Somewhere in Time - Picnic On The Carpet [HD]

- Elise (Jane Seymour) tells him that the first thing she will do for him is buy him a new suit, since the one he has been wearing is about 15 years out of date. Richard (Christopher Reeve) begins to show her how practical the suit is because of its many pockets. He is alarmed when he reaches into one and finds a Lincoln penny with a mint date of 1979.
Seeing an item from his real present wrenches him out of his hypnotically-induced time trip, and Richard feels himself rushing forward in time, with Elise screaming his name in horror as he is pulled inexorably out of 1912. - Фільми й анімація
That penny is about the most evil villain to ever be depicted in film
😂😂😂😂
Actually, Abe Lincoln is the evil villain here
His Superman reaction, The penny was kryptonite
@@djnoy842 haha
i thought who is Penny lol
First time I saw this I literally screamed "You idiot!" when he pulled that penny out. I know it was unintended, but truthfully I had gotten so caught up in their story together I had forgotten he had time-traveled back. Seeing that penny was a shock to me too. A very, very underrated film. And Ms. Seymour is simply gorgeous.
Dude! I would watch the movie again hoping that the plot would change! I would literally say to myself: "Please don't take out the penny this time," completely forgetting the movie is already filmed and set in stone....
Yeah, me too felt the same way when I saw this movie for the first time! I've even said during the scene in the present before he traveled back in time as he was trying to decide which pennies to put in his pockets, and which ones to put away in his closet I have literally screamed, "You idiot!" or "You're stupid!" then. I had also forgotten that he had traveled back in time. Because, I was so hunged up in their story as well. Ohhhh yes, I totally agree with you about Ms. Seymour. Back in 1980 she was simply gorgeous....just beautiful. Back then she was 29 years old, and Mr. Chris Reeve was 28 years old.
@@Blondie35 he was one good looking son of a gun himself. I bet half the women in the theatre were wishing they were the one in Jane's shoes in the scene where the characters have their first kiss, and later when they go to his room for some "alone time", to put it delicately
Her shrieking made what we didn't see, unbelievably freightning
Whenever I'm told the notebook is the most absolute best romance movie (and I have seen it) I immediately say it's not as good as somewhere in time.
I do too! Too much arguing in the Notebook.
Not even close!!
Honestly, I really didn't like "The Notebook".
True and Richard never pressured Elise In dating him, like Noah did to Allie, yes Richard loves Elise but he wanted to give her space.
The Notebook was a great film, but lacked the many facets this movie had.
Thus is why I never looked at a penny the same ever again
Hahahaha u r very funny..u made me laugh while crying in this episode.
😂😂😂
Jane Seymour in this scene is like the most beautiful woman ever.
Yes she is the most beautiful woman ever. This is my favorite scene of the movie
@@Blondie35 loo
@@lawrenceportela368 me too
Yes she's so beautiful but I can't bear to watch this scene because it's where they are torn apart forever 😢
No there are more strapping women than her. She has an imperfect looking nose.
This scene scared the absolute fuck out of me for some reason when I was a kid..
S. Edmondson Elise screams bloody murder in this scene. I could understand why it would've scared you.
Same
I’ve only just seen it for the first time and it has really creeped me out actually. Very well made.
Gives a new meaning to the phrase "... a penny for your thoughts..."
It also debunks the myth that finding a penny is "lucky"!
Imagine her witnessing this and everyone in the hotel thinking she’d gone insane upon hearing her screams. Nobody would believe her if she tried to tell anyone that she saw a man vanish right in front of her. Knowing he was from Chicago, she must’ve gone there in search of him only for them to have no record of anyone with his name. The pocket watch is the only concrete proof that he actually existed and she didn’t hallucinate the whole thing; no wonder she held onto it.
❤
I stayed like 3 days in shock when I saw this movie.
This scene breaks my heart.
Me too
It was hilarious
Goose bumps
The picnic on the floor is so romantic😊
Never fails to shock.
Such a perfect scene it gets you comfortable and just when you forget THE PENNY!
THIS IS BY FAR THE MOST ROMANTIC MOVIE EVER!
I watched this movie at age 12 and I cried very hard. This is probably the only movie that made me weep
What are some other tear jerkers? Sometimes I just want to watch a sad movie when I need to cry…
@@bwise2026 I'm not sure.. My taste and things that move me to tears can be very different. I cried on the movie Frozen as well as Furngully lol. I don't try to do it, it's just some moments trigger certain memories and emotions out of nowhere
When people say how "haunting" this film is, this scene always comes to mind. I first saw this as a child on cable tv in the early 80's and it kind of freaked me out, I'll never forget it. Little did I know at the time I would come to love this film more and more as I grew older and found out why the scene is so devastating.
That's why I keep all my pennies from 2050 safely locked in a deposit box. 😉
If we are left to ponder what Ms. McKenna actually witnessed, one really could see her withdrawal from any form of joy or happiness
I watched this movie in 1981. That was nearly 40 years ago. I was a young boy then.
I wonder what that looked like from her point of view. Like did he vanish into a hole? Or maybe flew backwards into a void. That had to be scary to watch.
***** You're right. The penny did come back to 1980.
+Manu77 She tells him in 1980 to come back to here so from her POV this has already happened. In 1980 she should have told him not to have anything in his pockets when he came back.
She gave him the watch in 1972, .but he didn't travel back in time until 1980
+John Waters get lost
+John Waters, -->Yeah and all that grease of yours has gone straight to your brains, if any (no matter if you are the one in the pic or not, the effect is the same alright!)

