- Having explored the southern portion of the Shetland Isles, it's now time to head north and ride the central, hilly region, travelling through the tiny settlements of Veensgarth, Walls and Sandness.

A new road is being built on Shetland primarily to support the construction and maintenance of the Viking Wind Farm, which requires heavy machinery and large components to be transported to the site; this new road will also facilitate the delivery of equipment for the Shetland HVDC link project, connecting the islands to the mainland electricity grid for the first time, and will eventually be used by the public as a safer and more efficient road after construction is complete.
You need to take more pictures! You have such a great eye for things!
Kevin, it is so great riding along with you. The perfect level of adventure for my old bones. Thanks for another fine episode. Cheers.
Thanks for the adventure Kevin! Warm regards from Robbie and Beth in Mississippi USA
Hello Robbie and Beth and many thanks indeed for your fine contribution. It's most appreciated. Fabulous to hear you enjoy and appreciate the videos.
CHG:
The Motorcycle Road Trips - Scottish Islands will go down in history as a youtube epic, along the lines of Lawrence of Arabia and Ben Hur. As long-time viewers from the beginning of Travels By Narrowboat, we love both worlds and have never missed an episode. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
Joe & Janice
Maryland, USA
Thank you so much Joe. It is my wish that the road trip and travels by narrowboat will become a long time favourite, a classic almost.
At 4:49there is classic motorcycle display on the right
I'd heard something at the time about an elderly gentleman that opens his private collection to visitors, if he likes them. Is that the place?
I am enjoying your motorcycle tour. I look forward to more motorcycle adventures.
I love seeing different countries like this, back roads, little villages, architecture, just perfect✌️
Hi Kevin great video really enjoyed it, loving your Scottish video's mate.
❤ Take care X X X
It's great to hear that Susan, thank you for watching.
What an amazing journey throught the islands of Scotland. Love the diversity.. Thanks so much for sharing.
Happy Birthday Kevin from Robbie and Beth in Mississippi USA!! We’re enjoying your motorbike travels. Keep warm and stay safe. ❤️
Thanks Kevin, this was a belter and I think that I'd like a GS now myself but yes thanks for taking us along with you on this fantastic solo motorbike adventure. Take care and all the best. Stevie
There's no better workhorse that a GS Steve. 😁
Hi Kevin thanks again for sharing your life experiences with people .
From your first ever video you have produced very interesting and informative video's.?
Your road trip videos have brought back to me so many fond memories.. Of my past riding my motorcycle across this country and others..
I was lucky enough to be borne and brought up on the canals. And able to obtain a motorcycle licence
I was once asked why I had a motorcycle on the bow of my narrow boat.??
To be honest it was one of the dumbest things I was ever asked I don't think he liked the reply I don't have to walk miles to retrieve a car or van after moving this boat ??
Unlike yourself.?
Unfortunately there is a certain element that are hell bent on removing these freedoms. From the people.?
So Kevin enjoy these freedoms as long as you can...
If ever you get the chance take a motorcycle trip along route 66. There is nothing like this so much to see and do along the way.?
Anyway Kevin as always keep yourself safe and well mate.
You're quite eight Wayne. I always try to make now the most important time.
Thanks for another great ride along Kevin ! Enjoying the motorcycle trip . Scenery I otherwise may never see !!! 😁
You're very welcome, Ralph. Thank you
Another wonderful trip through this wonderful island!
Many thanks. Pleased to hear that.
Brilliant editing. Especially appreciated the explanation about perceived speed. Still loving the series!
Great video Kevin, how I would love to be living up there right now! 😊
Very nice keep up the good work Kevin and take care keep well
...
Nothing better than a nice hot cup o' Joe, and bag of crisps after visiting a Shetland twaaa.....never mind.😊 I must say , even on a dark and cloudy day the vistas are spectacular! Thoroughly enjoyed the latest installment, Kevin! Thank you!
This, I think, is my favorite day in the saddle with Kevin. The road, the space, the hills. Very satisfying. Thanks, Kevin.
You're welcome Glenn, cheers.
So cool to get a really good look at the source of the sheep, sheepdogs, sweaters, and ponies. Thank you for sharing these beautiful adventures!
Very happy to hear you're enjoying the series, Ann. Thank you.
Thank you, Kevin for another interesting episode! Well done!

Thankyou again for a nother great video. Have had a thought about the bridge of walls,it could be named that after the place walls. Take care look forward to the next one. Thankyou.
Thank you, sir. Another enjoyable half hour for me looking at places I’ll never get to see and enjoying every bit of it. Also enjoyable are your comments and observations. Especially liked your comment about not being tied too much to a time schedule.
Thank you Art. 🙂
return of more typical Scottish weather, backlights the compelling, rugged landscapes
Hi Kevin, Thoroughly enjoyed the ride with you today. Brought back memories. Kevin and I both took turns having our photo taken at the Twatt sign and did as you did, took a drive down into the settlement. My great grandparents farmed in that area. They immigrated to New Zealand in the late 1800s. We too stopped at the derelict building which at that time was covered in colourful murals. Made a good photograph. There were other of my ancestors who lived and farmed in the area too, possibly at Walls. I was so looking forward to Sandness, when you stopped! Now I’ve got to wait another week! Ah well, something to look forward to.
