  • Season Eleven has now drawn to a close and it’s time to take a fond look back at all of the movies we watched in 2023. Please enjoy the year in review, the new hall of fame inductees and the two shorts that we watch on the old leather couch: Sofia Coppola’s Lick the Star and Jacques Tati’s L’Ecole Des Facteurs (School for Postmen).
In Seen It, we discuss bands of boys, hotels for puppets and, for our final Seen It of the year, a Hitchcock masterpiece.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare is one of the most interesting takes on a horror film I've seen. It does fall apart in the third act, but it deserves a few slow claps for the creativity and innovative idea!

fan of this show for almost a decade now! my suggestion for the non-human category is "yawning": i feel like many characters and actors have yawned this year, and it fits with the theme of feeling underwhelmed by so many of the movies this year (although it is always enjoyable watching you two suffer through them)

I just watched all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies for a podcast. I had previously had a dim view of slasher movies, but Wes Craven's New Nightmare turned me around on the whole genre! I would highly recommend adding it to the list of potential future episodes.

I just went to your website to double check this, I am amazed that neither Music nor Singing are already hall of fame members. I would like to nominate either of those two for induction. While such an induction may seem strange on its surface, music has been tied to film since before the Jazz Singer, where the first lines ever spoken on film were to introduce a musical number. Even during the silent era, every theater still had a piano player to provide the score to the footage being shown. When sound became commonplace, musicals quickly became the bread and butter of Hollywood for decades, and that's still true today in both western animated films and Bollywood productions. Finally, film scores (or even the noticeable absence of scores) are just as important for a film as cinematography, writing, or acting for setting the mood of the scene. If you don't believe me, watch the scene of E.T. boarding his spaceship with the score removed.
In short, I say induct Music/Singing into the basement hall of fame. Dancing has been in for years and I say it's high time we give them something to move too!
EDIT: Welp, this is embarrassing. I noticed on the website that there wasn't a nonhuman category listed for last year so I just went to last year's final episode and it turns out it was in fact singing. I'm still gonna leave my comment up because I like the way it reads, and I do still think that Music/Film Scores should still be a viable candidate for induction

Whilst it lacks a full-year theming, it does seem only fitting for a lifetime achievement induction in the non-human category ro be offered to an action which has spanned the entire history of this show, defining cinematic moments of importance, of tension, of joy, if peril, and of extreme emotion, which have all been capitalized upon from the Old Leather Couch.
I therefore nominate for formal induction into the Welcome To The Basement Hall Of Fame, in the non-human category, the act of Bell Ringing. For we all must have a way proclaim to the world just how much we want our opera house.

Great selection this past year! I'm glad you finally got to mention The Manchurian Candidate (the original) in Seen It. My own nominee for the non-human Hall of Fame is the Colossus computer. Antecedent to SkyNet in the Terminator movies, the ultimate tribute to the morality tale that is Frankenstein, Colossus is chilling in its genius, its power, and its steel-trap logic, and its final speech is simply damning.

Might be a bit morbid, then again so am I, but my suggestion for non-human inductee would be... blood. It impacts so many films, not just horrors either, but in movies like Day of the Dead, Canninbal Holocaust, Sweeney Todd, and of course The Shining, it becomes a character of its own.

Wracking my brain to think of a non human hall of fame nominee. The first thing that came to mind was chaos, like the over the top madness in Jingle All the Way. But honestly I don't think that's a very good one. Better than chaos I would have to say Robots, or robits. Similar to the monsters inducted into the hall of fame, robots can account for many characters that have been in the show, I especially love the trope in certain movies of a mecha or robot monster in Godzilla Films.

Happy new year! Thank you for another entertaining season -- even when some of the movies themselves turn out to be disappointing.
I'm glad The Hound of the Baskervilles was one of your picks, I love Basil Rathbone in the role. I also continue to be impressed by how much Charlize Theron sells the action in Atomic Blonde. She sells the fights far better than most of the traditional action movie actors. The biggest surprise for me: Tumbling Tubleweeds was actually pretty entertaining.
I agree with you that it's hard to find fault with North by Northwest, but not impossible. I have two issues: casting an actress to play Cary Grant's mother who was only two years older than him, and no spotting the child extra covering his ears even BEFORE Eva Marie Saint pulls out a gun at Mount Rushmore.
Best wishes for a fantastic 2023!

But even the worst films like Stop or my Mom Will Shoot, In the Name of the King, Jingle All the Way and so many more have buried in them somewhere the grain of a good idea, a wasted good performance, a single good scene, or at the very, _very_ least, a Good Intention. Maybe now is the time to celebrate this one saving grace that we can reasonably assume all these films and their ilk have, because Lord knows they don’t have anything else going for them 😅

You should watch a play that's filmed like "Steambath" next season. You can discuss your thoughts on how film changes your prospective of the play performance. Also see "Virgin Suicides" I remember watching in as High Schooler and it felt the isolation and lost.
Hall Of Fame Suggestion is Practical Effects (classic non-CGI movie magic). Also like @Nevet1212 Robot suggestion.
