Algonquin wolf is a species (Canis lycaon) formally known as the Easter wolf, when historically had a much bigger range, is now only restricted to around eastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec. There's a Hybrid population called the Great lake wolf (Canis sp) on the western side of the Grate lakes more in the United States, around Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, that's primarily Grey wolf (Canis lupus) x Algonquin wolf (Canis lycaon), likely some Prairie wolf (Canis latrans). The new threat to the remaining Algonquin wolf (Canis lycaon) is the Tweed wolf (Canis sp) aka the "Coywolf" that has the basic genetics of Grey wolf (Canis lupus), Algonquin wolf (Canis lycaon), Prairie wolf (Canis latrans), Domestic dog (Canis familiaris), very likely also some Red wolf (Canis Rufus).
Irene, SD area. I've seen with my own eyes a wolf that I called in but didn't have a shot at it, an another time 3 of these coy wolves basically circled myself, my grandma and our 2 dogs. Eventually they left.
100%. I’m in SW Florida. Englewood area. I remember seeing one in particular that I was positive was a wolf or a wolf hybrid. Coyotes don’t scare me. This thing freaked me out, staring from the woods.
As an avid hunter who grew up in plumas county california. I've harvested several coyote in the 45lb range. I can't say I've taken 50lb but believe I've seen them larger than thar. Usually at night when rifel hunting isn't allowed. The coyote population has dwindled as of the last few years I believe because of the wolves not only impacting pray for coyote but being pray for wolves.
Those mountains coyotes are further south than you might think. I've seen large coyotes (the size of Belgian malinois) as far south as the Cleveland national forest. Southern Riverside/ northern San Diego area
Here in Ontario we have huge Coyotes easily 60lbs. And this is in a major city like Toronto by the Ravines. My husky who is 90lbs has squared off against them consistently but always run away and try to bait him into a secluded area.
Mountain Coyotes get big like wolves. Cold weather, trees, deeer, sheep, goats to eat. Desert coyotes are small like foxes. Mice, rabbits, snakes, bugs.
Those coyotes outside and around yosemite are huge. They would get supper agro around spring time durring pupping season attacked 12 dogs one morning killing 3.
Here in Worcester, Massachusetts (second largest city in NE) the "coywolves" are about the size of a hearty German shepherd. They are all over the place.
Depends on the environment. Some environments favor larger coyotes. Here in Southern California, they’ve been tiny for decades. About 25lbs. They look for small pets in the suburbs. Or hunt in the canyons.
Some of the big ones in the Gulf Area (They shot one in Baldwin County Alabama that weighed 60 lb) could have a high percentage of Red Wolf DNA. More likely it's just natural selection at work. The ones I've seen in the big packs (counted 22 in one crossing the road) tend to be larger size than the ones in the smaller traditional packs. It's my belief that larger size leads to better success on deer and the large packs are deer specialist. It seems like a large pack of larger animals would be tough to support on their traditional game. The extirpation of the Red Wolf has left a niche open and they may be evolving to exploit it.
I caught a coyote in eastern Canada that would have registered as a large wolf at the auction!!! I still have the pelt its huge!! Hybrids I would say.Cheers
Seen a black panther in Northeast Arkansas from my tree stand; deer hunting along the Mississippi River... Yet Arkansas Game & Fish claim that there are none in the area... So glad it kept its distance, cause I was ready to put it down if I felt like it was coming to climb for me... Having been on the receiving end of a house cat's wrath... Not No, but HELL NO
No you didn't. Black panthers don't Exist Only big cats that can be black is a melanistc jaguars and leopards. No documentation of this pigment mutation in mountain lions aka panthers, cougars, puma, all difrent names for the same animal.
The first coyote I ever saw in the Rockies was in Yellowstone. I don’t know how much it weighed but it was big, I grew up in Alabama and our coyotes are pretty small.
I live in upstate New York and it’s so funny how coyotes out west seem so small while here they’re the size of medium-large dogs and especially where I live we have normal colors, black coyotes, and blonde coyotes
I saw a coyote in alley behind my brothers house in the city of Milwaukee. Im from Michigan so ive seen big ones, this city yote was huge!! No lack of food for them. Plenty of rabbits, cats and dumpsters!
