  • It has been a long and difficult journey, but we stand here proudly today to bring you a robust and unique Sonic the Hedgehog experience that we hope you will all enjoy.
    Green Hill Paradise was born out of a question. A question that has all but torn the Sonic the Hedgehog community asunder:
    Can a Sonic the Hedgehog game be made such that it supplies a rich and robust experience in a fully 3D environment while staying true to its platforming roots?
    We are here to answer this question, not through an in-depth analysis video, not through a lengthy forum post, but through a fully playable video game experience. After 10 months of research and development we believe that, yes, Sonic can not only exist in 3D, but he can THRIVE in it. GHP's massive environment, winding paths, dynamic physics and hidden collectibles provide players with the freedom to choose where they want to go and how they wish to get there. The only limitations are the laws of physics and the player's own skill.
    No Spline paths.
    No Boostpads.
    No scripted cameras.
    No Boost Button.
    Gotta Go Fast?
    Earn it.
    This is Green Hill Paradise, reborn.

    Very good level design. It's as if you took design ideas from skateboarding games, with an open world that has various points of interest and paths that can be taken and interchanged, instead of just keeping the whole thing linear like a rollercoaster.

      I came here to say just this! I totally got a Tony Hawk feel from this, and it really does feel like a match made in heaven. Not really the tricks aspect, as I think giving that a point value would detract from the older Sonic experience; but the open area exploration with platforming elements that still allow some real speed... this would be a really excellent direction to take the franchise someday. Well executed, team!

      Eh I disagree otherwise. Sonic is usually about getting to the goal. I'm not saying exploration is bad but this just seems like too much. It's like a giant sandbox you could just get lost in easily.

    • @Urinal
      @Urinal 6 років тому

      Elucislayer I hear you that the straight line goal idea is the base of the original games but think about if Sonic Adventure and Sonic 06 had an ounce of this then it would have been on the right track. You also are viewing this from the idea of this being completely open world sandbox which I think if developed further you can add features to create various paths all with a similar direction to head in. It's simply allowing us to see the wider aspect of the world and what it can cover. :)

    I've done a few playthroughs of this, so I'll give my thoughts and opinions here.
    1. The camera could use some work. While I think it's pretty decent overall, there were a few occasions where I couldn't see where I was going, or what I was doing.
    2. The spindash could be better. It feels really weak and I'm not a fan of holding down 2 buttons to charge it up. My suggestion would be to increase it's power some, and make it where you charge it up by pressing and holding the roll button. SA2 would be a good place to look for a good 3D spindash I think.
    3. Mach state is really fun, but it would be nice if you could cancel it without slowing down. Maybe if you press the X button while in mach state, it returns Sonic back to his normal top-speed, idk. Other people have complained that it almost feels random when it activates, and while I don't agree with that, one thing you could do is have a momentum gauge on the HUD, and once it's full, you enter the mach state.
    4. While I like the level design more here than in the first GHP, I still think that it's still a bit too open. I like exploration in Sonic, but this is a bit much. Speed, platforming, and exploration should all complement each other in a well-designed Sonic level, but here, each element feels self-contained. At the end of the day, the classic Sonic games were still linear point A to B games, but with options for which path to take. You could explore to find some rewarding secrets or to find the best possible path on replays. Here, the exploration feels like it was put here for exploration's sake.
    5. The physics feel really good, when clipping isn't an issue. About 80% of the time, slopes work as they should, but sometimes Sonic won't roll correctly on slopes.
    6. You claim that the game doesn't have scripted terrain like the modern Sonic games, but I was able to find at least 2 ramps that were scripted to some degree. I could run off of these ramps as slowly as possible, and I would still fly through the air as if I hit it at a faster speed. i would remove the scripting from these since they go against this project's design philosophies.
    7. There's a glitch I found where if you use the air dash from the fire shield to dash into the goal ring, the game will fade to black, and then reset the level instead of showing the results screen and sending you back to the main menu. I'm not sure if it was a one time thing or not, but you still might want to look into it.
    That's all I can think of for now, but if anything else comes to mind, I'll just add on to this comment. Overall, I think this is a fun tech-demo that shows promise, but it could use some work.

