An Update From Granby - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

- Steve will be staying in Granby full time for the near future to be with family. Here's an update on what that means for videos going forward for now. Next week, look out for a video on a visit Steve made to an Oyster farm back in Maine. And if Steve is able to get away again, he's hoping to head back north to pick up Victoria and bring her back to Granby to do some repairs and hopefully get the sailing rig put together at long last.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

This is something I was blessed to help my parents's through. They both died with dignity at home 18 years apart. Having the oppurtunity to be with them through their journey was a gift many don't get and some wont take. After it is over they still live on inside of us, Good luck and God bless!

Steve & Robin let Steve's Mother know she done a great job of being a Mother, all of are thoughts and prayers for her and all.
So many of us have been on this journey, I lost my mum 14 years ago. We stayed with her at home to the end. The memories of that time will always remain with us, there was laughter, joy, tears, great sadness and above all love.
As a hospice nurse I would say, cherish this time. It is so bittersweet. I hope you have a good hospice team behind you to help navigate this journey. I’m holding space for your mom.

I came across your channel by mistake several years ago looking for forging videos and found your video on the pouring the 100 gallons of lead for your keel, I've been hooked for the last 6 years or so watching Arabella "grow up" and consider my self lucky to see a small part of your life. All my love and support to you are your family at this difficult time. Take as much time as you need to focus on what is really important, I'll be happy to watch videos of hay bailing until you return.

Courage to you and your family in these hearts times.
Two things. First, as a young guy in the 60’s I did so much hay bucking that I still shake my head in wonder. Having said that, it’s fun to see the old school hay conveyor and the family doing this chore together.
Second, I feel your pain re your Mom. A person only gets one mom and it’s a tough part of life at the end. My sympathies ❤️

I lost my wife earlier this year after a very short progress through aggressive cancer and then sepsis. It's a tough, tough journey for everyone involved, and we all have to deal with it in our own ways. Do what you need to do, folks, and it takes as long as it takes. As I write this, there are apparently 7,247 who have seen this video, and there won't be a single one of them that doesn't wish you well. Take care.

I heard that one day you’ll smile with the thought of them. It’s been almost 5 yrs and I think it’s happened once for me. Just went through this with my father. He fought ALS for 10 years. I was lucky to be able to spend a week a month with my parents for the last year, helping and just spending time together. He just passed the Friday after Memorial Day.