It's fascinating how such sparsely populated areas can have such a rich history, and with descendants scattered all over the globe.
You probably need to stay on the canal, or maybe try rivers, and get a riverboat.
Aslan is also designed to travel rivers.
Lovely video, Gets us away from it all, Thank you Kevin and Happy Birthday.
Dave and Elaine ❤
Kevin I really enjoyed the magic carpet ride, smooth and super spacious, cheers looking forward to the next town. Drive safe, Charlie from Pennsylvania 😊
Beautiful trip thru Scotland . Thank You Kevin . Happy Birthday ! Have a wonderful day .
I hear the center section portion area region is a hidden gem and is lovely this time of year.
Edit: you said "right turn" and I actually had time to think how surprised I was you didn't say "Clyde".... Then you said it! Whooooa
sheep rocks and water, I'm not sure which is most abundant. Pleasant journey Kevin
Such a pretty landscape, while I look forward to seeing you on the boat, I have very much enjoyed the ride through Scotland. Please be kind about building houses, every person needs housing, and Great Britain, like many parts of the world, have a chronic housing shortage, especially affordable homes, those tacky cookie cutter houses are desperately needed by many of your fellow citizens.
Beautiful scenery…. Thanks for sharing!
I bought a motorcycle about 8 months ago and I have really enjoyed this series, good job.
Thank you. Happy riding
I really appreciate these videos, and thank you for the map too, that helps!
So you did know this one ,I did wonder .Ive been waiting patiently to see if you did another selfie 😊
Happy upcoming Birthday, Kevin!
Greetings from the States. I have watched all your travels for years now and I intend to continue as long as you do.😄 I feel like I have a bit invested in your work and should keep up, don't ya know?
Take care, I wish the best for you and Aslan, enjoy your birthday and keep chugging along. I'll be rooting for you!
Rodney
Many thanks Rodney. Yes, 32 again.
Excellent content, as always. I love the spirit to explore, and share. Please keep it up!
Thank you Andrew, I will
great vlog on travels
Thank you so much for watching all these years Lee.
The road sign name is Tveit. As a little lad in the 50s, one of our playgrounds was a farm named Tveita or Tveten, east in Olso. At that time a farm with many activities interesting boys and girls. Today one of many municipalities in Oslo. Many surnames here ending with -tveit or -tvedt, same meaning.
I was wondering if there was a proper pronunciation that didn't sound so rude.
@@CountryHouseGent It is very interesting to se the old norse names still in use, even if rewritten due to different pronounciation today. But the basic meaning is still there, and we are using the same names on many places here today as; Hoswick = Husvik (houseinlet), Sandwick = Sandvik (sandinlet), Tw*tt= Tveit (place, stead). You are travelling in vinland, no not wine, but grasland. We see only grasland and no crops here. To harsh conditions for wheat, rye etc but excelent for sheep. The old norse names was Hjaltland(Shetland), Orkneyar (Orkneys), Suðreyjar (Hebrides). Your dream for a fishing boat is very understandable when looking at these beautiful places.
Another supeerb episode. A bit sad that this series is approaching the end, but looking forward to the next adventure.Impressed that Thomas William has put in a second appearance 😁
😆 Very true John, I thought there was only one before planning this trip. Imagine my surprise and delight. 😁
Hey! Hey! Hey! You know what day it is! Another Friday adventure drop. Seems weather has turned a bit but at least not raining too much. I can imagine just sitting on a hill and listening to the quiet. Thanks for the ride! Stay safe out there and Cheers from Seattle! ☺
Yes it was looking a bit gloomy that day, Ann. Fortunately things brighten up towards the end. 🙂
A lot of miles there Kevin! Surprised it isn't colder.
Indeed Dave, it seemed to get milder the further north I travelled.
Very interesting and entertaining as always Kevin. Cheers Buddy.
Appreciate that Marty, cheers
Another great vlog Kevin, a trip to Twott & Sadness 😅 found it really funny, on your way back south you could stop off at Bury in Lancashire to get the best & most famous black pudding....of them all?
That's a thought. Don't think I've every been to Bury.
Awesome as usual brother!
Grand has always tc now the oldies 👍🤗
Kevin, a good vlog
Keep your dirtyside down.👍
You have done the holiday my mum dad and aunt did 25 years ago in a camper van my mum said it was the most beautiful holiday
Awesome to hear that Lorraine. I hope it rekindled many fond memories of their time on the islands. Cheers 🙂
The abandoned manor looks like it could have been a good setting for a Sherlock Holmes story, or a horror story.
It definitely has a hint of Hammer House Of Horrors about it, Ann. 😳
It’s like Shetland time is canal time’s chill cousin-both in no rush and simply enjoying the ride!😎 Cheers.
There is that parallel between the two Mark. A great feeling of quietness and lack of pace.