      ***** Supposedly October, but there has yet to be an official announcement. Also, don't worry about it! I've gotten FAR harsher reviews in this very comment section. It's all part of the process. We're trying to make a 3D Sonic fangame. Of course we're going to get some harsh critiques here and there, but that's all a part of improving the product for future updates!

      Ew don't disgrace Super Mario 64 by bringing up blast. I like blast as much as the next sonic fan... but an isometic platformer doesn't really compare to an open leveled fully 3D platformer.

    • @spindash64
      @spindash64 7 років тому

      +JRSiebz blast didn't really feel like a sonic game to me. I mean, it worked, but it's not a game where, if you had another character there, you would immediately think of Sonic. It didn't have the same emphasis on momentum based platforming, even if it was there to some extent, and having to defeat all enemies was also a little off

    Neat! Good job, man. But... what is a spline and why do I hate them?

    • @SuperSonic68
      @SuperSonic68  7 років тому +36

      Without going into too much math and Computer Science jargon, Splines are used in Modern Sonic games to keep players following a set path in 3D space. Splines, on their own, should not be hated. After all, Classic Sonic's 2.5D sections could not be done without them!
      The exclusion of Spline Paths from our project was simply to ensure that at no point would the player be restricted to a set trajectory, even when on a loop-the-loop, or corkscrew.

    • @BusterBeachside
      @BusterBeachside 7 років тому +11

      So basically, the loops aren't "scripted", like in official Sonic games? After playing the game, I can totally see the difference there. Comparatively, the loops feel like they're only there for the sake of being there in official games. Here, you actually have to navigate them and such, and you have the freedom to run off the side of them at any point.
      Even if I'm getting the wrong idea about what a "spline" is, I still like that aspect of this. xD

    • @blealleal7676
      @blealleal7676 6 років тому +2

      I don't feel like a spline being on a loop or corkscrew is bad, as long as the momentum is still there, along with the ability to fall off (Without breaking the game or needing to try really hard). That being said, that may be due to Sonic Utopia's use of thinner corkscrews and loops, as I don't seem to find too much of an issue with them here.

    • @CutePuppy351
      @CutePuppy351 6 років тому +1

      I think there should be a use of splines in Sonic Utopia, get's a little irritating falling off loops because you went to fast. But maybe that's apart of the experience, managing your speed. We'll see how it turns out.

    Long time Sonic fan here, I've played a lot of games including numerous fan ones.
    and all I can really say about this is I'm completely blown away.
    Not only is this game absolutely gorgeous, but the control and even the world design are so incredible. This is much better than Generation and that's been considered my favourite Sonic game for years.
    I never minded the boost button, the speed pads, etc.. but not having them works SO well here. I love how you enter a boost-like mach speed when you gain enough. You really are rewarded for going fast, but you have to build it up rather than just tapping a button.
    A full game in this style would easily be the best Sonic game ever made.
    Absolutely amazing..

    It's like looking into an alternate universe where Team Sonic actually learned how to successfully transition Sonic into 3D. No gimmicks. Just Sonic and his speed refined for the current age, and allowing you total control over where you want to go.

    Good shit you guys, great actually! I had a lot of fun playing this and it's taking the right steps toward a good 3d sonic game. Aside from not being able to come to a full stop, my biggest issue was the lack of power in a spin dash, the build up maxes out and doesn't amount to a high speed output. Top notch work though, I really liked this!

    I've gotta say, this was really well done! Aside from a few issues with the camera and physics, the whole thing was really solid and enjoyable. You did a great job keeping the feel of both the classic and modern Sonic games, all while incorporating an open environment. The flow of the level is really quite amazing, so even when you're running through all the various paths, you never feel lost or confused.
    Coupled with several secrets and an awesome movement system, this is by far the greatest fan made 3D sonic experience I've ever seen. Do you have any plans on continuing this with more zones/funtions? Maybe even a complete game? I'm sure there are a lot of people who would love to see that.
    Great job on the amazing work, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what creations you'll be making in the future!

    By Jove, I think you're on to something here. Played the darn thing for 3 hours earlier.
    If this were refined technically, and the level design iterated on, I would be 300% fine with a full game in this style.

    • @Quaternality
      @Quaternality 7 років тому +1

      +kshirka Agreed! And looking at peoples posts about this, I kinda agree the density/complexity could be knocked down a notch or two for "real" levels. Right now it feels like a demonstrative microcosm, which, while fun to play for me because I love exploring, is easy to get lost in, which isnt good for a lot of people. But I wouldnt tone it down to, say, Sonic Adventure levels. Thatd defeat the point.

