Neo-psych outfit MGMT returns with a fuzzy new album that's got plenty of odd moments, but too few memorable ones.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?

You will hate this album until you don’t.
MGMT even said, “look guys, you’re gonna need to listen to it more than once before you stop hating it”, and it’s true. First listen, even as a die-hard Congratulations fan (so I like their weird psychedelic stuff to begin with), my immediate thought was “what the fuck is this”. But the more I listened and god, READ THE LYRICS (this is lyrically their most profound album by a longshot), I learned to DIG this album. Especially some of the darker feeling songs like Cool Song No. 2.
Listen to it more than once and read the lyrics. It grows on you. It really does.
Fantano said the lyrics have no meaning, yet gave a Death Grips album a 10. Lmfao I agree with you 100%, but don’t expect the Melon to get it.
@@psychedelicpiper999 TRUE
Was just bumping Cool Song No. 2 and decided to look this video up
I may seem weird but I loved this album on the first listen cool song no.2, plenty of girls in the sea and alien days are some of my favorite mgmt tracks and are only not in the top of my list cause of other songs like one thing left to try and weekend wars
I remember cool song no. 2 used to completely blow my mind tripping on acid
About the compression, MGMT stated they wanted this album to be focused on listening with headphones. The sound is designed so it sounds better close to your ears, but sounds really weird coming out of speakers.
***** That implies that everyone who likes it is stupid because it's unlistenable or they have shit headphones.
***** k
Try the vinyl. Big difference.
@@psychedelicpiper999 Also on a psychedelic. Holy *FUCK* they know exactly what they're doing. I kinda pity anyone who doesn't really "get" this album because they're missing out on a masterpiece that, in my opinion, will go down as a cult classit. Maybe even spawn its own genre (which I plan to add to once I'm more skilled and experienced). This is my favorite album of all time, and along with Little Dark Age, it changed how I perceive music forever.
@@SonGoku-iw4zk Well, it already is the genre of psychedelic music. MGMT were just following in the footsteps of 60’s psychedelic pioneers like Syd Barrett, The Red Crayola, and The Silver Apples. Animal Collective’s “Centipede Hz” from 2012 has a similar vibe as well. I do agree it’s a masterpiece, and my friends liked it immediately, too.
I feel like Fantano is unqualified to comment on psychedelic music. I’ve never actually heard him mention a classic artist I enjoyed in a video, outside some mainstream ones like The Beatles and post-Syd Pink Floyd. His understanding of the genre is fledgling, despite being a fan of a lot of post-modern indie experimental music,
I agree that this album's sound can be overwhelming at first, but I think that's the kind of energy they wanted it to have. After having listened to this album probably 100 times, I've started to hear the intricacies in it's sound and it's a lot less suffocating. MGMT's music is challenging and that's what I love about it. This is their most sophisticated album yet and it's a testament to how far they've come as artists. Favorite song is I Love You Too, Death. MGMT rocks!
I agree. But its also not just challenging for the sake of being challenge. I have yet to hear anything that i feel quite matches the weird sadness of this album
this is a 10/10 for me
It makes me so happy to see other like-minded listeners. To me, no album compares to the raw spiritual power of MGMT's self-titled and Little Dark Age. They changed my life, no hyperbole.
this album changed my whole idea of music, i can't get it out of my head
Comments like these warm my heart. It makes me feel like the music I love is not just a fake illegitimate genre based on noisy gimmicks intended to appeal to drugged out hippies. Psychedelic music is far more than that. Even before I got into artists like MGMT and Animal Collective, I used to get hate when I was younger for exclusively digging Syd Barrett, and other ‘weird’ psychedelic rock from the 60’s and early 70’s.
I guess while most people these days associate angst and rebellious energy with genres like heavy metal, hardcore, screamo, rap, or artists like Death Grips, psychedelic music to me is my form of angst and rebellion. It’s musical anarchy. And MGMT capture it perfectly on this record.
Everyone who likes the same music as me that I turned onto this record loved it. It was actually a friend who told me to listen to it.
