Thanks Piet, finally someone on UA-cam has featured the great efforts of their cows, just need someone to film when the classifier visits their farm. Cheers 🇦🇺
Brilliant display of how dairy farming should be . The pride you obviously have shone mate. I was going to comment that it would have been good to know sires😇
Boy or boy, those cows in the bed pack are extremely comfortable. Really looks like a cow preferred way to be housed. Do you keep some lactating cows on Bed pack? To you have more or less stepped on teats on the bed pack?
We don't have any milking cows on bed pack. The bed pack is nice for calving cows, but I definitely prefer sand bedded freestalls for cow comfort and under health.
It would be interesting how these high producers offspring are doing. Being that old, there could be several generations and how their offspring are doing.
I'd like to look at this and talk about it in a future video! I'm interested myself to see how many daughters and granddaughters of these cows are in our herd.
Why do you have different setups for your cows? For example one of the cows that you showed with the red on they had open bedding but then you showed cows at 6 minutes 32 seconds in that had the stations that they sleep in. I don't know what they're called. Just curious.
Hi Piet How many times are you milking the cows per day? Your farm, stables and all is looking so good. Very clean and your cows are also looking healthy. How many lactations can your cows go through in their lifetime?
We are milking our cows 3 times per day. Our average lactation currently is just under 3, we've had a few 10 lactation cows over the years but that doesn't happen very often.
When I was younger I used to drink alot of milk. But at some point in my life I became lactose intolerent and don't dare eat ice cream, drink milk, or eat beef fat. Cheese is alright, I don't know why, but it is.
The industry has been following this philosphy of raising fewer heifers for a few years now and suddenly there is a shortage of replacements. Maybe a time for reassessment. Maybe these crossbred calves are not as profitable in the long run.
Even with today's high heifer prices it still makes more financial sense to breed to beef. I want to focus on doing a good job raising a smaller number of heifers for our farm. We've been using this strategy for 5+ years and I'm not currently looking to change to raising extra heifers to sell.
We process a small portion of our own milk at Cows & Co Creamery. You can ship gelato and gouda cheese from our creamery directly to your home on cowsandcocreamery.com
I'm gonna guess those lifetime cows are bred beef because the experts say here genetics aren't good enough to make replacements. Those are the type of cows that should be making daughters common sense wise.
This is interesting thought, while they may be bred to beef now they should have their genetics being passed on in the herd. I'll have to look at these cows a little closer and see how many daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughters are in our herd and how they rank amongst their age groups genetics wise.
What's the number of cows where it goes from small family farm to not? Seven of us make a living directly from our farm and creamery and there will be an opportunity for our kids to join as well if they choose to. That would never be possible on a 100 cow dairy farm.
@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 the biggest threat to small dairy farmers is the problem with retailers and processors not passing on a fair share of the money to farmers. Speaking as a UK farmer those factors plus onerous red tape, new slurry/ manure storage and spreading regulations and the long term investment needed for this is driving farmers out ot business in their droves. Even the large farmers are struggling to make it pay.
@richardlewis1539 I don't disagree with you, it seems many processors in the midwest are preferring to accommodate new farms milking over 3000 cows instead of sourcing milk from many smaller farms.
We are using only sorted semen and beef semen, no conventional holstein semen. The sorted semen is targeted towards our highest genetic cows and heifers.

That's 1st class luxury where those cows are laying down ! They are so contented ! Well cared for !
I’ve never seen Cows lay like that without moving while walking through them their the most content I’ve ever seen 🎉🎉
Such wonderful words about cows in this episode, you are a real ambassador for the dairy industry.
Thanks for the video The cows are super relaxed Your employees must be calm with them. Good job team members!
Thanks Piet, finally someone on UA-cam has featured the great efforts of their cows, just need someone to film when the classifier visits their farm. Cheers 🇦🇺
We are not physically classifying our cows. Our breeding strategy is based on genetic testing. I can talk about this in a future video!
You are doing great job with your cattle 😊
Thank you!
Great video... your care for the cows shows through!
Thank you!
Great vieo. So informative. Cows loook very happy. Keep up the good work.
Nice looking herd.
Would be interesting if you had named their sires . A very good video Piet.
I will talk about specific sires and our genetics in a future video!
Great video nice job on the older cows
Thank you!
Brilliant display of how dairy farming should be . The pride you obviously have shone mate. I was going to comment that it would have been good to know sires😇
That's incredible to see how the cows thrive
Excellent uddered cows!! Good job.
Thank you!
Would like to hear you talk more about the breeding of the cows. Cheers 🇦🇺
I can do that in future videos.
You should make videos on detailed feed plans per group.
GOOD MORNING GREAT VIDEO
Thank you!
great job people need meat and milk them tree huggers can eat the grass after they mow it some pleople are knot heads thanks for your service
Hi Piet.what are your favorite bulls? What company?
I can't say I have any favorite bulls specifically. We are using NXGEN bulls from select sires.
Hi Piet! Don't see any auto cow brushes, in your barns, or maybe I'm just missing them? I do know cows love them 😊
I'm not against cow brushes, but they seem to have a lot of mechanical problems. I'd like to try some new models and see how they hold up.
@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 anyway cows look beautiful!! Great work. And thanks 4 the feedback 😀

Great cows
Did you ever use Jersey bull?
Thank you! No, we haven't used any jersey bulls here.
Why do you have different setups for your cows? For example one of the cows that you showed with the red on they had open bedding but then you showed cows at 6 minutes 32 seconds in that had the stations that they sleep in. I don't know what they're called. Just curious.
Hi Piet

We are milking our cows 3 times per day. Our average lactation currently is just under 3, we've had a few 10 lactation cows over the years but that doesn't happen very often.
How many hours does it take to milk each time?
@@carstenpedersen8808 about 6.5 to 7 hours, we're milking about 20 hours per day
Do you raise beef steers in your barn?
We raise enough steers to provide meat for ourselves and to sell at cows and co, the majority of our beef calves are sold.
When I was younger I used to drink alot of milk. But at some point in my life I became lactose intolerent and don't dare eat ice cream, drink milk, or eat beef fat. Cheese is alright, I don't know why, but it is.
At least you can still enjoy cheese!
Do the three highest producing cows offspring show the same traits for production?
This is something I want to look at a little closer. I'm interested myself in how many daughters and granddaughters these cows have in the herd.

Hello piet
Hi

Hello, fo you participate in competitions or embryo sales on your best cows? Thank
We do not.
The industry has been following this philosphy of raising fewer heifers for a few years now and suddenly there is a shortage of replacements. Maybe a time for reassessment. Maybe these crossbred calves are not as profitable in the long run.

Nice Udders!! high and tight
I’d love to see those few super cows in some better light and a proper walk around them, their heads all look the same😂Any Ex cows?
@@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 excellent 90 plus, if you have any pedigree cows classified
Classification of registered cows. EX is classified 90 points and above. EX means Excellent
@Rich-kx4qm we're not classifying our cows, we're making breeding decisions based off of genomic tests.
I don’t see why you don’t have a micro processing store. Sell you own brand,
We process a small portion of our own milk at Cows & Co Creamery. You can ship gelato and gouda cheese from our creamery directly to your home on cowsandcocreamery.com
