  • Greetings of Peace my lovelies!
    CORRECTION (Main Hair Requirement) @9:00 - When performing wudu we should wipe over our heads completely (front to back & back to front).
    Come sit with me in my little corner as I discuss my thoughts on whether or not locs (also called dreads or dreadlock by some) are permissible for Muslim women. I have included two hadith and a Qur'an verse to support my line of thinking. This video is divided into parts, they are:
    1- Permissibility @2:20
    2- Proof @6:04
    3- Why I Let Go of My Locs @9:20
    4- Loving Bits of Advice @15:14
    Please pardon me, and may Allah forgive me, if I have said anything that is incorrect and/or a mistake. If you notice any errors/mistakes please don't hesitate to let me know. InshaaAllah this will be beneficial to someone. 💗

    It is important to note that when aiming to properly practice the beautiful deen of Islam we do not solely lean to our feelings. Allah (SWT) provides us with the Qur'an and examples of the last Prophet (SAWS) in order that we may learn and be properly guided, InshaaAllah. Thus, what I believe and feel regarding locs for Muslimahs is based on Qur'an verses and authentic ahadith - some of which are included in the video as supports for my line of thinking.
    Lastly, may we remember that Allah (SWT) has made very clear the things that are completely forbidden (haraam) for Muslim women and men. We should be careful not to make something a sin if Allah has not told us that it is a sin. Allahu alim.
    With love ❤

    Assalam aleikum sister. I've been researching about sistalocs and I'm glad i bumped into your video. Just a question i dont know if it's muslim culture or my tradition only but the dead have to have their hair undone first before their burial same as the case with fake teeth etc. Wouldn't this be stressful for sistalocs?

      Wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh Sister. Alhamdulillah MashaaAllah, I am glad the information was of some help to you.
      Regarding our final ghusl - there is gray area here and one's understanding of the requirements of our final ghusl may depend on which of the four schools of thought they follow. The main issue I've found is the differing of opinion in regards to whether or not the hair of the woman should be combed or not combed during her final ghusl. Here is one of the ahadith (authentic):
      ***It was narrated that Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: One of the daughters of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) died. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came to us and said: “Wash her with lotus leaves an odd number of times, three, or five, or more than that if you see fit, and put camphor in (the water) the last time, or a little camphor. And when you have finished, let me know.” When we had finished, we let him know, and he gave us his waist wrapper (to shroud her in). And we put her hair into three braids and put them behind her.
      Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1263; Muslim, 939***
      Based on my current knowledge, this could possibly mean that if a Muslim woman has locs and her locs are in a style at death then during her final ghusl that style would be loosened and her locs would be put into 3 braids (not that her locs would be undone). This is simply my interpretation, indeed Allah knows best.
      I will include links to more info. Some people have said the hair of the deceased should be combed and some say it should not be combed. Since there is gray area here, and not many ahadith about this specific issue, please be certain to pray tahajjud and ask Allah for clear guidance and sound knowledge about this topic.
      Some sisters may decide not to loc for the reason of being unsure of how locs play a part in the final ghusl. And, this is very understandable. May Allah guide us all and teach us what we do not know in order to best serve Him.

    Hello. love how you explained about the locks. But I have another question. is it allowed to use thread/wool to braid hair. not necessarily to have as extensions. But braiding your hair to keep it in a protective style? I know many muslim women do it in aftica. some say it is and others say it isn't. but I cannot find anywhere where it is directly mentioned in the Qur'an or hadith.
    Jazzak Allah khair sister

