Watched Fiddler on the Roof with my 10-year-old daughter. She was enthralled, and I was delighted to see it. Through great art, a girl in Texas was mesmerized by a story about Russian Jews over a 100 years ago. RIP, Chaim Topol.
Fiddler on the roof one of my favourite movies of all time RIP.
I saw a documentary about fiddler (musical & film) and completely changed my view of it, I have never seen on stage but seen the film numerous times
Anyway this docu really made me appreciate each song in its entirety and context.
It also showed rabbis from different parts of the globe either singing tevye songs and then talking heads explanation of each function within the Jewish people and wider community.
Norman jewison (to me) directed two classic musicals- Fiddler and jesus Christ superstar. Both deeply thoughtful and memorable
It's one of the very few films that come on late at night just before you go to bed.
You start watching it and end up being embroiled in a wonderful story with a fantastic leading man.
Before you know it you have watched the whole film and you know that you are going to be either late for work or very tired when you start work.
But it doesn't matter.
Even though you have the film on video or dvd , you still sit up and watch it to the end.
It still doesn't matter because you have again watched a masterful performance in a screen classic.
It doesn't matter that you are tired because you have been enriched again.
RIP Topol.
I'm going to dig out my copy again tonight and watch it into the early hours.
Why ?
Because it doesn't matter.
@@andyd2528 music and certain actors (certain actors who aren't singers as well) stay on your radar permanently. Mandy Patinkin, Harrison ford, John hurt and Wayne.
Just finished again and shed tears again. 58 year old man with two daughters.
No other Tevye even came close to equaling Topal!
True, But Zero Mostel ran a close second
I saw Herschel Bernardi perform the role of Tevye the Milkman on Broadway. Topol and Bernardi excelled in their own ways. The silver screen allowed Topol to play the role with the option of multiple takes and the limitless scenery and on location sets. Whereas on the stage; it is a one take limited to the sets and props available. Zero Mostel could not sing nor could he carry the pitch of the songs of the character. RIP Topol.
What a beautiful tribute to a glorious actor! Topol was one of my favorite performers, blessed with a fantastic voice, tremendous humor and talent. There are not enough star performers with his compassion directed towards children with life threatening illnesses and disabilities. He will be missed in many ways.
Yes he was so proud if the center for sick children in Israel that he helped raise so much funds for and enjoyed visiting them and seeing their progress.
What a beloved actor and performer I was sad when he passed away
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
He was a superb actor and had such presence that he stole every scene he was in. He radiated warmth and kindness. Rest in peace dear Chaim. ❤
I loved his role as Archaeologist Seaquest DSV 💔💔 plus Columbo For Your Eyes only too
I worked for United Artists who in 1971, released Fiddler On The Roof and had the pleasure of meeting Topol when he visited our local city. Having just seen the film at a company I review, and saw him as a rather big guy with a beard singing If I Were A Richman, I was a bit surprised when meeting him at the airport to see a rather young looking, clean shaved guy in jeans and teeshirt!
Wow its great to hear from someone who worked in the film industry and have met this gentleman.
Hope you get kept some 007 posters and movie memorabilia when at U.A!
Thank you for your comment
My all-time favourite movie too! And for me Topol is the only Tevye!
It's my all-time favourite movie too! And for me, Topol is the only Tevye!
I loved Fiddler on the Roof. Topol, was so alive with his sense of humour , compassion , and his talent . Rest in peace Chaim.
Chaim Topol holds a very special place in my heart because Fiddler on the Roof is one of my favorite musicals. In the years when I was doing community theatre, I was in at least three productions of FOTR . The last time, I was honored to be chosen to play Tevye's wife, Golde. But whether in the chorus or as Golde, the spiritual side of the story is what speaks to me. It's got humor so it's not too maudlin, but it also doesn't sugarcoat the troubles of the time.
Topol/Tevye RIP 🙏🏼🕯🥀
Very unique gentleman. He was an incredible father in the Fiddler.
He was. Despite his daughters' breaking tradition, he adored them. You could see how turning his back on Chava shattered him, and I think he would have relented even if they hadn't had to leave.