10/10
Agree! Glad to see more fans who don't hate this album just because it isn't a replica of "Oracular Spectacular"! I always find band's least popular albums are usually what seems the most genuine. Though little dark age was pretty big and is, I think probably the most genuine of all. (Not including their two newer singles released in the previous years, i'm only talking about albums)
I Love You Too, Death is probably one of my favorite MGMT songs
Personally, Alien Days is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, song MGMT has written. I love that Andrew Van Wyngarden is exploring the lower part of his vocal range. This album definitely takes more than one listen to thoroughly understand and get into, but I love it.
Finally! I love how Andrew doesn't sing very low often (at least not for a good portion of a song) and I love how when he does it's so damn good! Like I love his deeper voice! Especially on Alien Days, James (it's phenomenonal on this track), and In the afternoon. Andrew truly has a gift
@@trinket5969 Absolutely! It's so exciting and fresh every time. Here's hoping there's more to come!
If you "get" Pink Floyd, you will "get" MGMT. They have gotten better and better with age, as have their lyrics. The new album is fantastic, especially the track, "I Love You Too, Death". Listen to it again with the lyrics.
Especially if you're a big fan of the Syd Barrett-era Floyd and their album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn".
I Love You Too, Death is so fucking beautiful. Easily in the top 5 songs MGMT have ever done.
Leavemealoneabout Usingmyname no love for Metanoia? It's a masterpiece imo. Really underrated
nigga, wtf is this comment? downright blasphemy on Pink Floyd, I would say.
Martial Amos I'm pretty sure you're just close minded
I don't know why people are upset about the changes they make with each album. I really enjoy every one of their songs, especially this new album.
Dude mgmt has always been a psych band kids and electric feel are not the only songs on the first album
Yeah bro you have time to pretend 😔 dumb dumb head I'm just joking of birds moons and monsters and youth are insane
@@crispy17X lol
I love this album a ridiculous amount. It took a few listens to really appreciate it, but I love all the aspects of each song and the use of improvisation. I would also differ and say that it's a pretty dark album as a whole. Every time I listen to one of the songs, I find something new, especially on songs like I Love You Too, Death, Alien Days, and An Orphan Of Fortune.
Same.
It makes me so happy that other people love I Love You Too Death the way I do.
I know I'm a couple years late but I Love You Too Death is unlike any song I've ever heard and it means so much to me
the deeper meanings in "MGMT" is what makes such a fantastic piece of art, but I can see why he doesn't like it
Man, Maangchi is great. Thanks for the shoutout to discovery Anthony!
One of the most impactful and meaningful album listening experiences I have ever had, personally
"It's kind of like a casserole" reminds me of the windshield burrito critique for Centipede Hz
In my opinion I think mgmt’s mgmt is there best album. I love the entire feeling of it. With the strung out echoes, enormous reverb, trippy synth’s, twinkly guitar’s, spaced out drums, and the overall existential crisis the album conveys is beautiful. I think All art is like a time capsule for the artist and I feel you can really see that with mgmt. this album they finally wanted to just make the things they wanted to make and get all the pressure of there past successes off there chest. And I think a lot of the albums concepts reflect what the guys were feeling. 1000/10 for me.
I like MGMT even more since this record came out. I listen to it constantly.
Rereview this album.
Absurdly needed.
it is really enjoyable. i didn't really go into it on this review, but i did say that it's not like the band's other stuff on oracular didn't have psych tendencies. they weren't completely an electronic pop outfit.
Congratulations is their most professional sounding album. It's great. So is Oracular Spectacular for different reasons. But this album was made anti-radio friendly on purpose per MGMT.
Disagree with this review. A Good Sadness is quite possibly the best song MGMT has written thus far... Followed pretty closely by An Orphan of Fortune. So spacious and mindblowing... Fucking love MGMT!~
this album is a psychedelic masterpiece to anyone who knows anything. Fantano is not only missing out on a lot of good music but it seems like he's missing a lot of important knowledge of the progress / evolution of psychedelic and experimental music. for example, if you know bands like Silver Apples, The Red Crayola, Syd Barrett (extremely important, influential artists), it's easy to see how incredible this record is. That being said it isn't easy to really understand what MGMT are doing in their sound or lyrics without knowledge of the music that inspired them.