Driving to the Grand Canyon I found a guy walking away from an rolled car in some boulders. He wasn't hurt, but looked really shook up. We stopped and gave him a ride to a cafe we had just passed. He said something about his wife and kids being in the car and I had a minor heart attack until he explained that they had already walked to the cafe.
A half hour later I'm driving in the park, look in my rearview mirror and see a large pine tree blow over and break the windshield of a tour van behind me. No one was hurt.
Alas these Friday highlights must be coming to an end😢. Really enjoying them
Still a few more to go. There's the north of Shetland yet.
Yeah that construction intrigued me - I assumed it was for the (Viking) windfarm and also a section 106 thang to improve the road, but it's also the end of the new Shetland to Caithness electricity cable (Kergord HVDC Converter Station). I guess the track was for the heavy transformers.
I wonder how they generated energy when they were isolated and before wind turbines became popular 🤔
Cluster Twat 😁
That's a good question
I'm convinced a recent popular medical intervention has altered persons who participated in their abilities regarding speed distance and even width!!!
What? 😂
A new CHG episode! Always a Friday highlight❤️
Cheers for watching Danny.
@ Always a pleasure Kevin. By the way, quick question…..On your road trip did you imbibe any Alcohol?
I may have done on the last day, but my memory isn't what it was so I'll have to wait till I do the last episode to find out. :D
@ It was an observation that I made the other night. Early mornings - of which you have had plenty on this journey - are much easier to stomach without any Alcohol.
Hi Kevin 😀 thank you for all your brilliant videos 😀ive always wanted to ask you a question if I may 😀 what is the story behind you being called country house gent? I never thought this series would last this long 😊 absolutely brilliant 😀 thank you Kevin 😊
Hi Stephen. No worries. I used to live in a house in the country (Lake District) and I saw myself as a bit of a gent, and that's where the earliest days of the channel come from. 🙂
There seems to be a lot of Norwegian flags on Shetland and I don't think I have seen one Sottish flag??? Another great video from you. Thanks.
Yes a very noticeable Nordic influence throughout Shetland.
‘Aberdeen Angus’ crisps hey! Taylor’s also do ‘Haggis & Cracked Black Pepper’ flavour too ( I googled it). I see from your FB post that you are freezing your rocks off on Aslan…. I predict you’ll be back in bricks and mortar by the age of 65! Or a ‘Goldilocks’ boater ( I believe that’s the correct term) at the very least. 🤭
Two "T's", better than one! 😁
What great roads !! Are there no pot-holes? Better roads than main land England !!!
Great series. Really enjoying this. When are you back on Aslan?
I saw very few potholes, which of course were instantly noticeable the moment I crossed back into England.
@@CountryHouseGenthere in Chicago, thanks to the trucks, cold, salt etc our roads are made of potholes, lol.
Seems like there are no wild animals around. Or few domestic ones. 🦄🦆
Are you sure no one was injured inside that rolled vehicle?
Yes it was a previous crash.
So I have to ask. Since Shetland seems to be the place with the best blood sausage, will you be taking some with you when you leave, or is it too perishable to last? Just wondering. I have had blood sausage just one time, when I had a full Scottish breakfast in Glasgow. I found it tasty, but dry. Anyway, cheers. Shetland is quite interesting.
Yes it does keep quite well if stored in a cool dark place, like a motorcycle pannier. 🙂
Some silly souls say sadness in Sandness should seem similarly solemn and singularly so so sad! Say that ten times!
Now that's a tongue twister. I tried but failed miserably half way through. 🙂
Did you see if there was someone in that Car that was over turned ?
There was police tape visible by the car so it had obviously happened a while before Kevin found it 😊
Took me a moment to get the “twin town” reference.
G earth doesn’t bother to edit it.
Been a while since I visited a pair of Tw🕳️tts.
Gasp 🤭
Plenty of room up there for Starmers 'GREEN' energy farms. Not sure there is much up there to tickkle the fancy. To the left green/gey,,,and to the right, grey/green. Wonder what they do up there for 'kicks'? Wonder what the divorce rate is? PS: I assume you checked the upturned wreck for - stiffs?
Apparently it has been there for weeks.
Maybe it was bacon you were smelling. Maybe the good people on Shetland know the truism that bacon improves all food. What do you add to bacon to improve it? More bacon.
And brown sauce 😁
Looks like homes will go there . For all the English people that cannot get homes . As we are over run with the worlds cast offs .
No homes, access roads for the big maintenance vehicles apparently.
oh my your hair is grey how did that happen,,
Been like that for a few years now. It's called 'age' 😁 Looks quite distinguished.
Just curious : did it look like a recent car accident and wondering if someone was still trapped in that car ? Safe travels. I enjoy your videos.
The car was there for a few weeks before it eventually was removed!
Did you check to see if they was anyone in that overturned car, it could have happened 5 mins before you arrived 🤷♀🙂
Looked like he was close enough to see inside. It also looked like there was something around it, like police tape maybe?
Obviously new military base ?
kind of rude to drive over the grass by peoples tents
I had the OK of the site owner and I was nowhere near the tents.
