  • DARKNESS IN GERMANY: Industry sounds the alarm! Electricity prices bring production to its knees
High electricity prices in Germany are forcing energy-intensive companies such as a steelworks in Riesa to take drastic measures. Due to the so-called dark doldrums, during which little renewable energy is available, electricity prices have at times risen to up to 1 euro per kilowatt hour. For the plant, which buys electricity on the exchange on a daily basis, this meant that production was temporarily halted: Production was temporarily halted to avoid losses.
This example shows how severely energy-intensive industries are affected by high energy costs. This is particularly problematic for the steel industry, which is already struggling with international competition and losses. While the switch to green technologies such as hydrogen production offers prospects for the future, the current situation continues to threaten the existence of many companies.