THEY MARRIED LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER AND DIED OLD
Well they reunited in heaven like Jack and Rose in Titanic.
Yep
gosh he is sooo handsome
Superman :)
I had such a crush on him when I was a kid. 🥰
i was a little kid when i first saw this movie because its one of my dads favorites, and this scene freaked me out soo badly! and then not to mention the crazy depression he goes into after that and when he dies. fuck man..
0:27 With those uttered words in the script, knowing what truly happened between them, and seeing the tears on the young Jane Seymour ... we see the meaning behind the saying “the show must go on”
Richard: "Note to self, next time don't check the pockets."
Or put change in your pocket from the year you're leaving.....
It’s too late
no next time spend more time checking the pockets! before before before
He clearly didn't think things through, she says "come back to me". It made him figure out how he could get there, but he failed to think about how he left her. surely it must have been something catastrophic that took him from her.
Yeah, why didn't he tell her he was a time traveler?
@@helenarichard Didn’t she say come back to her to him in the present
Its really that sudden presence of that bass fiddle and strings that complete the dramatic shock in this scene!
My favorite romance movie ever. I don’t get tired to see it over and over again 💞
Elise was so so distraught she went back in time and became Dr Quinn.
Ohhhhhhh snap!
Then explain Sully. If this scene is an indication of anything, I doubt she'd ever love again.
Plus moved her butt over to Smallville also..

Me too!
Greg Appelgren me too 😢
Pennies are usually made of copper... this one was made of kryptonite.
a damn penny took away his happy ending. I'm never carrying coins with me ever again
The most terrifying scene in the whole movie!
Imagine! having the one, that you love ripped from you! so brutally.
Even time, itself would lose it's meaning.
And your heart, would truly break.
A true, entrancing movie fo all age groups.
Many thanks.

