In revenge, usually, there isn't any room for true morality. I don't think that is poor writing at all, it is very human to lie... while lying is wrong, everyone lies. For instance, if someone asks for the time and it is 12:47, but you say 12:45 rounding it off, that's a lie too. It all just depends on how far you want to take it and how strict do you want to be with it. Then morality is subjective. So according to herself, the FL did the right thing as she has to reach her goal and cannot let herself die before that. That's her moral argument. Courtiers lie repeatedly, the FL already knew she was going to appear before the Empress as it was all planned. None of it was impromptu. If a commoner lied on the spot maybe that could be considered exceptionalism, but it is someone bent on climbing the ladder to get her revenge and precisely planned by spreading rumours to appear before the Empress, knowing she'll have to perform her trick in front her so she studied the magistrate beforehand... that's hardly exceptionalism nor bad writing.

If she could have said the real truth of the dream, do you think Minister Yuan will be alive? It's a win-win situation. She needed Minster Yuan for her investigation for 1 day to prove her innocent tho her got the potential but still needed others. ✌️✌️
