, to catch cheaters.
    At the end of the day, they truly just want to stop the problem of "we have a physical game / digital copy on physical hardware, and want to ensure it's a genuine copy, that's not a burned / pirated copy."
    Which, for the consumer, too bad if that means we can't repair our console. PC already has "free reign" over hardware, and consoles need to be treated the exact same in terms of my right to repair them.

  • @DavidMulderOne
    @DavidMulderOne 4 роки тому +1

    Also very important, access to code doesn't allow you to run anything you want on hardware. Take for example some bootloader locked phones without an option to unlock the phone. Even if you know all the software, unless there is a flaw in the software you won't be able to run custom software without opening the device and directly tampering with the hardware. Just to be fair, it can definitely speed up finding mistakes in the security, but yeah, security through obscurity isn't pointless... but it isn't going to help too much either 😅 . His argument just didn't make any sense on any level.

    In all honesty, we DO deserve the source code if and when it is required to repair the hardware. The simple fix is to not design the hardware with software lockouts. They did that deliberately because copyright is worshipped as a god in USA circles (and the lawmakers of most countries) and merely invoking its name is enough to quell completely unrelated issues.

    • @danielson_9211
      @danielson_9211 4 роки тому

      Deserve? Try that crap with windows or any other proprietary system, NO one Deserves any source code you didn't pay for it! You leased the right to USE the software NOT own it. You bought the hardware and own it and it was under warranty, anything outside the warranty isn't covered, if you want to repair it you have to pay the price if it is an option if not you are screwed, you should have done your homework and bought a better product. But you are correct with the simple fix. And as far as copyright being king you dam right it is, Apple, Samsung spent money inventing a chip and producing it (or paying someone to produce it) why in the hell should they give anyone the right to make it and sell it without their permission. Stop buying from companies that do this shesh it's not that hard to figure it out, and stop whining about it.

    The stupid part, getting schematics, or diagnostic tools, doesn't help you break encryption, or let you play any game on any console. And if that is what your purpose is, to copy games, there are plenty of hacking tools out there to do such things already. None of those hacking tools (or most) wouldn't help you diagnose a charging port problem, or add a new touch sensor. The hardware companies/lobbies are using fearmongering tactics to keep money in their own pockets. (One would think Politicians would easily see through that! :-) )

    To everyone asking why you might need access to source code, see my explanation below. I am in favor of right to repair, I just wanted to explain how the source code might be required.
    TLDR: I worked with anti tamper features, they require updating firmware and the OS if a anti tamper feature is triggered.
    Anti tamper features can be triggered by opening a phone case. If the feature is triggered a security key is eased from memory and must be reloaded. A technician can reload the key if they knew which firmware and OS are loaded in the phone and have access to the keys. If a unique key is required, at the very least the firmware must be recompiled. The security firmware has a matching key stored inside and has to be changed as well if a new key is added. Changing the firmware updated the checksum and an OS would detect this and lock the OS till the flag is cleared. A technician might even have to edit a security key in the OS as well.
