Shakespeare's iconic tragedy Macbeth is a haunting and gripping play about the corrupting influence of ambition, power, and greed. Macbeth, a general in the army of King Duncan of Scotland, is persuaded by his wife Lady Macbeth and prophecies of three witches to kill Duncan in order to become the king himself.
Macbeth kills Duncan while he is a guest at Macbeth's castle. He becomes the king of Scotland but grows increasingly paranoid. To secure his power, he murders more people on the advice of Lady Macbeth. The Scottish nobility starts plotting to overthrow the tyrannical Macbeth.
Macbeth emerges as a complex and twisted figure. At first hesitant about regicide, he is spurred to evil deeds by the ruthlessness of Lady Macbeth, who wants to uphold her husband's ambition above all else. Macbeth descends into madness and tyranny, but there are still hints of the good in him.
Lady Macbeth too goes mad with guilt over her role in Duncan's murder and commits suicide. Macbeth's former friend Banquo, fearing for his life, flees into the night where he is murdered by Macbeth's men on Macbeth's orders. The ghosts of Banquo and Duncan later appear to Macbeth, adding to his torment.
Finally, Macbeth's evil tyranny catches up to him as the Scottish nobles rally an army under the leadership of the true heir to the throne, Malcolm III. Macbeth is overthrown and killed by Malcolm's forces. The play ends with the natural order restored, but only after much darkness, bloodshed, and tragedy.
Macbeth is a chilling play, a profound examination of moral corruption, guilt, and the futility of political violence. It remains one of Shakespeare's most powerful and haunting tragedies.