Another important thing to note here is how the best albums almost ALWAYS get overlooked or misunderstood at the time of their release. because most people won't get it or accept it immediately, also because there isn't really a ton of people who understand where they are coming from. i mean, fuck Congratulations got a lot of backlash when it came out, and we all know that album is among the greatest
+Don Koovey Agreed, This is why I can't stand Fantano.
congratulations and this album are tied although for different reasons.
Just wanted to say that you guys convinced me to give Flatbush Zombies another close listen and a review soon. I'll also be putting up the Kayo Dot review soon.
Thanks for letting us know!
And when we getting a review of the new artist The Weeknd, he dropped some good mixtapes
The loudness wars do affect this album, though. The dynamic range is twice as much on the vinyl, and it sounds a lot more spacious, while still retaining the experimental clustered feel. Way easier to turn the album up and hear out all the elements. Animal Collective's "Centipede Hz" album had a similar issue. When in doubt, hunt down the vinyl. Or vinyl rips in my case. ;)
Aren't you the "needledrop"? You should really start taking into account the vinyl release when you review an album.
Personally, I prefer the second side so far.
second side is best side
I just checked the vinyl rip. You're absolutely right. Uploading it right now.
MGMT. What masterminds. LDA is personally my favorite album but this one is a close second.
Masterpiece of an Album
I think you were definitely spot on when you talked about how there were certain sounds that didn't really need to be there and the kinda hazy fuzzy sounds that make it not sound as good especially and most specifically through headphones.
The album doesn't sound that experimental i've listened to other songs that kind of have the same ambient/mellow feel that a lot of the songs on this album have.
You really have to be in the right mood to really enjoy this kind of music.
Songs like "I love you too, Death" and "Cool Song No. 2" make the album way more spiritual than the albums before. There is no real direction or line you could follow through the whole album, which makes it so interesting.
Didn't like it at first but now it's my favourite album.
Just wanted to say that I write album reviews and you are one of my inspirations when it comes to how I view and give my opinion on music. You're awesome as hell and keep rocking man. Forever. :)
this album is brilliant and if you are intrigued on the first listen just keep revisiting it and you will get what it's all about as time goes on. its definitely their most mature album and is covered in fuzz and distortion so you must listen closely to the little details of the record its not a one time listen you're supposed to hear something new every time you hear it. orphan of fortune is the best closer they have yet to end an album with.
Nice review and album summary. Agree with you on Astro Mancy. However, I would overall disagree with your rating of this album. First, you completely ignored tracks like Introspection and An Orphan of Fortune. Both solid and great pieces of music. Good hook on Introspection and fabulous rhythm on Orphan of Fortune. But take great exception with your underselling of A Good Sadness. It may be MGMT's best song to date. After listening to that track over and over, at initial hearings was mesmerized by the sonic depths and heights put into that track. But now appreciate the great vocal work on that piece. It takes you on a journey of sound, a starry night roller coaster ride of life, where it uses the vocals to create an emotional attachment that soars and descends into a trough and back up again and settles into a middle easing at the end, with fading sonic pops and whistles. Certainly respect your views and opinions on this album, but favor this album slightly over Congratulations. This is one of the few established bands out there trying to reinvent and innovate with sound. Looking forward to their next release.
couldn't agree with you more. Andrew used his voice almost an instrument on alot of this album, but especially on "A Good Sadness".
I agree with your review, Anthony. I think it would be interesting if you made a "revisited" video, explaining what you think of some popular albums, including MGMT, after letting it sink in some more.
still need to try it. i've always felt watain's approach to black metal grows more and more generic with each record, but i'll give the new one a try.
CHEERFUL? LIGHTHEARTED? WHAAAAAAAT??????
to this day, we're still speculating if Anthony actually listened to this album
Haha yeah. To be honest, I feel like this album hits feelings of humour, absurdity and downright terrifying. How many albums do you know that can achieve that?
It's their darkest album, by far. Like damn. I read somewhere that Andrew was crying during most of the making of this album. You can hear his anguish.
@@psychedelicpiper999 Where did you read that? I have a difficult time believing this without a source.
@@mikeexits Forgot where. Must have read it while browsing an MGMT fan forum, but you’re right, there’s no real source for it that I recall. I don’t have a difficult time believing it, though, given that, by all accounts, Andrew was going through a difficult time in life in general. He’s said so himself in interviews.