I live in the Pacific Northwest (where coyotes are not native but followed the railroad from the prairies when it was being built over 100 years ago) I live in a city but often see coyotes as there is an industrial area and rail yard down the road they live in, just the other week saw one eating garbage in the parking lot of my apartment it was actually pretty large compared to what I’m used to seeing.
In the northeast we have large Eastern Coyotes. I wrote this for an Instagram post and figured I'd share it here: The Eastern Coyote is a relatively new species of the canine family. After the wolves and mountain lions were pushed out of the East by humans, there was no top predator (aside from humans) left in the forest. For nearly 300 years, CT has not had a wolf population and nearly 200 years has not had a lion population. Between the regrowth of forests from the old clear cut farmlands of CT and wildlife/habitat conservation efforts for deer, the environment became suitable for the canine species again. In the 1950's, CT began sighting coyotes and established a growing population. The coyotes would eventually mate with grey and eastern wolves to the north. This resulted in a larger, more wolf-like coyote that is easily distinguishable from a traditional western coyote. Since the interspecies breeding began, the coyotes assumed the top predator role in New England. Not only did the coyotes appearance change, but their behavior as well. Many eastern coyotes now hunt in small family based packs. They are easily able to overcome fawns, injured, and young deer. Even sometimes adult deer when hunting in a pack. The larger eastern coyotes became more successful than the smaller ones and the size of the eastern coyote has been growing ever since its arrival. Adult males average from 45-55 lbs while females average 35-40 lbs. The genetic makeup vastly fluctuates individually. Some Eastern Coyotes have much more wolf dna than others. A study has indicated an average genetic makeup of the eastern coyote is 26% wolf (13% grey 13% eastern), 10% dog, and 64% coyote. I'm fascinated by this species of canine and their uncanny ability to not only survive, but thrive nearly anywhere. However, this also means they must be managed in certain areas. Coyotes aren't ALL feeding on backyard pets and livestock, but once they identify them as a food source, they will almost always come back for more. I'm excited to see the transformation of the eastern coyote in decades to come.
You might surprised about cougars that are also making a come back. I do not know for CT, but do know now exist over many of the southern states. They get caught on trial cameras and local people in my region of northwest florida have seen and heard then at night.
Coyotes are overtaking the east coast Appalachian areas. I live in Harford county MD at the tip of Chesapeake Bay and coyotes are spotted more than ever before.
I hunt cotote in eastern Quebec and I rarely harvest coyotes under 40lbs, often in the fifties and my biggest one is a 62 pounders. I saw bigger on the hunting group.
I've never heard of a large coyote subspecies, but we have coywolves exactly this size and appearance all throughout the hudson valley region of NY. It's been literally years since I heard a coyote sound off start with their yips and yodles, it's a wolf like howl now that gets things going. Not all of them are really big though, there's clearly still intermixing going on which is increasing size.
Coyotes in past, Pleistocene era were actually larger than today. They evolved into the smaller version to not have to compete with grey wolves. Being smaller they could survive on smaller game such as rats, mice, hare and even insects and plants.

Penn State verified several years ago that Wolves are present in numbers in Pennsylvania. Coyotes returned, hybridized with dogs, and selection kept the larger Coyotes. Wolves appeared to be interbreeding with Coyotes as well and now actual Wolves have successfully migrated into Pennsylvania and established breeding populations, per a guy I drink with. He drinks alot.
My friend photographed a pack of these north of Truckee this winter. They were big with full coats, he was sure they were wolves. Snouts looked too thin.
I lived in the lower midwest and hunted coyotes and coydogs. The Coydogs were every bit as big as any domestic dog you have seen 40- 75 lbs, maybe larger. They were killing deer, cattle, sheep, fouls but not horsed. Horses and Donkeys slaughter them. Coydogs run and hunt with the true Coyotes. The estrous cycle of reproduction reduces odds of Coydogs dominating reproduction. Coyotes adapt to competition and prey. They fill the void left by the absence of wolves. I lived in California for 20 years. The Coyotes are generally the size of large fox, but in some cases appear to be 20-30lbs max.
