    My sister and I just sold our family home. About 69 years ago our grandfather propagated a rhododendron and planted it in the yard. We watched your video to learn how to take cuttings, root hormone, plant and try and grow them!!! We probably have about 20 of them. Now we’ll keep our fingers crossed 🤞 and hopefully they’ll grow!! Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise!! 🌱

    Hi Mike, I just wanted to thank you for your great advice. I'm a complete rookie gardener in the UK and I watched some of your videos last Autumn. I've managed to get lots of cuttings to grow by following your videos. I'm especially pleased to have got a couple of rhododendron cuttings from my late father-in-law's garden to take. It means a lot to my wife as it will remind her of her dad. Thank you for that! Phil

      @bigbearlife6642 Hi,
      I dipped them in hormone rooting powder. I don't know what else you could use. Sadly, even though I said in my comment to Mike that the cuttings had taken, they died about 6 or 7 months later.

    Here in W. Oregon those grow wild at about 3,000 ft elevation. We were picking hedgehog mushrooms deep in a thick patch of Rhodys that are nearly impossible to move through. We ran right into a bear eating the same mushrooms less than ten feet away. That thing started grunting at us like a pig and clicking its teeth. It then ran several tight circles around us. It ran through what we could barely crawl through like nothing. Thankfully it left, so did we. Your vids always bring that memory back lol.

Have most every rhododendron you did cuttings of in this video. Been growing rhodies for 45 years. If you're pruning heavily, then do that in the winter, while the plants are dormant. If you just want to do a light trim, then the spring is best, just after blooming. That way it will still set blooms for the following year.

    How do I know when it’s time to pot up rooted cuttings? I rooted some rhodi curt over the winter. Some have shoots 3-4” long; others have tiny only. leaves. I pulled out a couple sort of in the middle, with short shoots. The roots are only about 1/8” long. How do I know when it’s time to pot them up?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Рік тому

      I leave them alone for the first summer. Just fertilize and continue to water them right in place and let them grow nice root systems. Then I pot them up the following spring. Rhododendrons are slow starters and take some time to get going.

    I'm so glad that you are making propagation videos again. You inspire so many people to try propagating just about anything. Several weeks ago I told you about the red leafed 'Midnight Marvel' hibiscus shoot that I had inadvertently broken off when planting. I had removed all leaves including the buds I left only the top 2 leaves and stuck it into the pot but the shoot didn't survive. Well "hold the phone", yesterday I was watering and noticed that there were little tiny sprouts on it! This has definitely taught me something about being patient and waiting longer before giving up on a cutting. We have finally cooled down a little here and are getting rain so I think I'll plant the 2 large hibiscus plants out into my landscape. Although I'm temped to dig that shoot to see how many roots it has ...I won't. I just love the rhododendrons you have in your landscape ...so beautiful!

My husband messed up a pair of great old shears that we inherited from his father by sharpening the heck out of them with a tool that didn't even sharpen them in the right place but over sharpened the blades with a grinder, that there is a little space now that was created between the blades and I can't use them anymore. Azalea root very easily from cuttings and yes, I treat them the same as the larger leaved rhododendrons. Take the cuttings in early to mid August and they should root within 6 to 8 weeks. I like to leave them in their frame on bottom heat for the first winter and then plant them out the following spring but you could try planting them right away. For rhododendrons, I prefer the outdoor frame with the bottom heat. I did use totes for them when I first started but had little success. Has to be on current season's new wood. I took them from the bottom for several reasons. 1) I like to prune my rhododendrons like trees so it makes sense to take cuttings from the sides and bottom. 2) The best cuttings come from growth that isn't at the top because it isn't as thick and robust and there are less flower buds on the lower cuttings. 3) The plant is too tall to take the top cuttings, lol.