From England.
The first time I watched that movie was by accident, I went to a theater intending to see another movie but they changed it on that day. I didn't imagine I was going to watch such beautiful romantic masterpiece. I don't remember what movie I intended to see that day anymore but I never forgot Somewhere in Time since then.
I came here because I have just read Paul Hyder's wonderful book, 'Tears in the Dark: Why the Movies Make Us Cry', which features this wonderful movie. Mr Hyder obviously sees Richard Collier as a man after his own heart when he writes: "What is important to note here is that Richard followed his instincts and travelled back into the past to pursue Elise. Many of us sitting in the audience would not have taken this risk but Richard did. He didn’t just talk the talk, he walked the walk. He did something truly amazing: He conquered time itself and in the process found love. This is something we would all like to do if we only had Richard’s courage and determination."
aaaaand my heart just shattered into a million pieces.
That must’ve been scary shit for Elise! 😱😭😭
One of the creppiest and most disturbing scenes ever.
+AN Feuerstahl Yes indeed!. Not only is she witnessing a terrible, fully abnormal and shocking event, but she's also watching the one she loves the most disappear before her very eyes in vain attempts to reach her! Could there be something more terrifying than that? Pure terror!! well matched with Seymour's impressive screams! pfff! And somehow I love the scene as it is, there's nothing that could be improved in any way, I think.
+Richard Magnus seems to be normal anymore.
Get goose bumps at that scene with the penny..
My birth mother used to put headphones on her stomach while she was pregnant with me, to play this soundtrack. To this day, I hear a heartbeat it the background.
Ah yes, because you remember not being born.
1) Screw that damned penny. 2) Jane's acting freaked me out here - if you examine it closely, it looks as if the very essence of life is being sucked from her...after that damned penny showed up.
Adds new meaning to the saying "a penny for your thoughts!"
The critics hated the movie but it really is special. It has everything l like in it. Time travel with a love story.
Very sad that the critics bad mouthed this movie, HOWEVER, it has stood the test of timr itself and is now a number one sought after winner.
I'm sure the only reason the critics REALLY bad-mouthed the movie was because it was super sad
They bad mouthed the book as well. Pricks. Both the film and novel are excellent stories.
It says all you need to know about critics.
Their performances was praised tho
Well that escalated rather quickly 😮
I may have to watch this movie.... there’s something pure/ innocent about this and the soft melody (song)drawing my curiosity !!!
NO !!!! I literally cannot BARE this part, its the reason I cannot watch this WONDERFUL movie in its completeness ever again !!!
o' my world. I'm in isolation at the moment and watching this and realizing that it was 20 years ago that i was in love like that. it didn't last, but lasted in my heart forever.
My gripe with this scene actually is Christopher’s response when she asked “you will marry me, won’t you?” With this almost nonchalant “sure”. It’s like, the dude’s been obsessing over a picture of the woman, found a way to wish himself back in time to make her fall in love with him, and when he finally accomplishes the feat, his response to her commitment of love, is “Sure”. It’s like, that’s it? That’s all you’re going to say? After all of that?😂
Such a wonderful fairy tale come true. Too long for a love so true and then she teases him and he feels wonderful and shows her that the suit ain't all that bad and it's got secret pockets and when he pulled that Penny out it's too much it brought tears to my eyes when he's reaching for her and she's screaming Richard Richard. It's so totally overwhelming and emotionally took me over. What a mega all-time favorite movie 🌠🌠🌠🌠👍
2:09 It was at this moment Richard knew, he f’d up!
Fucking penny.
1979
Every penny I get a penny I check the date!
They followed the script.
That was so sad When Ricard said special coin Department for emergenices.so sad.
In the blink of an eye, it all disappears
Jane Seymour is pure elegance.
Concuerdo, ademas de guapa.
"I WANT TO BE EVERYTHING TO YOU".....DO EVERYTHING FOR YOU ALWAYS.....
One of my favorite films, and soundtracks! Seymour is breathtakingly beautiful, Reeve blindly in love, and not to mention the controlling Christopher Plummer, " excess within control, McKenna"
😖UGH! Everytime Christopher Plummer uttered those very words, I cringed. The possessiveness & the control over her! He was so jealous that I just couldn't stand him throughout the film.🤦💜✌️
I was high on cough syrup night before i saw this movie and this scene freaked the shit out of me.... that shocking "Alertness" it hit my brain soooooo bad....
Very underrated movie.
This was a beautiful love story...

She should have said "come back to me.....without any coins"

Jane Seymour in 1978....wow. Just wow. Literally so beautiful it hurts.
caomhan84 I thought this was 1980?
I should've said 1979. They always film a movie a year before it comes out.
caomhan84 oh yeah true
Her acent is exquisite as well.
Well, she was a James Bond girl. She had to be hot to be one.
First I was like

Antone Capone Hahahahaha
I cry every time I see this !
Chills every time.
I've never met this girl, but I've had a few dreams and she's the same, when she gets close or I decide to finally talk to her, I wake up. I don't know who you are. But I'm here! Waiting for you ma'am!
Kate Winslet mentioned in an interview a few months back that she was offered to remake Somewhere in Time and she replied that she would love to only if Leo Dicaprio would play Richard. Hope it happens!
that would be sooo amazing i hope that happens!
I wish they would stop doing remakes! The remakes never can compare with the original. Just look at Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!
It would be great if they made the prequel/sequel “Memoirs Of Elise” into a movie.
I seriously doubt it'll ever get remade considering the film wasn't even that popular when it was released initially. Granted, the film gotten a cult following over the years, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be remade.
To be honest, i can't see Leonardo DiCaprio wanting to do this remake to be honest if it does happen. We have to keep in mind, he's an Oscar caliber actor now who's worked with a lot of the greats in Hollywood like Scorsese, Tarantino and Nolan that he's not going to want to do just any movie; particularly if that film isn't some kind of award contender, which "somewhere in time" wasn't even back in it's heyday. Not saying it's impossible for the remake to be one, but it just seems unlikely .
Henry cavill Will be better
😢😢😢 what a love story 🌹
She’s so cute. She’s so gorgeous. She talks a lot. She searing chicken off the bone in their pajamas ❤️
I love this movie so much!! ❤❤❤
Did Richard's body slowly fade and disappear into the air for this scene? It's a wonderful and very impressive plot.
I believe that's what happened! Richard turned into a ghostly apparition and faded away which must have terrified Elise so much, she screams in horror, confusion and loss!
Beautiful lovestory,good actors,i love this movie😊
They are both beautiful.
He is ugly. Nowadays women are everywhere as men are all homely. But every woman is sexy.