I don't agree with you saying "A Good Sadness" would fit on The Terror.
The Terror as an album is INSANELY underwhelming, with what sounds like is gunna be a vast experience falling terribly short on each track.
"A Good Sadness" is a much more complex, ambitious composition than anything the Lips have put out recently.
MGMT took the whole "lets just jam on synthesizers and make songs out of that" approach that Animal Collective and the Lips have been doing for a while now and completely blew it out of the water.
This self-titled record really shows that not only are they good songwriters and lyricists, but master composers as well.
At first, this album sounded kinda "flat", like it was just noise, but the more you listen to it, the deeper you can fall into its sounds.
"Astro-Mancy" is probably the best example of this because it might sound like one of the simpler tracks on the album, but its actually very meticulously calculated.
Best way to listen to this album?
Personally, the CD in my car sounds phenomenal. I set the treble all the way up and the bass about halfway, to really give it that punchy aesthetic. Sounds great through headphones, too, but I'm not saying earbuds, I'm saying real, big phones, preferably those specifically made for electronic music(I use Hesh 2's). And also like some guy said before me, just mess around with the equalizer. You'd be surprised at how many other things you can pick up on and really notice what a puzzle it was to mix an album like this
Wise words man
Yeah, I honestly can't stand the Lips. They're good producers, but awfully generic composers. Most people bring up the Lips as if they're the godfathers of psychedelic music, but they're not even close if you're actually aware of all the pioneers from the 60's and 70's. And yes, I've heard Zaireeka. Pretty average album. Both MGMT and Animal Collective are far superior composers and lyricists. But I will also admit MGMT eclipsed Animal Collective in a lot of ways with this album. Terribly impressive for a band that hasn't been playing psychedelic music for that long.
you're getting really good with the video editing and stuff Anthony!
I liked this record more than their first
Thank you for bringing up the dynamic compression! Yeah, I'm with you on thinking that it was an artistic move, although a bit overdone. Gonna see them live this weekend, hoping that some of the instrumentation is brought to it's fullest :)
I know you commented on it the other day, but I'd really like to see a more fleshed out (no pun intended) review for Flashbulb Zombies
This album was good but not great. It was very experimental and MGMT really know how to make trippy music. I hope they make more albums like Congratulations and not like Oracular. Oracular was only really popular because of Kids and Electric Feel. I would rather them make an album that focuses more on Psychedelic music then just another Kids album. Congratulations was probably MGMT at their peak. That album had some great Psychedelic Rock in it. I hope they make more tracks over 10 minutes. As for this album, I would give this a 6.5 or a 7.
I agree with your views on Congratulations. I don't think MGMT will ever top it, but this album is pretty good
Congrats was a masterpiece to me one of the top 10 albums of all time in my opinion...
spooninspoon congratulations is our generations Dark side of the moon... personally my favorite album of all time.
Agreed... It almost pisses me off that it didn't get the attention it deserved. I waited 30 years for an album like that to come out, didn't know music was capable of being that dynamic, dark and fun all the same time
I know this comment is 3 years old but with the new single out, I just came back to this video and I agree 100% with your comment
hahahahaha oh my god, dat intro! loving the new absurd intros and new text styles, keep it up bro
I LUV MAANGCHI
An incredible album. Gotta love that bass gliding up and down on I Love You Too, Death. The instrument ensemble on Cool Song No.2 is odd and yet they end up complementing themselves unusually well. A tribal song with acoustic piano, how cool is that (pun intended).
I'm actually really enjoying this album. I don't remember being too into Congratulations, but I think I'll check it out again. Good review.
I liked this album. I appreciate MGMT continuing to experiment and really develop themselves as artists. I agree with Anthony, that some of the tracks seem a little jumbled or lacking in direction. Other tracks like Alien Days and An Orphan of Fortune I think are successful experiments, they really walk a nice line between cheerful/silly and sad/disturbed/quirky.
I personally like A Good Sadness. Your Life is a Lie is funny and on point.
I love how needle drop is so true, if he likes the band he still has to see the cons, but at the same time he's fair with the pros, hes a really good reviewer, Your awesome needledrop! And should i get this album? if no then what other album should i get from another artist?