I will never forget when my beloved father took us to the movies to see Fiddler on the Roof. Dad loved his performance and the musical became one of our favorites. Thank you for the music, Topol🧡 You'll live in our hearts forever🧡🙏
Rest In Peace to a great actor
He was excellent in Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Very moving performances. May his memory be as a blessing.
Only by chance did I get to know such tragic news, and just because I was looking for "Fiddler on the Roof". Such news are normally spread all over the place, but not for Chaim Topol, at least not over the venues I usually visit, and this is shameful to say the least. He was born just 11 days earlier than my own mother, but in the same year, 1935. I will miss that great man and the accomplished actor he was, with his unique appearance and commanding voice. May he enjoy the splendors of the new realm in which I am sure he is dwelling right now, made of many splendors and magnificent surprises, especially for those like him, with such a creative mind. Sail safely, Chaim Topol, may your new journey be a happy and interesting one... L'Chaim, to life!
Sorry you had to find out that way .
I was annoyed he didnt get a mention during this years Oscars
@@Moochtv How could they not pay tribute or mention Chaim Topol z”l?! That’s absolutely ridiculous.
I know! If they insist we see a full list of those who passed on their website, stick the nobody's on there and put the known ones of the telecast!
They might have added something to Hollywood's History, but public wise, who cares about a cameraman who died at 89 years old or a screenwriter we've never heard of?
And you wonder why the Academy are losing so many views every year!
I loved Chaim Topol and was shocked that there was nothing about his death even though I believe it was the same day that the death of Robert Blake was all over the news. This is the same thing that happened when Shirley Temple Black happened. When she was a little girl, she carried the American public through the Depression with her talent and sweetness, but her death was hardly mentioned. She was one of the children abused by the studio system, and I believe that her parents got all of her money. She said before she died that when she and the little child actors "misbehaved", they were placed in a windowless room and made to sit on ice. If that wasn't child abuse, I don't know what is. Topol was the definitive Tevye. And Fiddler on the Roof means more to me now than it did when it first came out. There is a documentary about the making of the movie which everyone should see. I didn't know that Norman Jewison wasn't even Jewish, but he perfectly captured the time period when the Czar forced the Jewish people out.
@@joanschilleci7564 "Fiddler", despite being a musical, was inspired by a true and tragic story behind it, and as so many tragic stories go, especially of forced migrant families, usually scattered to the four winds and split apart due to the arrogance and prejudice of some people and stupid/arrogant/ignorant policies, it always leaves you bitter and speechless on how the human condition is to this very day.
Let's forget about race, religion or color of skin. Whomever experienced such tragic events, my family included, who were anti-Nazis, but not of Jewish extraction, and therefore had to seek a home elsewhere, abandoning everything familiar and that they held dear, unless they wanted to suffer the same fate of many dissidents in Germany at that time, knows what ripping a family apart is all about.
I find "Fiddler" one of the most important movies and testimonials made about that tragic Russian period, but not just referred to that particular age alone. It reminds us always on how many in history must have suffered the very same injustices due to prejudice and racism, clearly stemming from utter ignorance and lack of proper education. One can dig deep throughout history to find that at every step of human evolution there was such an infamy practiced, but because human memory is short they get minimized by now, and this is where the true tragedy lies.
This is why "Fiddler" is so very important to some of us, and I would also add another splendid and tragic movie, made by the French director Henri Verneuil, starring Anthony Quinn and Virna Lisi, called "The 25th Hour", which once again depicts yet another tragic event out of many such examples in our recent history.
I hope that in time people at large will finally realize that we live on the very same globe called Earth, and that we must all hold together and help each other, instead of always seeking yet another excuse to annihilating each other.
Animals usually learn from their mistakes, why can't mankind do the same?
Thank you for such a beautiful tribute to Mr Topol, he was one of a kind.
I loved him! I am grateful and thankful I was able to see him on stage in Birmingham England in Fiddler on the Roof - he was wonderful. May you rest in peace and sending love to his family.
