Making clay soup pot and sealing cracks with natural sealant

  • Clay is abundant here in the shallow earth. I used a gray colored clay to form a small pot and lid. After firing it I discovered that it had a small leak. I had read that soap plant can be used to seal pots so I dug up a bulb and tried it out. It worked!

    Thanks for this content, dunno why but it’s so calming to chill by the fires with you and watch you make things that remind me how lucky I am to have a nice pillow and bed, etc.
    keep it coming, I’ll gladly tune in.

    Very nice.
    It should glow bright orange for at least 15 mins in the fire and be allowed to stand until fire has burnt out and cooled to ensure a thorough baking.
    I learnt that if you burnish the inside before firing when nearly sun dry to a smooth surface, it will be waterproof, otherwise will be porous.

      Yes, I have since built a rocket stove and it burns really hot and works well to fire pottery. I have experienced with burnishing and yes it seems to make it more waterproof. Thanks for the tips!

    The waterproofing problem you're having with your pottery has a nifty fix to it. Shellac it with egg whites. Its the same technique ancient greeks used on all sorts of things that are still beautifully preserved, and usable thousands of years later. Just paint it in the egg white, all over, let it dry, and you should have yourself a nice water carrying bowl, regardless of any minor heating errors in the kiln. Not 100% sure, but its worth a try! Id say line them in melted beeswax, but I'm not sure if the wax would dissolve in the water. Might also be worth a try.
    On the subjects of fire and water, I'm curious, which techniques are you using for ignition? Purification? Or, are you cutting corners a little bit in this are (no one could blame you, its not like you said "I'm not using anything modern" in any video). Are there things about primitive living you have yet to learn, but would like to?

    Where do you source your water from? You might also want to consider waiting until the garbage trucks leave the area. The backup beepers kind of ruin the image you're trying to portray.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  6 років тому +14

      I fill containers with water and hike them in. There is no natural source nearby... Trust me, I have the hardest time shooting video here because of all the noise. Weekends is fine but my time is just so limited. I work seven days a week at a crap job while trying to get my business up to speed and do this for a little fun. They aren't garbage trucks but rather forklifts working at nearby businesses. The hut is on the top of a canyon and all the noise from the businesses down below just echoes right up the canyon.

    • @kevinfinkel5536
      @kevinfinkel5536 6 років тому +4

      Chad Zuber Ouch! I understand the crap job problem. Been there. Good luck getting the business you want up and running. Thanks for responding. Have you also considered using captions to describe what you're doing?

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  6 років тому +12

      Yes, I have thought of using captions but I decided against it since so many viewers are from countries where English isn't the first language. I try to show clearly what I'm doing. I am however considering setting up a blog page to describe everything in more detail with photos. I hope you enjoy the videos. Thanks for commenting. I always love the interactions.

    Hey man how do you know how to identify clay for pottery and ordinary dirt?

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  6 років тому +8

      Clay binds together well. Dirt will crumble. When you wet clay it becomes smooth and slippery. This hole provided me a lot of clay for a while but then ran out. I then found a more red clay in a different spot.

      One really good indication of clay is it will show your fingerprint if slightly pressed in.
