Got the etymology of picknick all wrong.
First of it would be 'picknig', secondly picknick is from the french 'piquer' - plucking, and 'nique' - something tiny. It's just french for finger food.
I had to look it up after BL said it. Found the same thing you said, although there were articles that said it was a common misconception etc. that it came from what BL said.