It takes a lot to the fathom this piece of art right here. Simple minds can't grasp it, and intellectual minds can't process it. You have to completely be one with this project and accept it for exactly what it is and that would be a masterpiece. Lol when I had heard MGMT was coming out with a new project, I instantly bought some DMT and the album within the same day. That may have influence as to why I feel so strongly about the music, however the message that this album withholds is even truer and deeper than I had originally thought upon my first listen. Great review Anthony, even greater album! Salute.
Boooo! This album so deserves more than a 5-6.
In your opinion.
***** Yes, and this is in his opinion.
It's a 10 for me. 11/10 if I could.
Can you review anything on Hooray for Earth or Midnight Juggernauts? Also, maybe a track review on the Twin Shadow song "Old Love/New Love" that dropped a couple of days ago?
Im always thinking about this album when Im working. I love it! mystery disease and introspection are stuck in my head.
Also that was by far your best intro I've ever seen.
c;
So glad you decided to give Flatbush Zombies another listen. Hopefully you'll enjoy it more this next time around.
This album needs more than one listen to really enjoy it. First i like the difference from Congratulations and Oracular Spectacular and then i found the best in every song. Dark and crazy i would say are the words to think about the album
This album was really fun to listen to for me, and it takes a few listens to sink in completely. I like it a lot, it's not better than Congratulations by any means but I like it more than Oracular Spectacular as an album. This is a good solid piece of music, and it explores sounds that are really bizarre and interesting, which I really enjoy.
Telecaster Magician Also I wouldn't call this album very lighthearted at all, it feels like such a dark album for me, and can be ambiguous at times
true says except i don't personally like to compare MGMT's records for which ones are 'better' or whatever, it's obvious they are all totally different. Congratulations is a very, very special album, but for different reasons, to me, this last record is just as special, but in a different light. it is definitely their darkest release so far. no argument there
for example like be careful tripping on psychedelics with this album. things can get spooky. i was having visions of microscopic drones surveilling every square CM of earth, futuristic glass screens stretching across skyscrapers, tiny robotic reptiles slithering between matter in impossible holographic states somehow able to extract physical materials. there are some very strange vibrations in this album, definitely some paranoia and weirdness about our technological state
Don Koovey It sounds like they made this album with the mindset of the year being 3054 and they've colonised the very deepest stretches of space, but something evil lurks in the unknown planets.
Don Koovey I've seen them post teasing the 4th LP on twitter but not seen any videos
I looove the way the album is produced. For the exception of YLIAL, i love the "bigness" that it has. Synth sounds are always incredible. and the more you listen to the second side the better it gets
I really loved their first two albums so I'll probably give this a listen when I get a chance. I'm going to try and go into it with no preconceptions and a open mind. Also on a side note, check out Maangchis's vids on Korean fried chicken and the Korean hot pepper paste. Stuff is delicious if you're into spicy things.
is there a way there could be a specific place for album review requests, and a separate place for people actually discussing the album that's being reviewed in the video?
Production and engineering wise this is my favorite album of all time already, but I'm really into albums that are full of sound twists like Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante'.
Where'd you get that Asian lady?
That's Maangchi! She taught me how to make some bomb-ass food!
i gotta say i was looking forward to this album and when it came out i was a little let down. i don't know really what i was expecting but hopefully they can pull together something more cohesive in another year or two.
i think context is important, but i talked about the sound of the album plenty, i thought.
Will you make a compilation video of all your Cal moments? Please?
i think they try and layer sounds so that each time you discover something new about it
i was extremely disappointed with this album when i first heard it but it truly grows on you.
I really liked this new album. Ive been a fan of MGMT since forever and ive liked every type of music they've done. I like that they like to mix things up and not stay in one specific genre.
Anthony! Please review the new Balance & Composure and the new Touche Amore!
you should make a video where you tell us your favorite movies, that's would be awesome
I overall liked this album. I like the direction of going more toward psychedelic rock. I completely agree with the compression thing. I found that listening to a few songs then going back for the rest made the it more bearable
Review
Haken: The Mountain.
