I am a huge NIN fan and had absolutely no idea this was a cover. Loving this version, actually picked up this on vinyl the other day. Definitely needs a spin.

I agree, totally. But very important to mention is to listen to the Decca-version (1977), not the re-recorded one as the b-side of Goody Two Shoes (1982).
That 'new' version is great, but 'just' a great rocksong, while the old one 's got indeed that mean and filthy atmosphere.

Thoroughly enjoyed this original, but NIN's cover gave it the harder edge that it needs and took it to another level.
Im sure in each respective time period they were absolutely crushing. I never heard this version as a kid but did the NIN version as a young adult and think it was one of the heaviest songs NIN ever did.
I used to blast this on my Walkman til my ears bled. Imagine my delight when I stumbled onto track 98 on Broken. I blast them back to back in my car now on my way back from rehearsal, singing in a classical choir.

This is what NIN covered. Adam And The Ants did two version of this song, the first one was relased in 1979. Imo the very best one is livevideo taken in Manchester, much better than NIN's.

I dunno, Killer in the Home, Press Darlings, and Ants Invasion is pretty damn heavy too, and they're on the same album.

I read an article where he said after seeing the very physical reaction of some girls at a TRex concert, he wanted to have that effect on girls when he was on stage! Mission accomplished! But it seems the entire audience wanted him after seeing his performance! It's also his Jim Morrison tribute.

Adam Ant performing live during the first 2 years this band was out was on par with Jim Morrison when it came to intensity and audience control. Don't fight me - I was there. I saw it. It was a moment in time that is incredibly hard to describe. He was a destroyer and you couldn't take your eyes off him.

I believe you. I saw Adam and The Ants play an 80's festival like 12 years ago and they blew everyone else out of the water. I think I fell asleep after he preformed.
I don't really have a preference tbh. Both NIN and this are good. But also you gotta appreciate how ahead of it's time this is, I can't of anything this heavy and noisey coming out of "mainstream" punk/new wave at the time, maybe iggy pop

I think everyone who's heard the Nine Inch Nails cover is eventually making it over here to listen to the original version. I knew Adam and The Ants had their roots in punk but haven't heard this track of theirs on any of the compilations I have. I totally get where the NIN version is coming from now. Beguiling versions both of them...
Right now there are people arguing over which version of “Hurt” is better on both of those youtube videos instead of celebrating the fact that we now have two versions of great songs. It’s not about that damn. I love it when great artists can put a different perspective or atmosphere on another great artist’s work.
Trent Reznor said about Johnny Cash redoing "Hurt" was like Johnny stealing Trent's girlfriend and Trent understanding. Trent also said "It isn't my song anymore".

The first time I heard NIN - Broken, I was at a friends house, reading the insert while listening, and I saw Adam Ant credited for this song and I thought "holy shit, Adam Ant produced this track?!" I hadn't heard the song before, but I knew of his more popular tracks and music videos, and my friend had no idea what I was talking about; I felt privileged at that moment.
I'm getting some Bowie vibes on this one.. from the opening chord (reminiscent to me of the opening of "The Width of a Circle") to the way he sings "physical".

I saw the writing credit going to Adam Ant when I bought the Broken EP ages ago, but never got around to looking up the original until today. I heard the Pigface version of Suck before the NIN version, and the difference was so vast between the two, I assumed the original version of Physical would be just as different, but it's almost the same arrangement (aside from the goofy-ass vocals).
For the record, I like the Pigface version better (from their first album), but I definitely prefer the NIN version of this song.

@@TheIanoTube Well he hid the song so he wouldn't have to pay royalties. tried to refined the video there Adam talks about it. And if you are the type of person who doesn't think that royalties shouldn't be paid for singing someone's else's art then you have a bigger problem.
