Butterfly Garden ~ Original Song by VIA

I hope that everyone had a lovely Father’s Day yesterday.
This song is one that I wrote in honor of my late grandfather who I unfortunately did not have the pleasure to know, as he passed from cancer when I was only a few years old. My mother had her own battle with cancer years ago, and I am so grateful to still have her with me today. This song is the way I was able to process the fear of losing my mother and it begins from the perspective of my grandfather in the first half, but shifts to my mother’s perspective in the second verse. The butterfly she speaks to is the spirit of her father, who used to say he would return as a butterfly and that she could talk to him anytime and he would find a way to guide her. She asks him if her time is up, and he tells her “Not yet, but I promise one day we will be reunited in my garden.”
When I was 16, I had a transformative experience at Camp Kesem, a camp for children whose families have been affected by cancer. Meeting other children who had already lost parents, or whose parents were still battling it, brought me a humbling realization and so much gratitude to still have my mother here. This song was born shortly after returning home from camp. I remember deciding that I would one day be a counselor when I got to college. Unfortunately, my university does not have a Kesem chapter; however, I am looking into starting one as my Honors Capstone project this year. I hope that I can get the initiative moving before I graduate this spring. At the very least, I hope that my music can be a message of hope and enduring love, forces I believe will always transcend death.
