@@DevilTigermoth let's not overstate his input he was basically a voice on diary of a madman, Lee demoed the melody lines and vocals on several sings because ozzy. couldn't get the time changes. Ozzy has always con tributes melody lines, concepts and some lyrical ideas. But he's not a songwriter. Working with Randy allowed hon to contribute more since Randy was willing to write chord structures under Ozzy humming stuff, whereas Tony would t do that. I think Ozzy's dad suggested blizzard of ozz and ye actually did form the band with guys from a band who opened for Sabbath but it was short lived.

the bark album has not aged well. saying ozzy didnt write any of it isn't exactly an insult ... lol. anyway that is just personal taste i guess, but ozzys voice is instantly recognisable. his delivery and candence were absolutely necessary for sabbaths success.
we all know who played what but without ozzy you would know who half these people are.

One correction here is that Don saying he and Ed both had children during the summer of '88 on the U.S. Monsters of Rock tour. Ed & Valerie's only child Wolfgang was born in early '91. I saw Don here in Cleveland in November of '90 as he toured the excellent 'Up From The Ashes' record and he and the band were excellent. John Norum & Billy White were incredible live guitarists. Baltes on bass & Dee on drums were quite good as well. Don's a very fine vocalist with a unique vocal sound. I have the 'Dysfunctional' record and enjoy parts of it.

Surpassed only by the couple walking in shirtless, California tan with matching stonewashed ripped jeans, her white leather halter top, matching white leather dog collars, identical bleach blond spiked mullet haircuts, both overweight by about 30 pounds rolling over top of the jeans, both holding beers in each hand as we all leaned the heck out of the way so they didn't spill on us getting to their seats. George is a great artist but to ignore Don's talent, passion and vision is unfair. Honestly, when I saw them at Monsters of Rock with Van Hagar, Scorpions, etc they were the weakest band of the day by far, they did not project well, I couldn't tell you why---- but their records at the time were great and they made their mark, and one thing for sure, DON is the only member you could never replace....... that tells you something right there.... also he's a super classy, humble, funny guy that stuck to his craft when the hair metal scene went off a cliff and he continued to make good music and represent and devote his life to real music as apposed to all the soulless synthetic garbage out there.

