    the advantage that the "new" battery system was it could run several trains at once because of the mutli frequency IR system. The drawback to the 9v metal rail system was the fact it could run just 1 loco like the old DC systems on normal model railroads. Finally giving Lego DCC systems following the typical NMRA system is perfect, since you could then adapt DCC systems like Digitrax command stations to lego railroads, and allow the use of JMRI (and as such the JMRI's Engine Driver Adrioid App or WiThrottle for Apple).

    • @FxBricks

      Simple DC voltage speed control is actually awesome and still very relevant today. Its simplicity and robustness are perfect for many folks especially new-comers to the hobby. Having said that, DCC is a fantastic standard with a long and mature pedigree. If you were watching the video carefully at the 05:47 mark, you'll see a brief screen-cap of my JMRI controlled layout!

  • @Tom55data
    @Tom55data 3 роки тому

    Though I completely agree with you new system and the options it provides, I do think the pulse modulation offered on the power functions (battery) provided a very good solution to smooth running of trains that variable voltage suffers from in a cheap and simple form. Since power is V^2.R (voltage squared), you can see that the power generated by a motor is the square of the voltage which means that voltage regulated trains suffer terribly from difficult starting and slow down when under partial load. The pulse modulation used results in power being directly proportional to the on cycle meaning low speeds are better regulated and smooth/constant.
    DCC can circumvent this varying the voltage to autoregulate the speed, but still suffers from stutter and temporary slowdowns due to the squared relationship since it is still fundamentally a voltage regulated speed control and how long the motor/circuitry responds to voltage regulation .
    I think what you are doing a a great option for advanced builders of trains and opens up a huge possibility for lego trains. Thank you very much for setting this up.
    For most people with not so much money, I do think the power-functions pulse modulation was actually a good option for train play without the worry of circuit design causing shorting and makes it easy for us simple users to have smoother trains usage than that even from OO or O guage. Plenty of space for both options in the Lego world; I really hope your system takes off.

    I wonder if you will add cross overs aswell as curved switches and isolation sections

    • @FxBricks
      @FxBricks  3 роки тому +4

      A typical crossover can be made with two ordinary switches (which we are making). If you were referring to a 90 degree crossing or diamond crossing, then the decision to make those is still pending. Our initial roadmap shows a 90 deg crossing as well as a 40-stud long Right and Left diamond crossing but the expensive tooling costs of the P40 switch make us realize that these crossing items will be luxury and likely not happen any time soon (if at all). In terms of isolation sections, we will likely produce this as a variant of our S8 (short 8 stud straight) track. The idea is to include a small mechanical switch to turn the isolation on or off. Since the S8 straight is a necessary item in many siding and yard ladder configurations using our P40 switch, it is the best candidate to perform this role of isolating sections of track.

    Also DCC could also allow for fully automated trains that can run on layouts automatically without any human input so trains could automatically alternate between each other on looping layouts! It’s also likely that the 9V power functions outputs on motor bogies could have their voltages controlled in a DCC system so it could allow for a traditional power functions 9V LEGO motor bogie to be used as a second motor in a locomotive while it could also be utilised for decretive motorised mechanisms and lights to be used on trains! :)

    Great news for us 9V lovers! Don't forget wheels and metal axles. Hope you won't get bought by LEGO in a few years and smashed against the wall. I guess it's just a matter of time until the LEGO bricks will also be replaced by compatible bricks in MOCs. BrickLink sellers with good train parts stock are becoming more rare since the merger.

    This is awesome! I have a lot of 9v track but mostly curves. I can’t wait to upgrade my layout to this new system.

    This is gonna be sold out for a long time. Thank you, and good luck!
    I've been wanting to build a lego table for my niece to play on, wondering how I'd incorporate my black and yellow train with just the stock track. Looking forward to this!

    Amazing. Brining a new product to market is an extremely difficult and expensive task, especially when it is a product like this with accurate tolerances! great work!

    I'm interested to know if the new motors will be able to be remote controlled to build a fully automated layout. The problem with the old 9v was that all the trains on it got the same amount of power. The plastic rails haven't worried me much as I figure I can just put conductive tape over the top to make a metal rail.

    This video brings so much joy!!! I'm now hoping lego releases a new train for 2021. Something like the retired Santa Fe or Maersk. Thanks for your work and I will be patronizing your business 👌🏾

    Awesome. I’ve got a lot of original 12V trains and its a bastard to find track in Australia in any quantity at reasonable prices.

    I got one of the 9v sets, think it was black and yellow, with a bunch of extra track, I'm so glad I managed to hold on to it over the years. At least I hope it made it through this last move now that I think about it... was not happy when I went to buy more track and another set to find out there was none to buy by that point. Just hope Lego is ok with you guys doing this but it looks like you have been around a bit with some interesting items that I wish I knew about before.

    Hello from Germany, I'm glad you got the 9 system picks up again and I'm glad that the rails are reasonably available in Germany, I would be happy if you could imitate the rails that Lego produced in which country you actually produce the rails

    Awesome. I have an almost complete Lego Wild West town and Fort Legorado , with an eight car, old locomotive train MOC. I have a small oval metal track, but would really love to expand this to go around my large Lego city.

    What I have always wanted but never was able to have was the Monorail Transport System from the Futron line and the MonoRail Transport Base from the Unitron line
    But there was always a part of me as a kid who wanted lego trains as well. I hope one day I can build all my old M-Tron sets with my son (he's now 2) and Hopefully one day I can finally finish my M-Tron collection (I really need only the Mega Core Magnetizer IIRC)

    Oh dang that’s awesome! I think the larger clubs would love to run again without the need to constantly charge batteries. It’s probably going to take a few years to switch everything over if they go for it, though. There’s A LOT of already built railbed already out there.
    And assuming we’re ever allowed to gather in large numbers again...