This movie came to Tehran in the early 70s and got dubbed in farsi. Encouraged by my mom who used to sing while washing dishes, I memorized most of the songs of The Fiddler on the Roof.
RIP Topol saw Flash Gordon first and thought it was great that Zarkof wasn't just played for laughs
I'm FG there a very funny but deeply tasteless joke about Hitler.
As zharkov is being brainwashed.
I feel sure that if Gordon made today a actor of Topols stature wouldn't allow it or the studio interference would cut it
I had the honor of playing Golde in our High School musical. We had a Tevya exactly like Topol. So perfect. Fiddler happened to come to our city with Topol as Tevya. Of course our cast had to go. I'll never forget. After the play, reporters swarmed his dressing room and he said, "I just entertained my audience and now I must entertain you? No! Get out! Just like Chava. If he bent that far he would break. I never could have truly understood Fiddler without him. My God how I loved that man!
I was blessed to get to see this good, talented man playing Tevye at a production of Fiddler on the Roof at the Pantages Theater some time ago. It was advertised as his last performance of this role ever. He was even better live than he was in the film (and I LOVE him in the film!). RIP!
My wife and I saw Topol in Chicago (2009), as he reprised his role as Tevye during his "Farewell Tour"...wonderful, heartbreaking performance which I'll never forget. To see so many families in the audience that night was also a tribute to this great man and FOTR!
That sounds like an awesome memory.
Thank you for the comment.
Great tribute for a great man.
Thank you.
It's hard to find the words to honor someone this talented. Thank you for all the wonderful years of Tevye. You brought so much joy to my life.
One of my Mothers very favorite movies, music and actors .
Chaim Topol , many thanks for many fine memories .Shalom.
I had the great fortune to see him perform "Fiddler" live. Rest in Peace, Topol.
Thank you for such a deeply moving & beautiful tribute. Chaim was one of my favorite actors. He had such a passionate soul and it came through in his performances. I will miss him greatly. 🕊️💐✌🏻
One good reason for not wanting to live forever. Seeing those that brought a bright spot to your life fade away.😥
But it's the second death we have to watch out for Isiah says. We will all have a chance to see each other again during 1000 year judgement day. It's very possible many of us will live forever. Death is the enemy Adam brought and Jesus conquered when we r called back you will make your own choice to live forever or die
Yikes! "A thousand year judgement day" sounds like a trip to the DMV.😜
Nice tribute. Besides being a great actor, singer and dancer he was a true gentleman. A family man. Charitable and a great defender and supporter of Israel his mother country. We need his type now more than ever. Shalom Mr Topol rest in peace in the Holy Land until the coming of the Messiah.
Thanks and cheers for that great comment.
He was the most wonderful actor....Fiddler on the Roof will never be the same. He was fantastic!!!
Rest in Peace Mr. Chaim Tevye. There will never be another Tevye with that big deep raspy beautiful voice, like you! You were created for this role and wonderful & lovable character. One of a kind!
I always preferred topol and appreciated his craft and work especially in fiddler. There is no other tevye. He plays it so authentically. Like no other actor could do. As someone with Israeli heritage from my grandma and great grandma, I always loved his passion for the role. He understood the language, the tradition s, the world, the whole essence of the character. In a way I think no other actor could achieve. Because that is his culture. That is his heritage. Fiddler is one of my most favorite films and my husband and I watch it often. We quote it often. I also translate for him some of the Hebrew and Yiddish in the film that I actually understand. I don't know much. Just what I remember My great grandma and grandma teaching me here and there. I often heard them, especially My great grandma speaking it a lot. So I picked it up a little. My husband actually got to see Topol live in fiddler. I never got that chance and to this day am still jealous.
Now that's a comment!
It's nice to hear from so many how this chap and his craft affected them.
Always good when you can qoate a movie with your partner who gets it.
Thanks for story.
I loved him in that. You’re right, no one else is as good.
“Tell me more about this man Houdini?”
What a phenomenal actor. Needless to say I was a huge fan of his performances in Flash Gordon and FYEO but of course his range and body of work was so much more. Sad to hear of his passing but what a life he lived.