And the other day I was watching a guitar mixup of "The 79 Boys", which was someone, who made a video on UA-cam, probably a guitarist. But, he only had three guitarists material in this mix. To make it short, it was Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, and George Lynch. Now it's obvious who went down as the ultimate god out of the three. And when Randy first saw for himself Eddie play, he became a fan a yes , he borrowed the finger tap that Eddie made famous, along with a couple other things. As a matter of fact all guitarists we're. But, when you're making a mix of the three best guitarists, obviously in your opinion in the year 1979, this guy needed to hold up and definitely pump his brakes. As Eddie had just broke thru with the first Van Halen album, and he lit that torch that got guitarists more into it, more interested, and everyone wanted to be able to play like him, nobody could. And this isn't a knock on Randy Rhodes, because Randy was an extremely young and talented guitarist, who stated that Eddie was one of his favorites when it comes to playing guitar. Now this is coming from a kid who started playing guitar at like nine years old. He was teaching guitar and music before joining the Ozzy band. I mean he knew the guitar through and through. Idk how old he was exactly when he joined Ozzy, possibly 19 or 20. So he was already teaching intense guitar playing and reading and writing music. And due to the fact he had passed away in a fatal plane accident, we will never know what was to be from Randy. But, from looking at his career until his death, you would know that his knowledge, and the way he could play music at only the age he was, was something else and had he been alive since, he would without any doubt in my mind be one of the best. Maybe not as good as Eddie, but as close as you would ever get to as good as Eddie. So, sorry I have sidetracked a bit. The point of the story is that George Lynch, the guitarist for Dokken, was a great guitarist. Any way you slice it the guy could play, and he had some real shredding solos on them Dokken albums. My only problem is this. And this is imo, so I hope nobody gets all bent, and forget imo, this is a fact. Whoever can't recognize this fact needs to get their ears checked out. Eddie was the best because he was an innovator with the guitar, from the tapping, to his own style, to inventing new ways of taking the electric guitar itself apart, and rebuilding it so the guitar could be louder as he wanted, may be give it a new sound he wanted, but the guy was constantly fucking with guitars and taking them apart, even building tools he would invent for others guitarists that would hold the guitar straight up as you would work on it. So this was next level, ahead of all these other guys type of shit. And Randy Rhodes was just a guitarist's guitarist. He started playing at a very young age, so I'm sure he was easily reading and writing his own music at the age of 14 or 15. And even at that age, I'm sure he could blow your mind. Ntm sure he did borrow from Eddie, was a fan, and was a bit blown away by his playing. So sure Eddie was the man. He was the man that a very special super talented Randy Rhodes had looked up to. Sure when the first 2 Van Halen albums came out, or just the first, and the world was exposed to Eddie Van Halen, that was it, a new rock god had been born with their first album and tour. Then when Ozzy split from Sabbath and needed a lead guitarist for his new solo band, he had Randy audition for about five minutes or so, just Randy, his guitar and a little amp. He was hired in five minutes with that small plug in amp, and no auditions with the band. And mind you, all the best guitarists we're obviously auditioning for Ozzy's solo band. He was already a big name, this man was the front man for Black Sabbath, the original Black Sabbath! Some would say they were the founders of heavy metal or heavy rock, and the albums they had made with Ozzy were all very well received, he was their original voice, but know it was a new era. And Ozzy Osbourne was a solo act with only the best talent playing instruments on records and concerts for him. Almost like a super group, and a young Randy Rhodes was hired after Ozzy hearing him play on a tiny plug in amp. Then Ozzy Osbourne and his band recorded their first album with Randy Rhodes I think that it may have come out in 1980,or a year before. But the album was titled The Blizzard of Oz, and the world was definitely then introduced to Randy Rhodes. And as we could tell on the album, this guy was writing the music and songs, and his playing on that album, with such great hits, I believe put him definitely in the company of Eddie Van Halen, especially his concert solos, they were unbelievable and just simply put, great. This didn't put him on EVHs level, but ppl were putting him on his own level nonetheless, and it wasn't to far lower than Eddie. Imo, I really loved Randy's playing, and the Ozzy/Randy Tribute album, it's all there. Ozzy had made us fans a special treat when he put out that Tribute album to Randy Rhodes because it was all live and if we had been too young or wasn't able to see and hear Randy play live, this album was just the perfect gift, also the perfect idea for those who had already been there, seen, heard, and loved Randy. And I remember, on the album, there's a drum solo and Randy's guitar solo, which I listened to do much when it came out on tape I know it came after Suicide Solution, I wore the tape to nothing and I'm not big on live albums. But, this was like a capsule frozen in time, of Randy Rhodes. And Fuck yeah! He was that damn good! Now(sorry so long), I am watching this guy's UA-cam video basically telling me that that George Lynch was on the same level as EVH, and Randy Rhodes. I had to comment on that, because beyond EVH and Randy Rhodes, I could think of a list of better guitarists than Lynch, and again I apologize. But Angus Young, Malmsteen, Joe Perry, Jimmy Page, I mean you get the picture right? Jake E Lee, Joe Satriani, Vinny Vincent, Ritchie Blackmore, and as he started making a few records with Dokken, which were pretty dam good themselves. I just didn't hear what came close to the playing on an album that EVH or even Randy Rhodes was on. Their fill ins and riffs we're fire. And imo Dokken had some good music, but the only album they put out that I thought was their best, meaning I could listen to their whole album was 1987s Back For the Attack. They even had that awesome song they made for the third Nightmare on Elm Street movie called Dream Warriors. The same being said, sure Richard Lynch was a great guitarist, and his guitar mixed with Don Dokken's phenomenal voice was definitely a perfect sound, I'm sure they made a lot of money off them albums, and we're great in concert. I'm sure as any guitar player from that time his solos were great, and his solos in Dokken's albums were great. But you can't ever in a million miles put him on the same level as Eddie Van Halen. And also that being the case, he wasn't even close to as good as Randy Rhodes. And like I said, I have a list of lead guitarists in that 1979 era and after that period that were much better than Richard Lynch. And when he disbanded from Dokken and made his own solo act Lynch Mob. Well they had some good players. And once again yes, Lynch can play. But, his solo work didn't even come close to his success with Dokken. I wasn't a fan of Lynch Mob, I know they tried to give them some airplay with a song or two that their label thought were hits. At that time I thought they sounded like every other band coming out at that time trying to capitalize on the right leather pants, long hair, and appearance. They could play, but they had no stand out hits imo. And they were more boring than bands like Skid Row, Guns and Roses, and White snake, or even White Lion. At least then bands had some if not lots of different and catchy songs, great guitars as well, and we're much more exciting. So after all that long ass bullshit that I wrote in this comment. Someone please tell me this simple question because I sure as fuck can't answer it. How can you even think of mentioning Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhodes in a somewhat best guitarists of that particular time, and then go and throw in Richard fucking Lynch in the same conversation as them two guitarists!? I would've probably even put Angus Young in that conversation possibly, but definitely before Richard Lynch!! WTF!? The only thing he's competed and beaten EVH or Randy Rhodes is not guitar, not even near a close to the lesser of the two. The only thing he's accomplished that EVH and Randy Rhodes couldn't accomplish is that he's still with us. To this day Lynch hasn't come close to being anywhere near or even slightly close to playing as good as either. He's never sold as many records or made better music than either, and that says a lot for Randy Rhodes, as we really didn't have him for long, but in about a three to four year time of his life, he's made much better music, albums and is still more relevant and recognized than Lynch. And as far as things go with the man himself Mr Eddie Van Halen. Well he's probably the most recognizable guitarist or even member of a band to this day, and probably for eternity to come. So why did this guy claim that these three guitarists we're on the same level in the year 1979? It's the absolute most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

The irony about successful bands, just like marriages, are that they form and really make it big on what each person brings to the group.. but usually they break up because of the exact same reason. Regardless of whatever happened, my coffin’s cd collection will definitely be including Dokken.

Successful bands would go and hang out on the Sunset Strip, that is what bands did. David Lee Roth was doing blow with Motley Crue at their famous apartment just up the street from the Whiskey before they were famous. What I have read is that there is a bootleg from Randy's farewell show where Kevin DuBrow thanks the guys in Van Halen for coming to the show (as VIPs, not performers). Give the guy a break, he may misremember things but they can also be close to true. '79 was 42 years ago! This guy has been around the world, big tours, drugs and parties!
