    Great video! I got my water kefir in the mail two days ago. They have been in a jar with sugar, water, lemon, and raisins. Hopefully today I can bottle them. I think I will try it with the grape juice like you mentioned. I am making this mostly for my kids. My youngest son has a weak immune system and I am hoping this will help. That's why recipes to make it taste good are so important. He will not really eat my sauerkraut or other cultured foods I make. This was one I thought he might really enjoy. He can't have dairy, so I had never thought of kefir. Then I heard about water kefir and couldn't wait to give it a try

      +Alison Self That's Wonderful, it's an excellent prebiotic, way better than any pill you can buy. :) Thank you and I'm really glad you enjoyed it. :)

    I just wanted to thank you for this video. I just got some water kefir grains yesterday. The bottling of the kefir was exactly what I wanted to know more about. Super helpful video. Its been hard to find good videos on this part of making water kefir. Lots of good info out there for caring for them but little on the bottling for making it fizzy, so I was very happy to see a clear video on it.

    I learned that if you put it in the friger before opening the bottle, the bubbles will calm down a little and won´t make a mess like that.

      +yellowsunshine65 it needs to ferment at room temperature and then it should be refrigerated.

    Altho some people say to avoid using stainless steel implements, no one says why. Here she implies it's OK but doesn't say why either! And doesn't anyone ever measure their ingredients?

      +Stan Mrak Hi Stan, Some people say to not use stainless steel, but you can, its non reactive metal. :)

    hi...love your video - quesiton - what is the status for your slow growing kefirs? My grains are small and they are slow growing --although they make probotic drink...I live in a warm climate - Georgia. I also follow the rules. The only thing i am doing different is that I am using cool boiled water. thanks for your comments!

      +kkidd1108 Thanks and the best water to use is well water due to the mineral content and kefirs are usually slow growing only when you first get them, while there adjusting to a new environment.If you can try using a spring water or something that has minerals in it but never city tap, you should start to see a difference in size and speed of growth. :)

    I saw somewhere where you are supposed to burp your bottles daily so that you don't get that big explosion upon openning.

    • @vintagekitchengardener8674
      @vintagekitchengardener8674  9 років тому

      +Victoria Young I don't because I want the carbonation to build and I only leave for 2 days, the only ones I have had explode are the bottles that had some sort of defect, like a chip or something.

    What type of bottle brand do you recommend? Thanks

    • @vintagekitchengardener8674
      @vintagekitchengardener8674  8 років тому +2

      +Theresa Colopy bottles used for beer that would be gotten from a brewing supply store are best because they can handle extremely carbonated liquid. :)

    Hi. May i ask what kind of bottle is that?

    • @vintagekitchengardener8674
      @vintagekitchengardener8674  8 років тому

      +lowlightRN Hi,these are beer bottles you buy from a brew shop that sells everything needed for brewing your own beer, these are best to use, but if you can find a used flip top beer bottle, usually smaller but exactly the same just make sure there are no chips or cracks :)

      Just the other day my bottle exploded and almost hurt my husband. I am not using bail bottles anymore.

      I understand you not wanting to use them but this can happen if the bottle has a chip or a crack or is left to ferment for more than 2 days,always burp bottles and jars. Another thing you can do is place a towel over the bottles

    • @JanColdwater
      @JanColdwater 8 років тому +1

      VintageKitchenGardener I did have a towel over it and it hadn't been more than 12 hours... I think I didn't leave enough headspace in the bottle this time around. I tried a half gallon jar with plastic wrap over the top. It still carbonates well enough but the plastic gives and rises so seems to be safer.