      It's really weird, from my perspective at least, because I feel like they were going great until sonic 06 happened. It wasn't the concept that was bad but the execution yet it feels to me like they thought people hated how sonic was going up to that point, which then led to many weird games.

      @Blah3210 7 років тому +4

      A lot of people do. It fits their narrative of "if it isn't like Genesis-era Sonic then it must be bad". Even the criticisms that the author of that article made of the Adventure games (camera and imprecise mechanics) are due to their age. Most 3D platformers were like that back then. If Sonic Team decided to make a true SA3 or remake the first two Adventure games for modern consoles then this wouldn't be a discussion.

      @Medachod 7 років тому

      Blahblahblah3210 Sonic Generations was so faithful to most games, though. And whenever you played as Modern Sonic, the camera followed you so well. If Sonic Adventure had that kind of dynamic camera, there is no doubt in my mind that it would be hailed as the best 3D Sonic game ever made.

    • @Blah3210
      @Blah3210 7 років тому

      I was obviously referring to more than just the resolution when I mentioned remakes in my original post. These are basic HD ports, with SA1's having done the bare minimum necessary for playback on HD consoles - it doesn't even have widescreen! A true HD remake would have to be rebuilt from the ground up.

      Well yeah, Sonic 2006 was when the series really went down the drain. Trust me, GHP Act 2 is the direction the official games should take inspiration from. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than the post-Sonic '06 official 3D games.

      New SonicGDK is up! New enemies and configurable stuff.
      Before you upgrade, if you're using any of these meshes:
      StaticMesh'StuffMap.StaticMeshes.Maks_Corkscrew'
      StaticMesh'StuffMap.StaticMeshes.Maks_Dive90'
      Maks_Corkscrew has a very different 0,0,0 pivot now
      Maks_Dive90 is a few smaller
      Keep an eye on the changed models, make a backup of StuffMap file just in case.

    I can say that after completing the game for what i'm assuming is 100%, that this game is fantastic, but of course not with it's fair share of issues.
    {This is my opinion and you don't have to agree to my opinion}
    {Also this list doesn't have any particular order, it's just what first came into my mind}
    {Also, Also, if you find any grammar mistakes, tell me and I will try to fix it}
    The physics felt smooth, but a bit too float-y.
    The level design was overall great, but the beginning felt a bit too cramped.
    Where as the last section where you had to run in a wide open area to the goal felt a bit too lazy.
    The ramps where you had to build up momentum by flying up and rolling as soon as you hit the ground wasn't implemented that well.
    it had a lot of potential, but at some places it felt like it was unnecessary
    The chaos emeralds where hidden pretty well, but we could use some kind of hint to know where they are. (I've collected them all)
    The Spin dash felt like it didn't build up that much momentum.
    while I understand that you want it to be only momentum based, we need something to help us get that momentum faster then just running around, so the Spin dash needed a bit more Omph.
    There were a lot of instances where I was getting stuck "ON" the wall and lost all of my momentum, so had to get further away from the wall while being close enough so I hit the ground with the momentum I've built up.
    To put it simply, it was hard.
    The rings where spaced out weirdly.
    like at some places you find a lot, and I mean A LOT.
    while at other places you couldn't find any.
    The "Mach Dash" was a good idea in concept but I feel like it was implemented poorly.
    It just felt like a worse version of the boost, where you had less control on when you want to go fast.
    Overall the game is fantastic and I definitely enjoyed every minute of it, but overall the game could have been better in some sections
    tl;dr
    The physics felt float-y.
    The beginning and the end of the level are my only complaints about the level.
    The ramps where you had to build up momentum felt at some places unnecessary.
    The Spin dash could use a bit of more Omph.
    There were a lot of instances where i got stuck "ON" the wall and it stopped my momentum.
    The rings where spaced out weirdly.
    The "Mach Dash" Was a good idea, but it felt like a worse version of the boost.
    The game is fantastic and i definitely enjoyed it, but it could have been better

      I largely aggree, to add to the critisism, the ending of the level should be more of a climax. If you examine how levels in the original Super Mario Bros end, the player guides mario to get the biggest height on the flagpole for maximum amount of points. The ending of each level was a mini challenge set by the devs. If you can somehow make finishing a level more exciting and a challenge for a higher score, that would be cool.
      Overall enjoyed it thoroughly, fell out of the world once.

