Great memories for me, now living in Australia, moved from the New Forest in 1949 aged 8 and went to Bearsden Academy, Mrs. sewel, teacher then off to Milngavie by steam train from Westerton to The high school there, passing the arial transport dream which went bust. Lunchtime was yesterdays cakes , half price at the local cake shop , (my grandmother Jean Bowie, worked there years later,) and then playing near the mills on the river., picked on because of my southern accent , but still loved Scotland , have returned twice , thanks for the vid. regards Tony
I had to watch this to learn how to spell the village name... But ended up knowing it's history!! Looking forward for some more videos as am planning to go around Glasgow! Thank you:)
Milngavie was meant to be pronounced exactly as the spelling suggests. The original name for the village was Mulguy or Millguy depending on your literacy away back in the day. When the railway came to Millguy the village became desirable for professional people working in the city, convenient transport and a clean healthy environment. Business folks in Millguy felt a name change would help to get away from the mill town image and the worthies came up with Milngavie. Locals just kept calling the village Millguy. This was told to me by my grandfather who was born in Milngavie and would be about 130 years old if still alive.
Thanks, Ross. This was a great introduction to Milngavie. I have been there twice, but failed to see any of the items you pointed out in your video. Will need to visit again!
This is a lovely walk down memory lane! I'm a singer who grew up in Milngavie and come back to visit my parents when I can :) If you are ever looking for a musician in any of your work, lemme know!

AAA were never installed at gun sites. After operation Barbarossa, Luftwaffe had higher priorities.
Thanks for the info! Was going off the info at the site but had a few people tell me this now
Hmm aye, the latrine angle. But are the boulders at Bearsdens' Boclair Road Cemetery worth just one rob? Or were they placed by historians?