    • @ZeynabuLeVon
      @ZeynabuLeVon  Рік тому +1

      Hello 🌸 MashaaAllah, thank you. The question about adding wool/yarn to our hair is one of those things that fall into what I call "the grey area" meaning it has not been explicitly forbidden so, from my knowledge Qur'an and hadith, it is not haraam ... however it is makrooh. Makrooh actions are those that are technically allowed but best to avoid because there is some level of uncertainty. Islamic scholars have differences of opinion on this issue so will find and hear both answers as you search. Certain fatwas that have been issued tend to lean towards completely avoiding adding wool to be safe.
      Though wool/yarn is not human hair, if a woman adds it with the intention of deception then that would not be allowed. Also, if having a certain fiber added or having a certain style stops her from making wudu, ghusl, or offering her prayers then, of course, that would not be allowed.
      Here is a very thorough answer from a reputable Islamic site. Please read through it then make istikhara (two rakats and make the specific istikhara dua asking Allah to guide your heart to what is best and most acceptable to Him). islamqa.info/en/answers/106290/are-hair-extensions-haram

    Asc, how about cutting your natural locs and then reattaching them months later when your hair grows back? Is it permissible?

    • @ZeynabuLeVon
      @ZeynabuLeVon  7 місяців тому

      Wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I do not have authority to tell you if this is impermissible but I can share info with you and my opinion from my knowledge.
      If I were in that situation, I'd steer completely clear of it. I would not add my old locs to my hair and I would not add loc extensions to anyone's else's hair. Doing this would still fall under hair extensions (even if the hair was previously grown from your head). The unattached hair is dead hair and something is required to attach it (usually thread). The addition of some other item, like thread, is also an issue because we are not to add anything to our hair.
      Another reason we don't add to our hair is to steer clear of deception. Someone womem intentionally deceive others into believing they have hair that is longer or thicker than their hair actually is.
      islamqa.info/en/answers/106290/are-hair-extensions-haram
      May Allah guide us to act on the correct knowledge and what is most pleasing to Him.

    Assalamualaikum! Jazak Allahu khairan for this informative video. I'm curious as to what type of locs you had before cutting them. Traditional, sisterlocs, or something else? I'm interested in micro locs - are those heavy as well when wet?

    • @ZeynabuLeVon
      @ZeynabuLeVon  Рік тому

      Wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh 🌸 MashaaAllah wa iyyaki. I had traditional locs (about smedium size). I started them with two-strand twists instead of coils. I maintained them by coiling at first them switched to interlocking (because coiling did not work with me having to wet my hair often). My hair is thick and coily so the longer they got the heavier they became when wet. Microlocs may be less heavy due to them being less dense than traditional locs but I think with time and length they will have more weight (when wet) as well. I know some people don't allow their locs to grow past a certain length to avoid too much weight. If I ever loc my hair again I may do that. I wish you all the best on your loc journey!

    As Salam Aleykoum wa RahmatouLlah wa Bârakatouh,
    If you maintained your locs with interlocking, did you not have bumps and irregularities?
    I wanted to look for retwisting, but with the water required for wudu and ghusl it doesn't seem great

    • @ZeynabuLeVon
      @ZeynabuLeVon  11 місяців тому +1

      Wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh 🌸 We already talked on Instaram but I'm going to reply here also for anyone else who may have the same question.
      To avoid bumps and irregularities it is best to stick to one method of maintenance. For trouble with bumps in the lock when doing interlocking try an 8-point rotation and avoid making them too tight ... leave a bit of lose hair between the loc and thr scalp, if necessary. This will allow the loc more room to develop over time without being constricted.
      Yes, I agree. Regular retwists are sooo not wudhu or ghusl friendly. 😊 When I had my locs and attempted to keep a retwist it just did not work out due to having to wet my hair. With interlocking we can wash our hair, sweat, do ghusl or wudhu and not have to worry about the root of the loc loosening. I'm a big fan of interlocking for this reason and because it requires less product usage. Less product usage means less build-up and cleaner locs over time, inshaaAllah.
      Thank you for your question. 🌸

    • @ZeynabuLeVon
      @ZeynabuLeVon  Рік тому +3

      From my experience, to prevent odor from forming in locs, it is best not to cover them while they are damp or wet. If you wet your hair and the water can not escape or evaporate that may cause odor over time. In addition to that, keeping them clean and moisturized with natural oils may also help. I suggest avoiding thick products that can cause build-up and/or odor over time. Sleeping on clean sheets and pillow cases that do not cause lots of lint is also a good practice.

