I have a 2010 Saab 9-3 aero xwd. Last year a few years after buying my the engine sounded a lil gritty at higher RPMs. I did the oil change and I saw some extreamly fine glitter in my oil filter and a few small pieces hardly big enough to pull out. I flushed the engine with cheap oil and a motul flush treatment. I used motul oil and a motul engine nano ceramic treatment. I had the old oil tested by stonelab and noted to them I saw metal. They found lower amounts than the norm of aluminum in the test but there was something in there they didn't know what it was. My engine is all aluminum except the (I guess) valves, cylinder sleaves, (I guess) cam shafts and a few other things. The valves are magnisium filled and nothing I found was furous. I did have some bad missfires before that oil change due to bad plugs, bad DIC and plugs not gapped right. The car runs perfect when warm but cold starts it starts fast but hard sometimes. I just found it is leaking a lil oil I think from the valve cover. I checked and replaced my oil filter at 2k miles. There is a lot less but I did still see some sparkle in there but so little you could count them. There's no carbon in my coolant, no smoke out tail pipe. It seems a lil flat on power after 4k or 5k RPMs and it isn't burning any oil to note which to me is weird. I've never seen a DI engine that didnt burn a lil oil. I still get great MPH. Could this be my valves?

Typically a bad valve will have a misfire. It's still a possibility. I would recommend doing a cylinder leakage test on all your cylinders. Here is a video describing that test. ua-cam.com/video/WgrfT0LFMhc/v-deo.html If you don't have access to a cylinder leakage gauge then do a compression test to see if you have a cylinder with lower compression. Most auto parts stores will loan you a compression gauge if you don't have one.

WHen do you need a valve spring cooler?

I'm not aware of a production vehicle that has valve spring coolers. They might be used by some OEMs, but I've never heard of them in a production engine.

@@ScottHadzik Thanks for the reply. Valve spring coolers are used in racing.

The valve spring coolers are in the same isle as the headlight fluid, right next to the muffler bearings.

    It's 'height' not 'heighth'.
