  • Ghanim Al Shnen was working on a building site in November 2018 in Sydney, Australia, when a metal bar he was holding struck overhead wires. He suffered catastrophic injuries that resulted in the amputation of both his arms.
Now, in a world-first procedure, he is being fitted with two robotic arms that he will control with his mind.
Overseeing this complex process is renowned orthapaedic surgeon Dr Munjed al Muderis. The two men have much in common. Both fled Iraq in fear of their lives, arriving in Australia by boat. Both spent time in detention centres where they used the time to educate themselves.
Australian Story filmed with Ghanim over six months, following this medical miracle as it unfolded.

How cruel of australia to send his family away from him. His mental health took an obvious battering as well as his poor kids needing their daddy. his family pose no threat to australia whatsoever. I pray that someone in authority there sees the benefit to them all and ensures that this loving family is reunited in australia permanently

With an attitude like his, Australia would be lucky to have him. I hope he continues to improve, that immigration see sense and let him stay, and that his family is able to join him ASAP.

"I lost my hands, to see my family" I'm not religious but I like to think that we're all connected and that collective thought has real world impact. We should all pray for this great mans health.

Too bad the FACTS don't nearly read as sweet and cozy as the false praise he clammers for! Read up on his patients and the massive infections he is causing with his highly unethical surgeries lady! You'll be singing a different tune about this creepy surgeon!

The first time I have heard a Doctor or anyone for that matter be realistic and say “you can’t even wipe your own bottom”. Good on her.

Wait!.... Is this the amazing surgeon who helped the courageous farmer who got caught under farm machinery and lost both legs?!! He's awesome. Thank you for training and learning and being here in Australia to help us!
It's so easy to lump refugees into a 'scab' category....this should help Aussies understand there are extenuating circumstances for everyone.

So the scaffolders on the job that built the perimeter scaffold didnt get electrocuted building around the powerlines but the guy working within the perimeter scaffold got zapped. I'm sure common sense comes into play here. I'm assuming the guy was not looking where he was swinging these vertical droppers before putting them into the block work.

You do know what can happen when you "assume" right ? ( it can make an ASS outta U & ME 🧐 ) BUT maybe your assumptions are right. Maybe it was his own fault. OR Maybe his employers didn't give him proper instructions on the job. Maybe they thought they did or Maybe they "assumed " he understood their instructions ( even though they knew he was a foreigner with very limited english.) Maybe they didn't give a shit 🤒. And Maybe that building company was in the habit of employing cheap labour ( refugees are easy targets for exploitation especially in the building industry ) Who knows 🙄 not you and not me !.Only the workplace investigation will hopefully bring out the truth. But I'd be very interested to know how much carpentry training he was given on or off the job before he was employed by that company especially since his background was in law enforcement not carpentry ! 🙄