    • @spindash64
      @spindash64 7 років тому

      To be fair, Sa1 physics were also floaty. I'd assume it's to help make platforming easier with such a fast character, since it's a lot harder in 3D. They tightened it up a lot in Sa2 once they got a handle on controlling it, so the same could apply here

    THIS.... THIS!!! This is precisely how a 3D Sonic game should look and feel when traversing the environment! I feel like Sonic Adventure was the closest Sega ever got to realizing this but could not achieve it at the time due to hardware limitations. This is the kind of thing I've always imagined for the franchise, and it looks like you've nailed it. Boy oh boy I hope Sega takes notice of this... and not just in a sour grumpy takedown way a la Nintendo :(

    I keep coming back to watch the trailer over and over again. It just brings me to tears to see that we have a new unique formula that takes past ideas and modified them. i really hope Sega acknowledges this person/teams work and hire them to work on the next sonic game like they did with Christian Whitehead and head cannon with sonic mania. if they do some day hire you i hope it will have it's own series of this gameplay style kinda like the sonic adventure series. this is a fully 3D sonic game and not that 3D/2D speed running, boost to win bullshit that people like to call a real 3D sonic experience , this game play style is what sonic really needs for his 3D career. Well that's what i think, i just really hope Sega and sonic team will take notes from this fan game or better yet hire the person or people responsible for making this fantastic fan game.

    I've always wanted a Sonic game with free-form exploration and wide open areas, as Sonic seemed like the perfect franchise for that type of gameplay. I'm glad you've provided this for me! I look very much forward to any updates you make on this project.
    Though, as a minor request: do you think you could add an invert Y-axis camera in the options menu? I grew up on fifth- and early sixth-gen FPSes, which used the Down=Up control scheme, and having it switched up on me while I'm playing this feels unnatural to me.

    phenomenal job supersonic68, this blew my mind, this is how a 3D sonic game should be made. please, i really hope you just ignore the negative comments and the ridiculous complaints. your right speed should be earned not given. that what made the classics sale a lot better than the recent games.The massive open world level compliments the game, in the classics you had to explore and remember the level design too find hidden goodies which is the same case here. I am personally glad you made the level huge. Memorization played a important role in the classics. Sonic games are suppose to have replay value unlike Mario. Sorry i don't mean too tell you all this supersonic68 because you already fully understand what makes a sonic game a sonic game. you combine the classic, the SA series and the boost to win game play to were you have too EARN SPEED, i hope you don't change a thing. this is a perfect "sonic 3D fangame" but too me it's a perfect game.

    So I've downloaded the demo and have been giving it a quick run-thru. Very impressive! I really think you're on to something with the mach speed mechanic and rolling/unrolling at the right time. I fully admit, when I successfully pulled it off and barreled through a wall into a tunnel, I had a big smile on my face.
    That said, I do have some niggles that, once addressed, could make this dang near perfect in my eyes. They are as follows:
    -The badniks are a bit too small. Increasing their size would make them easier to roll into or maybe even jump on without using the homing attack.
    -I get what you're going for with the whole "earning speed" thing, but I still feel the spindash is underpowered. In the Genesis games, it could reliably be used to overcome loops, whereas I can't quite say the same for it here.
    -Sonic's turning might be a bit too twitchy in mach mode.
    -Maybe the drift and quickstep from the boost formula could be implemented...?
    Anyways, I have to go to work, so that's all I got for now. Best of luck to you, and keep up the good work!

    You did a fantastic job with this game! I was playing for a good 3 hours yesterday and I still feel like there's more to do! I think what made it so good was the fact that you can back track and try certain obstackles again. Is there a forum or some place to report bugs? I found a couple spots where I fell through the world. Also just a small critique, I would suggest making turning and adjusting direction while in mach speed less sensitive. Making sharp right or left angle turns while at such high speeds can be quite disorienting. I did get used to it after a bit but I could see that frustrating many other players. Once again this was a fantastic and I very much look forward to any additional levels you will be making.

(maybe there could even be a momentum gauge for Mach State?) OK, I've got to be honest here... Why aren't you guys part of Sonic Team?
