  • My favorite married couple in music history Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo who were in the 5th Dimension together in the 60s recorded this funny Laura Nyro song about the female singer (McCoo) asking a guy named Bill to marry her. Wedding Bell Blues! Life imitated art, as after they recorded it, Billy and Marilyn got married and then the song became a #1 hit. A great story that will bring a smile to your face!

The song was composed by Legendary songwriter Laura Nyro who as solo artist had a 3 octave mezzo soprano vocal range. Here songs were so renowned they are recorded by everyone from Barbra Streisand to Blood Sweat and tears, Three Dog Night and Peter Paul and Mary. She was idolized by many icons including Elton John

Laura wrote the lyrics from the perspective of a woman whose boyfriend has not yet Proposed to her, and who wonders, "am I ever gonna see my wedding day?" The song carries brilliant dual themes of adoring love and frustrated lament at the very moment That Billy and Marilyn recorded this song they were in the same situation It was Art imitating life.

Laura Nyro is one of the great "forgotten" talents of that era. There's a very sad saga regarding her son as well. RIP.

Those harmonies are hard to beat even today. I love classic and hard rock, but I'll always have a place for the 5th Dimension.

As an 80's kid Marliyn McCoo is the host of Solid Gold to me. I don't think of her as being a part of a very successful band.

My parents had a 5th Dimension 8-Track and it would play in my Dad's pickup. Just love them. And watched Marilyn on Solid Gold. I would love them to tell the story behind You Don't Have to Be a Star; my late Mom loved that song and had the 45. Laura Nyro didn't get the credit she truly deserved; her songs brought so much joy to many of us. Marilyn and Billy are still together and still singing, one of rock and pop's greatest couples.

Another great interview that went more like a friendly conversation. They are great people with a great relationship. 50 years of marriage and they are still happy! No wonder they made such good music. You have a knack at bringing out the best of their personalities and presenting it to us. Thank you, Adam!

In the early 70's, as a 10 year old white kid growing up in the 'burbs, I adored their music. I played the Fifth Dimension LP "Greatest Hits on Earth" constantly. That was FIFTY years ago! I knew every second of every song. In High School, had it on 8 track; in College, cassette. Then CD. Thank you Marilyn, Billy, Florence, LaMonte and Ron for the soundtrack of my life. Thanks Adam. Dinner's cooking, wanna guess what I'm listening to?

I met Billy and Marilyn when I was a kid in St. Louis. My family had gone to The Chase Park Plaza for Brunch after Church and they were seated near us. Billy actually knew my dad since my dad used to work for KATZ Radio as a news director, so my older brother and I got introduced to them. I remember shaking Billy's hand and Ms. McCoo kissing my cheek and telling me I was a good boy. Then she gave both of my parents a hug and kiss on the cheek as well and they left. My dad laughed later that they had paid our bill as they left. So he doubled the tip for our server. This was in I think 1975 or 76.

I've always loved the Fifth Dimension's vocal harmonies, but the harmony of Billy and Marilyn's souls are even more beautiful. You could post a daily interview with them and I wouldn't complain. Marilyn, you look amazing!
