- The responsible for the recent auroras seen all over the world was the huge sunspot AR3664, with more than fifteen times the diameter of the Earth. But the Carrington Event in 1859 was much stronger. We're now getting close to the solar cycle maximum, which is when we hit a peak of sunspots on the Sun's surface. So what will happen if a storm like the Carrington Event occurs today? Will we become without the internet? And what are the chances for it to happen, now that we are reaching the maximum of solar activity? What should you do then?

The Earth's magnetic field is 30% weaker now then in 1859 (per NASA and ESA missions). If a Carrington level event were to happen today, it's lights (and everything else) out - permanently. You wont have to worry about the internet, or anything else but survival. Good luck to those unfortunate enough to live in the cities. You'll need it.

They shut down to lower the power. It takes between 1 to 4 days after the CME leave the Sun

I agree, having a halt on our internet for a few days, is not something to panic. We would get back into normality really quick, we just need to work and put our minds and hearts into it to just, do stuff, work, without panicking or worrying about money that didnt even existed in the first place. Work together until we recuperate, we would come out even better as a people after such event.