Like Yul Brenner in the king and I, Topol will forever be the gold standard by which performances of Tevye are judged. RIP and shalom.
They couldnt even make a movie like fiddler on the roof now days. And they couldnt find another topol either. What a great movie and actor.
Farewell legendary Fiddler... you filled our hearts with joy and now with deep sorrow... :-(
Wherever you are, I really hope you get a staircase going up, one going down and one leading nowhere, just for show. 🙏
I hope so too!!!
Chaim Topol was my favourit actor too. His performance in "Left Luggage" was wonderfull
In Oct I was in the hospital for 2 days .came across Fiddler on TV...I was in a room by myself and was singing along with the movie .once the nurses checked on me, they thought it was funny I knew all the words ( was in Fiddler in high school)
A wonderfull man who gave us so much through his sheer presence, his smile guides me everyday. RIP my friend.
A beautiful man in a beautiful show!
When I was a young girl, for a long time, I always thought that my Daddy was Teyve in Fiddler on the roof! My Dad and Topol in Fiddler looked almost alike! I'm talking Twins! My Dad even wore a hats like Teyve! !!
About 25 years ago we had the joy of seeing Chaim Topol perform in his final road tour of Fiddler. Thank you Chaim for presenting your craft with such grace and humility, you are now a rich man in our Lord's kingdom.
In 2007 Topol came to New Zealand in a revival of “Fiddler on the Roof” in which he was amazing.I went to three performances and
enjoyed meeting this charming man backstage and treasure a great photo I had taken with him.

I adored Fiddler and especially Tevya. RIP Topol. You were amazing. 💖
One of my favourite films from when I was a child , would sing along and dance to the music. Many happy hours, you will be sadly missed my friend, god bless and keep you safe. xxx
I saw him live in the Fiddler on the Roof at the London Palladium..he was excellent. When he came on stage the audience errupted with applause.
Truly gifted topol. Always seeming full of boundless energy. As to Fiddler, a remarkable musical document of schetyls and the pogroms in Russia.

My mother, RIP, watch Fiddler on the Roof more than a dozen times at the movie theater in the early 70's. I still have her 8-track tape from the songs of the movie ❤
Aw that's a nice memory of your mother. Very long film too but great to have a film that you could go see again and again at the cinema (my most repeated trip was to watch The Empire Strikes Back!).
I fell in love with the man watching fiddler
What a man! What a loss.
Got to see him as Tevye live on stage in Chicago. The man was outstanding! 🥰
It's great to hear from people who have seen him on stage.
Thanks for comment
Tpol was THE #1 Tevye. That voice! That delivery! Forty years later, I still know every song and consider this my favorite musical. May Topol Rest in Peace with HaShem.
Saw Topol strutting FOTR at the Paladium London in the 1990s. Thank you for the joy you gave. RIP

I love his works and my Family is huge Fan of His work. May Mr.Chaim Topol memory be blessed❤
Thanks though I had to chop it down a few times as UA-cam didn't like it at first!
(Still a bit frustrated as I had over lap some music again which muted Hans Zarkov staying they would try to leave one day, with a slight echo in his voice. I will probably upload a longer cut in my in memoriam channel at a later date).
Topaz was fabulous in Fiddler on the Roof, one of my very favorite musicals of all time! He was soooo charming.
Topol was the best!! The absolute best actor ever!!!
Bravo!
Espectacular actuación en el violinista en el tejado, el director y este actor son inmortales...Tradition!!!
My first introduction to Topol was Flash Gordon, I was just ten but his name stuck. Sad to have lost Zarkov and Ming over the past few years. Lovely tribute. R.I.P
Thank you for sharing.
I saw him perform in Fiddler on the Roof. Amazing.
I bet that was an experience
A wonderful tribute to a very beloved talented man. L'chaim!
Why thank you, erm L'mouse with cat profile!
A lot of folk have pointed out the lack of War and Rememberance , so I will eventually do an extended cut of this episode on my other channel dedicated to tributes.
I saw him perform live in Seattle. Amazing show of Fiddler.
Ita great hearing from people who saw him perform, from around the world
