- Der Atlas from Schubert's Schwanengesang sung by tenor James King, accompanied by pianist William Hughes.
James King was one of the greatest Heldentenors of the 20th century.....one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century!! His Lieder singing is not so well known, and it's a great shame that the LP from which this recording comes from has never (to my knowledge) been released on CD. Der Atlas comes from the collection of Schubert songs known as Schwanengesang. It's dramatic nature suits King's tenor voice perfectly! Enjoy!
He can carry the world, that is obvious.
I sang this In my third year recital. It is a truly moving piece. The teacher who gave it to me cared deeply about my voice. Alas, he had to leave the uni. The teacher the uni put me with after that could not have given less of a shit about me- and gave me bad habits I am still undoing 9 years later. Alas my singing was sub par in the recital.
However good it could have been, it could never have matched this! Bravo King.
The right voice for this Lied. So rare to hear this song by a voice of real depth and character. Thank you for posting this tremendous singer's rendition.
