Very Nice Explanation! For some reason it took me many months to really understand syncopation and get the hang of being able to add it into my fingerpicking. Seems simple, but gets a lot more complicated when you actually try it. I found I had to "hear" the music inside me before I could get this to work in practice. I was just orking on some syncopation exercises when I found your video. Thanks for putting this video up, as it is one of the best explanations of what syncopation is, AND how to use it in your songs. Nice teaching style. Cheers!
Great share there...yes, for many it's a matter of hearing it and copying it, even if they don't fully understand it. Certain players favor it, others don't. John Prine is mostly even, unless he's doing a blues. Good luck with your picking.
Fantastic breakdown and bringing it all together with tabs on screen. I was skeptical once i saw "Camptown Ladies" (although I have a lot of respect for Stephen Foster and his impact) but it's actually a perfect song to make into syncopation because most know the simple melody and from there add the magic of syncopation... gonna have to go back and watch 101 and check out your other vids. And ill subscribe since im impressed by this one. Thanks a bunch.!!! (And youre right, for some people i does take a while to grasp, it's like rubbing your stomach and patting your head; but if you do it an hour solid and day; in a month you'll be able to do it while doing backflips, haha.)
Always great to hear that something really connects with folks. I've had those experiences as I learned from others as well. Good luck with your picking.
Also, would absolutely Love it if you did this same kind of video, with another song, showing how it "transfers" and so maybe people can learn it with another easily-recognizable song that wasn't originally syncopated; again, thank you.
@@EddieCollinsMusic Thank you; very much appreciate this vid and i know you have a lot of good ones across the board; just really trying to 'crack the code' for Travis picking specifically with syncopation... playing like Mississippi John Hurt is my highest level on guitar to reach.... and ive been playing for 20 years, just finally really trying to dial in this style. Thanks.
Mitch, I do have a Travis picking lesson for banjo. It doesn't break it down quite like this, but it's a start: ua-cam.com/video/0AgkTeqWoqk/v-deo.html
Thanks for the lesson Eddie. This is a great tune to learn the technique with.
Thanks, Dustin. Yes, good to first try it with one "you know you know."

Tim, I do create videos based on folks feedback, so I'll keep this in mind when working on 103. Thanks.

Great lesson...anyway you could do something like this for banjo?