The coyotes in north Carolina are hybrids. They average over 50 pounds, hunt in true packs to take down whitetail deer. At night you can hear them calling out here by the dozens not just one or 2 individuals.
The coywolves seem to be as well adapted to the urban/forest habitat as raccoons are nowadays...I've never seen them as a kid but lately I've been seeing ones so well fed you'd think they're someone's pet. I regularly see 50-60 pound ones in the suburbs.
I’m from NYC , recently moved to Washington State. I seen my first coyote while at work and thought to myself “that 💩 is alot bigger than I expected” like REALLY big… I thought it was a wolf at first till I saw the tail and realized it was a coyote. But seeing this video makes it make more sense to me lol
They are here in Baltimore Maryland also. Been seeing them for years . Just now getting local attention. Swear I been seeing them here since at least 2015. Def 40-50 pounds . Crazy .
I seen what i believe were lone wolves in Ontario. One in Tiny Beaches and one in Caledon. May have been a coywolf on hindsight but i cannot get over the weight/height/girth and composed movements of these two. The one in Tiny was at least 125 and the one in Caledon maybe a little lighter but imposing to see compared to a slender regular weight coyote
In my area of lower elevation Pacific Northwest the coyotes are normal size but often form huge packs, I know some people say they do not do that, sorry that is BS, they do. They stay out of higher elevations though because we have wolves up there.
We have coyotes here in new braunfels texas that are the size of german shepards i seen one thought it was a good boy then i realized that was no shepard that was a yote
I see one her it at least I think it was I live in the Bay Area California o wa driving in the mountains when I seen this one Wolfe or I thought it was because it was big I know coyotes I grew around then this one was big and by itself just staring at me
@Austinite333 in Danvers one came up on me and we both stopped and stared at each other for 5 minutes without moving. I wasn't scared but I was studying it because how big it was. Bigger and longer than a German shepherd. I've been around huge dogs my whole life and this thing looked 75 to 90 pounds. I'm 6'1 and it looked longer than me if it stood up. I mean I studied it for like 5 minutes straight in slow motion and then we both unlocked our eyes at the same time too and both went our separate ways. It was like we locked consciously and that's what made us both pause for so long. All the coyotes on the property here in Florida aren't as big. But they're always in huge packs. This thing was by itself up there and just walking across me majestically until we both paused to look at each other for a while. And this was in a super urban environment 3-4 feet from a busy highway and in a strip mall and hotel parking lot and there's nothing but strip malls and fast food on both sides of the highway for miles and miles and all the way to Boston. So it sees people. Which is why it didn't run away or why it was pausing to check me out. It was like meant to be for both if us lol.
Google: What is a mountain coyote? MOUNTAIN COYOTE. Canis latrans lestes5. Field characters. -General appearance that of a large collie dog (pl. 39a); head and body about 30 to 33 inches long, tail with hairs 12 to 15 inches; ears pointed, about 4-1/2 inches (114 mm.) I am in Florida: Not a big deal. I have seen some extra large coyotes in florida and these are called coydogs and coywolves. Some have dog and eastern canadian wolf genes in the same animal. There are coyotes living nearby to me, but I never see them up close. They likely are getting large to take up niches of the extinct wolves. It will make it easier for them to prey on adult armadillo if their heads get bigger with more powerful jaws.
Here in Ontario Canada majority of coyotes are a yote/wolf hybrid called Coywolf. They average 45-50lbs

I had a coy dog that was mixed w/ a big coyote species in Northern California. 60lbs
The coywolves seem to be as well adapted to the urban/forest habitat as raccoons are nowadays...I've never seen them as a kid but lately I've been seeing ones so well fed you'd think they're someone's pet. I regularly see 50-60 pound ones in the suburbs.
They have them in Chicago cook county forest preserves coy-wolfs !
