Bizarre Biofilm

  • On occasion I've seen this behavior arise with certain biofilms. Obviously it depends on the composition of the film in terms of which fats, proteins, etc. are involved. The yellowish films might originate with decaying plants or food pellets; I'm not sure which. They seem to form an elastic coating suspended over the water surface which can suddenly recoil when torn by supercritical shearing forces. Or perhaps I'm completely wrong and somehow electrostatic charge domains are forming on contiguous sections of the biofilm which experience localized polarization inversions that manifest as alterations in transparency. In any event, I have to wonder whether this property could be engineered for use in some sort of liquid optical sensor. Probably not. At least, it's entertaining.
