Great song, one of my favorites from The Byrds. In regards to your question about the performance, it looks like a it was on a television program similar to American Bandstand. The bands didn't usually play live, and their songs were played from a recording while young people danced. This was one of the ways the bands exposed their music to the public. I was a teenager at the time and loved watching these programs on Saturday mornings when I wasn't in school. So this one brought back memories.
Sweet! "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" is one of my favorite songs by The Byrds. I leaned into it a lot during the pandemic with the sentiment directed towards the orange faced scourge. Unfortunately, however, he returned like a horror movie monster risen from the grave. At any rate, they might have been lip-syncing the song, but I think the guy who put the clip together overdubbed the studio version onto the video. I found two clips of The Byrds performing the song in 1965 and while Gene Clark's singing is superb and the backing harmonies too, there are a few tells here and there setting the actual live versions apart. Music TV shows back then employed dancers as part of their presentation. They are generally referred to as "go-go dancers" and their boots, when they wore them, as "go-go boots". Those are the women dancing vigorously along the sides and in the back. The people on the dance floor in front of the band are part of the audience, although TV shows often paid pairs of professional dancers to join the crowd as well. When you're ready for more from The Byrds also check out "Mr. Tambourine Man", "Eight Miles High", and "Tulsa County".
1965, 60 years ago. I remember when it came out on the radio.