Do Grizzlies belong back in CA? There was talk that that they were thinking about it. I think a line has to be drawn somewhere.
I’m from NYC , recently moved to Washington State. I seen my first coyote while at work and thought to myself “that 💩 is alot bigger than I expected” like REALLY big…
I thought it was a wolf at first till I saw the tail and realized it was a coyote. But seeing this video makes it make more sense to me lol
Some of them are massive!
high altitude, cold weather predators are always larger as they retain heat better.
I live in West Virginia where we don’t have wolves and I passed a MASSIVE coyote on the side of the road the other day.
They are here in Baltimore Maryland also. Been seeing them for years . Just now getting local attention. Swear I been seeing them here since at least 2015. Def 40-50 pounds . Crazy .
Got em in Florida too. Regularly found to be 50-80lb
They got coyote in San Francisco. I seen some that were size of a German shepherd..
I brought this up on a livestream a few months ago! Got denied about it on stream but i knew it!! Ive seen lots here in Canada
Saw a 50lb rabbit in the Eastern Sierra last year..like 3ft. Tall
Here in California they’ve been known to breed with house Dogo Agentino’s, German Shepherd’s and pit bulls!
I’m in central Florida and even here the coyotes are more like German shepherd dogs probably mixed or something with domestic dogs?
These arkansas coyotes are looking like husky now
Coydogs
I'm in the Socal mountains and they're pretty big this far south too
In northern Michigan coyotes and wolfs are breeding. There are called coywolf.
I wonder if they go into the valley at all because sometimes I see HUGE coyotes
i've seen one driving to Thomas Edison lake...they do exist and they get big!
A friend said he saw a pack of big coyotes at Griffen Park at 4 am he jumped on top of a car.
Could it be possibly hybrid cross mix between a wolf and a coyote?
In Michigan they supposedly are here. Cotswolf that is. The real name is target
Here in California they have also gotten bigger I thought I was crazy
In my area of lower elevation Pacific Northwest the coyotes are normal size but often form huge packs, I know some people say they do not do that, sorry that is BS, they do. They stay out of higher elevations though because we have wolves up there.
Coyotes in Alberta have been breading with dogs and wolves, and they are of a good size
I saw one in the San Juan's in SW Colorado at 11000ft in January
The eastern coyote is a hybrid of coyote and eastern wolf they average about 32% wolf its not uncommon to shoot a 50 pounder around here in Michigan
There’s a now population here in the Bronx coop city and the coyotes are actually really big
In ontario our coyotes have crossed with wolves i would say they average 60 to 70 pounds
We have coyotes here in new braunfels texas that are the size of german shepards i seen one thought it was a good boy then i realized that was no shepard that was a yote
The lower the wolf population, the more dog-wolf & Coywolf hybrid mixes you will find in that region.
Michigan ones look huge
In california they mix with some stray dog and get pretty big
Did you hear about the Alligator caught in West Virginia it's been on the local news.
The coyotes I'm hunting in north west ga is 50 to 60 lb
It was like meant to be for both if us lol.
coyotes love that environment
with the absence of wolves coyotes act a lot like wolves they will pack up and stuff it's pretty cool
From my understanding, wolves, coyotes and dogs are all essentially the same species, just different breads in different areas.
The coydog a massive coyote running the river bottom in Iowa last county in Iowa to have wolves
Google: What is a mountain coyote?
MOUNTAIN COYOTE. Canis latrans lestes5. Field characters. -General appearance that of a large collie dog (pl. 39a); head and body about 30 to 33 inches long, tail with hairs 12 to 15 inches; ears pointed, about 4-1/2 inches (114 mm.)
I am in Florida:
Not a big deal.
These things are all over the Midwest in Illinois. They are big
I’ve read the almost all eastern coyotes are wolf hybrids
The eastern coyotes have been tested that their wolf dna has increased and that they are becoming more and more wolf/coyote hybrid.
I’m the northeast we call them eastern coyote they have wolf blood
I regularly see coyotes in San Diego that are the size
Of large golden retrievers.
In Texas, 50lbs + Coyotes are common .
