What’s unspoken here is your generosity, which also reflects your belief in your own abilities. Put another way, you’re not worried that you’ll be putting yourself out of work by sharing your skill. That’s a great way to be, and obviously it’s working. Your energy and positivity come across in your videos. Thanks for sharing that! I come here to pick up tips for my own mixing as a composer for tv and film, and I find some really interesting parallels with working with clients and whatnot. I’m gonna keep your perspective about revisions in mind!

Remember to set aside 20% from your quarterly earnings for taxes. As an independent contractor this is very important. Nobody wants the IRS on their back.

Folks watching your content are mixing/mastering themselves. So ... those are no clients.
However, ... I'm taking note of what your sharing and that you are a resource available for solid deliverables.
    Good videos!

  • @WheelieMix
    @WheelieMix 4 місяці тому

Wheeliemix here :). I took ages to answer sorry, thanks for highlighting my channel in there, I am chiming in as I wanna share why I would NOT advise people to do what I do on Instagram for career purposes (hehe), it's a bit long but I hope worth the read :
    - Some people can think that you do that because you have nothing better to do/show. Actually you semi-implied this in your video : "What if you don't have a release coming out every day, show what you do in the studio (...) and that's something to do to get yourself out there".
My type of content, subtly implied to you that I am not "out there" yet. And that is totally understandable and also my "fault".
Because I don't do name-drop on my page, I also was (and still am) too lazy to do a proper website, and I don't usually post releases I've worked on (or very rarely, most often in my stories though). Although I have some hefty name dropping I could show (more about that later) and I have releases I've worked on coming very often (sometimes I can't keep up with them and struggle to gather credits).
    - Industry people don't really like it most of the time. Most of them either don't care at all or don't like it. Because it puts you in the category of "Those who can't, teach". And also puts in the category of "Those who show too much, hide emptiness". Both are not true but understandable. For me, it is a "risk" I am willing to take.
Now both of these "cons" are pretty negative. But I decided to go with them because :
I know what I should do to be a "cool" audio engineer on Insta. Post album artwork of stuff I've worked on. With very minimum info and emotion showed, classic "Prod by xx, Mixed by yours truly, mastered by xx, label : xx" and almost no hastags. Almost no opinion expressed. And sometimes, occasionally posting a picture of a Chai Tea that costed me 11£ because there is "S*ck my Chai" written on it and it was served by a dude or dudette with 10 tatoos per arm.
I know that, I see it everywhere, I am not blind, but that's not me.
I hate social media. To my very core. I would love for them to magically disappear. But they won't, it's a fact. And in the music industry they are either a big help or a burden. So I decided to grab the bull by the horns and dive into them. Although, to one simple condition : If I am not bringing a smidge of value to people watching my content, I'll quit.
Showing my work without explaining what I did, to me shows little to no value to anybody, and would transform my Instagram into an artsy Linkedin account (and I hate LinkendIn too hehe). So I decided to show what I did, show what inspired me, and show new ideas and concepts just to strike a tiny bit of inspiration to maybe 1 person out there. Because let's be honest, there is no reason to have 10000 ways to mix a bass guitar. But it's always fun to experiment and try new things even if they would very likely yield the same result as what we did before.
So all in all, I'd not advise people to do what I do on a career standpoint. Because I am not doing it for my career.
Actually, I am thinking about quitting audio pretty soon (not sure yet) because I've done all that I wanted to do. I've worked with almost all the artists I wanted to work with. It took me 4 years to be a studio manager with an SSL 4048G+ and to live onsite, in a great flat, in London, while dealing (almost) everyday with big labels and majors.
In terms of name dropping, I have been covered right away in my first year of career. And it's not the name dropping like "I've worked with Lil Djeebah and The Tentrics Theorem, what you don't know them??". My first name drop were, among others Mick Jagger, Nicki Minaj and Will.I.Am (and I don't brag, I absolutely don't care, for the simple reason that I am not Mick Jagger I've worked with him, but janitors probably worked with him too, nothing special in there).
So I am really now sorely on Instagram for maybe inspiring people to create and have fun with music before AI will make it overly formulaic.
Not for my career, at least not anymore. Did it helped my career? Yes it did. But I never tried to push my account by doing what's trending or what I should do. I just do it until I won't.
Thanks for the highlights, highly appreciated :D!

Great video, love your channel man. Two things that help me are using an invoice system (in my case wave) and an app for sending previews (in my case samply). Invoicing apps can help you keep track of income and taxes, and samply simplifies the approval process like none other, not to mention adds a better experience for the artist and allows for gapless playback. Anyways, keep up the good work!

It ain’t easy. It takes time…..a lot of time. Most will give it up
The some who keep grinding over 10 years will make it.
Even if you think/know you do better work then the busy guy doesn’t mean that dude is making(enough) money or not using multiple sources of income to pay the bills.
Do not always believe what you see
The only thing you can’t do is wait around for people to find you. They won’t!
Last word of advice is if you are putting in way to many hours and destroying yourself just to keep yourself able to pay the bills,,well you just created your own hell. I was there
And it sucked bad. Nobody cared that I worked so hard to make the money. They only asked why I’m not making more because I work so much.
It’s a destructive business so be careful to your personal life and family .
Just because someone charges less doesn’t mean you have to, People buy the same stuff for all different prices. You are the one that matters and your quality of work
