  • We set up a Q&A livestream in front of three self-driving vehicles parked inside a bright warehouse type of garage. This is how we made it look a little more sophisticated.
    Here’s a link to the stream. The Q&A starts at 38:52

    Looks great, love how the vehicles fade off to black.

    I'd say the lighting on the LIDAR units was perfect. I had definitely read the company's logos, but until you commented on specifically lighting the LIDAR boxes, I wasn't distinctly aware of them, except that the vehicles looked like cars rigged for self-driving development. I'm sure that the content of what the participants were talking about would hit on their tech, and they read just right - clear to see when you look for it, but not "hitting you over the head." Great to see a large, somewhat complex setup like this. Thanks!

    I did one commercial shoot for cars once, and I nearly went insane from the reflections and hot spots. You made yours look quite eloquent. We spent nearly 3 hours lighting (I shit you not) the wheels after we armor-all'ed them, because the client wanted shiny wheels. Then changed their mind and wanted matte.

      It can become a specialty, for sure. It’s like taking traditional table top product lighting and scaling it... but you don’t always get the budget to scale with it😬

    Nice build, I've just brought some of the modern truss builders ,had 3x S60 on them the other day, saved hiring in box truss and took up much less room on set.Plus have just brought Apture 300x and spotlight mount, great for this kind of shoot. Astera tubes super useful in shot.

    Hi Luke, more great rigging on display. You feel it was necessary to hang the key from the top chord of your truss? You wanted the extra clearance, or the structural support?

      We had to keep the Bottom of the lantern out of the wide shot, so rigging to the top bar gave us a few more inches of height.

    Two questions for you Luke. What tripod did you use for the ladder truss? Im thinking of getting a tripod with a hand crank. Also, I did like how you added the black backgrounds using only one tripod. Im curios what gear is holding the ”T-bar” and how long pipe you were using. You really put on a decent size backdrop on a single tripod!

      The stands on either end of the truss are Matthews panel stands. They aren’t inexpensive and their load capacity is not as high as one might want, but they have a great footprint, are easy to use, and fit the size of production that I usually do. I use them for Skypanels, menace arms, and goal posts. The 12x12 solid it T-barred on a three riser hi-hi roller from American Grip. The T-bar is a 12 ft stick of 1-1/4” speed rail attached to the stand with an ear.
      The piece of kit that is custom are the ladder truss ears. The laser truss comes in a reduced size as well.

      Would love to see more of those on your breakdowns if possible?

      Sounds like a plan. I have been doing them more regularly lately so shouldn’t be a problem.

    Hey Luke! Where do you guys get those ladder truss mounting brackets so the ladder is oriented vertically? All I can find are Modern's ladder truss ears but they orient the truss horizontally. Seen these vertical mounting brackets in a few of your videos. Thanks!

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  Рік тому

      It was a custom ask from Modern. You’d have to see if they are still open to it. 😬

    Hey Luke, great video! How did you add the bend to the ladder truss?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  4 роки тому

      I forgot to videotape it. Mike Booth, the Key, had two of us hold either end of the truss with the center resting on two full apples. The connectors holding the bottom pipes together were tightened. Then he asked us to push down on both ends, causing a bend. As we held down the truss, he tightens the top row of connectors. It’s sort of like a suspension bridge in that it flattens out with more weight. Hope that helps.

    Where did you get your ladder truss ears? Are those a custom Modern Studio piece?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  4 роки тому

      They are custom. A number of people have asked. If they heard there was a group order there may be more incentive, as they have backed away from random custom work.

    Where did you get the vertically stacked ladder truss ears?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  Рік тому

      That was a custom request through Modern Studio Equipment.
