You might want to track down a copy of “Planking the Built-up Ship Model”. It illustrates a method of planking that is very close to proto-typical. Ships could not be planked with one continuous board from stem to stern, and by using shorter boards laid on in “Planking belts”, you could achieve a smoother, gap free, planking.

spiling the planks to the hull will allow them to lay flat and eliminate the gaps
