Thankyou Rob as always, an interesting video showing the differences between various hardness of ferros and strikers, you gotta do your homework for sure. I was a little surprised that my new F1x is showing actual marks on the spine from my ferro rod use, I thought the elmax was so hard it wouldnt do that, so I may use a striker to save the knife. One thing I wanted to share about bugs ( mossies in particular ) is this . Last year the old Irish guy next door told me to put vicks vapo rub on bites to stop the itch, I was sceptical but it works a treat , my misses used it on a cold sore too with good results, hey you probably know already but I like to repeat things cause I am old and got nothing better to do
I love your outdoor videos. I haven’t gotten a taste for the leather working ones yet but that will come when I have time to start making my own sheaths. I have a suggestion for you to try. Don’t cut your sticks down. Leave them long and rest an end on a stump, rock ( be careful) or something else for stability. You can even make feather sticks while standing which comes in handy when your back is not feeling great. Feather one side, then the other. Because I usually have my folding knife, I hold it primarily with my thumb and forefinger to give my hand more clearance for knots, large diameter sticks, etc. Yes. I use almost any stick I pick up to make my feather sticks. I only get picky when making curls for ignition. When I cut, I end up with a stroke like using a paint roller. Like paint the fence....up, down...breathe in through nose..out mouth. When I start making videos, I will be sure to tag you. It should be interesting.
Best Tip Curls ever. Been lookin at them Uberleben rods, so this was spooky timely for me. And, i been using one of them Eze "strikers" for a long time now, i do like it more than the spine strike method even with a Mora.
Hey Rob. I always like watching your video content. I’m curious. What is the brand name of the Jacket and pants you’re wearing in this video? Thanks in advance.
@@RobEvansWoodsman Thanks a lot, Rob 👍 That‘s what my experience with beech wood also says, when I tried to make feathersticks with it. And I thought it would be my missing skills
Hazel is great. I have only seen the one referred to as pussy willow around here. I also like using maple, ash, poplar, tulip poplar, birch and sometimes oak. A friend of mine said apple wood burned so good and hot, he wanted to plant a whole orchard just to cut it down and burn it. I haven’t had the pleasure of burning that one yet.
Coalcracker brushcraft just did a video on ferro rods , I thought you did a better and more entertaining video on the ferro rods. I'm more petrol and match man my self.
I’m new to axecraft. I’ve heard to never pry sideways with the axe as it might break the handle. Is there a developed feel the video maker has developed that tells him it’s ok or is the wood just so small and weak he knew it wasn’t a problem?
I wouldn't put my full strength or weight into a pry with an axe, it really should not break with just arm strength, unless you are the Hulk or Brian Shaw.

Great wee video, fantastic feather sticks.Enjoy your second cup of tea.
Good video Rob..all the best Lincoln 🤙👍
I do like that outdoor axe, great feather sticks, they are therapeutic making them.👍🏻
Yes Dave they are, I need therapy!!
@@RobEvansWoodsman don't we all mate.😁👍
I must have like 20 rods and the uberleben is still my favourite
Thankx Rob

I really don't like resting my feather sticks and carving down but I occasionally make them to the side standing up.

The bar is good but I'd prefer a light my fire.
Excellent video great feather sticks 👍
Nice feathersticks as always 👌 And the tip tip is a great tip 😁
Uberleben = surviving
Nice video, I like their round rods alone, I'll have to get one of those flat sided rods.
Great video as always. I like a harder ferro rod myself.
Me too.
I must put the joke down and slowly back away.
It also came across my dirty mind.

Helikon Tex, excellent kit, I just ordered another garment, a shirt.
Nice vid Rob. Bye the way what was the bug on the left side of your shirt just below the neck line at approx 11m 40s? Atvb Malcolm 🏴
It wasn't a bug it was from the Beech tree.
Great video, Rob! How would you rate beech wood for making feathersticks?
Awful!!!
Don't bother, only good broadleaf trees for feather sticks are Hazel and Willow
I will answer if you are ok with that. Beech is usually pretty terrible for feathers. The grain is almost always twisted.

Thanks mate, my preference is a nice big match!
My preference is a roaring fire. I'm not too particular how it was lit.

Or Tom Stoltman 🏴 💪🏻😉
I said Brian Shaw because I assumed that the gentleman was from the USA.
I hate it when my feather stick goes wobbly. I'm sure Rad Brad doesn't have that problem 😊
Brads rod never wobbles!