Kayo Dot: Hubardo
Jesu: Every Day I Get Closer To The Light From Which I Came
Thank you for going in depth about the production on this album. I'm glad I didn't drop $30 just to have it on vinyl! My $9 CD will do just fine, considering the extreme compression. I would suggest a terrine rather than a casserole as your food analogy, though.
I think it's really good imo, because of the sounds sound really familiar and have a melody to them, but i respect your opinion and think its good, great video.
I love the Maangchi cameo. Was not expecting it here though.
I came to this video with a heavy heart. After reading many reviews of this new album with none of them matching my opinions, and all of them giving horrible reviews...The Needle Drop gives a review in which he actually justifies the problems and successes of the record.
I would have given in a 7, but your views this time are spot on!
You have to review The Growlers albums!!!!
MGMT is a great band because every their new record is EXCITING
Please review the things we think we're missing by Balance and composure or Anonymous by Stray from the path
thinking of both.
I'd love it if Anthony would review Elvis Costello and the Roots' new collaboration
Could you review the new Placebo album? :) Would love to hear your opinion on it!
I first time I listened to it I felt that flaming lips connection, makes total sense now why it was so apparent. But I dig that, the album was great. I can't wait to see what else they pull out next.
I feel pretty much the same about this Album. But because I really love some tracks (most notably Alien Days and Your life is a lie), it's a decent 6 for me.
In my opinion this was the best listen I've had all year. For me, the compression didn't ruin it that much for me, and I found myself enjoying almost every track on here.
'A good sadness' sounds like latter Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan solo material. Like almost an exact copy. Surprised you went with the comparison to 'The Terror' instead.
When are you reviewing the Flatbush Zombies mixtape?
PLEASE REVIEW LITTLE DARK AGE! The album is coming out on friday! I agree with this review quite a lot, but this 4th album seems quite exciting!
@theneedledrop
have u heard their album b4 Oracular Spectacular? b4 they officially changed their name to MGMT, they released "climbing to new lows" :I jus wonderin, any thoughts?..
I still haven't seen you review Franz Ferdinand's new album, but correct me if you have. You may not be a fan, but it's a release from a band that many do take seriously and deserves a fair shake.
That's what it does. It hits you the hardest in the beginning and then fades. I will say that there are 3 songs that have not faded. Apoc. Dreams, Gotta Be Above It, and Elephant. Those are the most interesting and least repetitive ones. Mind Mischeif is pretty good too. Beyond that, I don't listen to any other track anymore from the album. They got stale really quick.
You should review Dustin Wong's Mediation of Ecstatic Energy
Good review, I personally still like this album a lot, A Good Sadness is probably one of my favourite songs by them.
i wont give up till you review volcano choir
I first heard the album, and I liked the first 2 songs only. Then, a few months later, I listened again, and I enjoyed it.
what about climbing to new lows? was that not the first?
any chance of a ruins of beverast review? blood vaults! it's metal, and i like metal and i think you do too. thanks friend-o
I guess I never liked who MGMT wanted to be then. What's your take on "In Rolling Waves" by The Naked And Famous?
An orphan of fortune is top 3 mgmt songs
You should review Moving Mountains' new self titled album!
A Good Sadness feels like hoe the outer space level in Super Paper Mario looks
6/10 was unexpected. This is my second favourite MGMT album behind either Congratulations or their Time To Pretend EP. Had a very Animal Collective vibe to it. I'm glad they're not afraid of trying different things and by God it turned out well. Alien Days, Cool Song no.2, Mystery Disease, Your Life Is A Lie, A Good Sadness, they're all fucking masterpieces. No idea how you dislike this album enough to give it 6. 8.5/10 from me
They only have 3 LP's. So what.
Rick Deckard What?
Nevermind. It was big letdown. Weird letdown. Too bad they'll never go back to the disco-esque Oracular.
A 6 for me as well. Alien Days is my jam though. Convince me of this album. I'm just not seeing it. But I respect the band enough to hear both side (Anthony being on of them).
Rick Deckard Oh so you're one of those Oracular fanboys?
How dare you! I'm a purveyor of Congratulations. I was hoping beyond hope that they expanded upon that soundscape and went full blow acid rock. I'm hurt by your assumption.
Has anyone noticed the selly-ester watts field on this album?
