Oh my god, I once bought the most beautiful satchel. I got in the car with my friend and she went “what is that smell” and we realised it was my bag. It smelt like a dying goat, that smell never went away.

@@hellocatwalkcity we should never be made to feel that way. I’m the end, it’s our hard earned money and we are the ones who have to live with the products we’re buying. I would much rather feel uncomfortable and awkward at someone who throws me attitude then to have sleepless nights regretting a large purchase.

Oh no... on last week I ordered a handmade bag for daily use. When it came the smell was...Oo... the mix of leather and something else... so strong smell! But the craft is sooooo amazing, so I just leave it for a time waiting when smell will disappear. I had an experience and my another 2 bags now are ok but first time they also smelled a lot:))) if you cant wait - just return and don't get a stress ♡
I got my Dragon Diffusion a few summers ago in the light tan color you wanted but in a different style and it came perfect with no smell or anything. So maybe it’s whatever dye they use for the colors you have? That said,, Dragon Diffusion has been popular in Asia (Japan and Korea) for a while now and none of the videos I’ve watched or reviews I’ve read mentioned any issues. So maybe find a light tan one and try again? I love mine and expect to use it for years to come.

Usually bad smells with leather is an improper leather prep and tanning. Definitely return, your nose is correct!

If you want to experiment, place a charcoal (protected in some wrap) or used dried tea bags inside each of the bag to see if the smell is reduced or removed but it may take a while.
Thank you for the suggestion. I’ve used charcoal and baking soda, as well as coffee beans for mild odors in the past. However the odor coming from these two totes is way too overpowering.

I have a couple of handmade traveling bags from India and Ceuta and all had the smell you described. I couldn’t give the bags back because they were bought in the street during vacations but eventually the smell dissipated after sometime.

@@farinaldo very interesting! I purchased a LV Cannes bag made in Spain and smelled like that. I tried everything and the smell kept coming back so I sold it and repurchased another Cannes also made in Spain and had the exact same smell!!! I was hoping it would be different but no. I sold the second one as well.

No, I didn't mean LV leather from Spain is wrong tanned in my last comment, I decide to delete the comment because I'm very upset of people that aI'm sick of people who are upset that there are LV products made in Spain and look for defects. chauvinism in its purest form. I am looking for a tote too. But I have already decided to buy a goyard tote as this year’s Christmas gift for myself. A lot of people think it is overpriced coz it is not real leather. But it is practical and light which is the tote I am looking for.
The goyard tote is nice- I had 2 but they wore down very quickly due to the handpainted nature of the bag- parts of the bag just faded-just word of caution.
Goyard is canvas, and canvas certainly has its merits. Same reasons why I enjoy LV canvas! 😉

Contact them and ask them. It could be from the vegetable dyes and the fact that these leather strips have not been through the usual process of tanning. So no chemicals have been used. Organic version. Maybe u shd them dry out, I dunno. But ask them n then decide. They will last. I have a similar kinda bag and 20 years n its still so good. I never kept in air con. Stored at room temperature in Malaysia n its pretty hot here.
Thank you. It seems from the comments below that this type of unpleasant odor can come from a rushed tanning process. Which, if true, is unfortunate as these are such gorgeous totes.
Maybe get a BOTTEGA Venetta bag ….it has that weave pattern and their leather is buttery soft.🥰
Yes, Bottega makes beautiful bags! Many of them are quite heavy though and I was hoping I could find something light and airy for summer use too. I really wish these didn’t smell!!

I bought a dragon diffusion bag from net a porter last year and I ended up selling it. The color was very off from what was advertised and the smell was horrible. I thought it would air out and it never did. I bought another bag from Matchesfashion and color was correct with no weird smell. So I guess it’s a gamble. But I do love bag and the quality.
I bought a purse strap once and it smelled like that and I tried to air it out and it didn’t completely disappear. The purse strap was nylon.
I would contact them before returning?
I ordered a bag from Neiman Marcus several months ago that arrived in the wrong color from what the website and confirmation stated. I liked both colors, but was very confused when I opened the box.
Omg! I just ordered a small triple jump but they sent a mini. And yes I ordered it from NM!! I was thinking about returning but realized I like the size and keep it. The DD tag says it’s a small but when I measures it against the dimensions given by DD website, it matches with the mini. At least there was no smell.

I bought a leather duffle bag from Morocco which smelt like that.....and it NEVER went away! I hung it outside for days, filled it with rice, febrezed it...nothing worked.Apparently it happens when leather is tanned too quickly.
Oh no!!! I didn’t know that’s what happens when leather is tanned too quickly. I found it odd that both bags smelled exactly the same (not good). I usually love the smell of leather and THIS is not it. Thank you for sharing!!

Yes, you may want to order directly from the brand though and note the odor. I ordered these two from two different sites and they both came with the same unpleasant odor.
They use buffalo leather for the bags which from my experience has a more animalistic/earthy smell. Not sure what else it could be. It’s a bummer they did not work for you
I checked this bag last week in my department store because it was tagged “a new brand”. What attracted me was the rich dark green color. The bag looked good from far but far from good :( I didn’t actually like the way it felt in my arms. It was flimsy, like a jelly... and then I looked at the other models and I got the feeling that this brand was trying to catch some Bottega’s fame and decided it was not really original. I can’t remember the smell, but I guess if it was on display for a while - then it was gone

Just let it air out a day. If it still smells badly after two days then send it back. Sometimes items are stored in a way they are unable to “breathe”

I purchased leather shoes and it smelled like manure as well. It smelled horrible. That sucks.