    Asalaamu alaikum sister. Shedded hair is just the final stage of the hair growth process. Loc wearers are not walking around with death in our locs. All visible hair is "dead" scientifically speaking.

    • @ZeynabuLeVon
      @ZeynabuLeVon  Рік тому

      Wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, sister. 🌸💗 Keep in mind that part 3 of this video are my personal reasons for letting go of my locs after 10+ years. Also, keep in mind the connection I am making between my spiritual trial as a widow in relation to my hair (hence me using the term “dead hair”). I am simply sharing my reasons and my thought process for letting go of my locs.
      To provide a few more details InshaaAllah: When a strand of hair dies the hair follicle is no longer in tact with the scalp. This is what I consider to be dead hair (hair that is ready to naturally shed and fall away from the head). The natural process of hair locking onto itself is a process where, over time, hair strands that are still attached to the scalp (alive) and hair strands that are no longer attached to the scalp (what I consider dead hair) tend to marry and/or are intertwined together. As a loc wearer grows their locs the hair that would have naturally fallen away from the head does not. This is because it is intertwined with living hair, and locs are not combed, so their is no de-shedding process like there is with unlocked hair. This means all hair stays with the loc wearer unless the wearer cuts or unlocks them. This is why locs get very thick and very long and heavy over a number of years. For anyone who has had locs for a number of years - the hair at the tips of their locs are likely not attached to the scalp anymore. If you have ever deconstructed a loc you can clearly see hair follicles denoting that many strands have detached from the scalp over time. When I took mine out there was a lot of hair that was loose and simply fell away. It was not coming from my scalp. It was the dead hair that had shed (detached from my scalp) but never had the chance to actually fall away because it was locked in with living hair.
      This is not necessarily a bad thing. It is simply the science behind locs and just something that I wasn’t fully comfortable with during a certain stage of my life.

    • @sumaiyahsmith7813
      @sumaiyahsmith7813 Рік тому

      @@ZeynabuLeVon Yes, I am aware that the shedded hair intertwines with the locs bc it has nowhere to go. That's why hair looks thinner when locs are combed out. I even explain it to my kids whenever I comb out their ends or trim it off.
      Alhamdolilah Allah made us He knows what we go through with our hair. It is just up to us to maintain it the best way we can in a permissible way.
      You know I'm your biggest cheerleader bc you put out content that would make any mother raising blk girls proud. ❤️ 🌺 So keep up the good work, we love seeing beautiful blk sisters in hijab on these platforms and we NEED to see them.

    How about using wool on your hair

      There is a difference of opinion for attaching wool. Islamically, whenever something is questionable it is best to steer clear of it. With using wool, I have learned that the wearer usually wants the wool to be the same color as their hair ... meaning it will resemble human hair. This can be problematic because it can fall into having the intention to be deceptive. The wearer wants their hair to have the appearance of being longer or thicker when truly, it is not. This is something I would advise against doing.
      Also, there is the question of if the wool will abstruct water from touching the scalp for ghusl. Only the wearer, or braider, would know this. So, that would be a self-reflective question.
      Since wearing wool is questionable, my advice would be not to do it.
      Hadith: Narrated An-Nu`man bin Bashir:
      The Prophet (ﷺ) said "Both legal and illegal things are obvious, and in between them are (suspicious) doubtful matters. So whoever forsakes those doubtful things lest he may commit a sin, will definitely avoid what is clearly illegal; and whoever indulges in these (suspicious) doubtful things bravely, is likely to commit what is clearly illegal. Sins are Allah's Hima (i.e. private pasture) and whoever pastures (his sheep) near it, is likely to get in it at any moment." Sahih al-Bukhari 2051

      Wa alaykum as salaam - certain details of my eating or food choices may change from time to time. When I did alkaline vegan it was experimental for a set amount of time. After that I was pescatarian, not vegetarian. Right now I am neither of the above.