@@clocko2700 Yes, 'cause it's funny.
I can't bear to watch this scene because it's where they are torn apart forever 😢
That was actually the way they originally intended for the movie to end. They showed it to test audiences and the test audiences couldn't deal with it so they added the scene in heaven to give the audience a happy ending that they would be reunited.
My dad told me about this film and I almost had an emotional break down when he told me how it ended. It’s even worse because she probably had no idea why he went back to 1980 and even if she did and told him to remember to remove that’d god damn penny then he’d go old with her and he wouldn’t exist the future and that would mess a bunch of stuff up... why is this film so sad? 😭
Leila Ahmani He will exist in the future. It’s just that Elise has to tell his younger self in the future that he has to go back in time to meet her younger self in order to not screw up the space time continuum.
It is the lovely scene leading to the climax of one of my favorite romantic movie of all time 💙💟💒👌
If this story were true, just imagine the trauma Elise had to live through for the rest of her life. She would have suffered more grief and pain than Richard ever could have.
One probably needs to watch this film twice to pick up all of the dialogue. I bet he drops the penny as he slowly disappears and she finds it with the date 1979. Also remember when she asked him where he got his watch and he said somebody gave it to me. She probably then understood that he went back through time from at least 1979 and the penny looked new. And now she has his watch (somebody gave it to me). So she knew that she would see him again, but would have to wait her lifetime to see him. It's a good thing that she saw him disappear right in front of her rather than sometime earlier that day or another time when they were separated. Jane Seymour said that this was the most romantic movie she's ever done and one of her favorites.
And now that Chris is gone, it's also hard for her to watch this film, even tho this october 10th will mark 18 years since he passed away.
@@joaniekeyser4036 When Jane auditioned for the part, she was asked if she's ever been in love before and she said no. It was apparently a per-requisite for the part. Jane and Chris REALLY DID fall madly in love on the set and they considered marriage until Chris's ex-girlfriend told him she was pregnant with his child. So Chris and Jane decided to part as close friends and remained so until his death. So yes, you're probably right. I can only assume that she never watches the film any more.
@@golfhound she attends the annual Somewhere In Time Weekend when she can, so I'd bet she does every now and again even tho she said it was hard to do so since Chris passed. And apparently breaking things off with Jane in order to do right by Gae and his unborn child was the hardest thing Chris had ever had to do in his life, up until then at least. But Jane did name one of her sons for Chris, so there's that. And his Daughter named her firstborn son after him, too. And truth be told, had I a son, I'd give him Chris's first and middle name as tribute to a truly super man.
That damned penny was probably... Optional...should he decide to return to 1980....but he was so hooked that he clearly forgot about that one penny until it was too late

This scene is as big a gut punch and heartbreak in the novel as it was in the movie. Hollywood did its usual "we know best" arrogance by changing key aspects in Matheson's novel, like making the 1971 penny from 1979. The original date was 1896, not 1912. Richard has an altercation with Elise's nasty manager, Robinson, in the novel and tells him "you are meant to die in the North Atlantic!", because he'd read Robinson was aboard the Lusitania when it was sunk by a German U-boat. The location was Coronado, CA, not Mackinac Island, MI. This is my favorite non-action film of all, the music (John Barry) is heart rending, the story is beautiful and the ending is sad but with promise of eternity. Jane Seymour was the same age as Elise, 29, and drop dead gorgeous.
Elise McKenna was actually about 25 years old June 1912. Remember the meeting Collier and Robinson had at the gazebo behind the theater? Robinson saw McKenna at the age of 16 in March 1903 in that "pathetic play" so do the math. March 1903 to June 1912 that's about 9 years 16 + 9 is 25.
That’s what happens when you argue with a woman about clothes!
