  • Imagine a Nespresso machine, but for ice cream! The ColdSnap turns liquid, shelf-stable pods into frozen treats like ice cream, smoothies or cocktails. Here's how it works and more importantly, what it tastes like.

We've all been in that situation where it's late at night you've finished a movie and you want to watch another one, you go to the ice cream machine and you've run out of pods.

Why can't the machine auto identify what canister is in it?
There's no need to make the user pick thru the menu.

I noticed that, too. But you'll note that she had inserted the pod and closed the lid before she put a bowl down. I bet that's the reason why ... to make sure there's a receptacle in place before it starts to dispense. That said, reading the QR code and just displaying a "Go" button should solve that problem and prevent user error.

Great concept and implementation...and so well presented. Ideal for a family. Here in NYC, soft-serve is $5.00.
A trip to the ice-cream shop can cost $20+ per family.
    That said, we buy a 48 oz Friendly's ice-cream for around $2.50. At Aldi it's $1.99.
But this is a different market. I applaud the inventors for creating a unique niche product.

On the surface it seems like a good idea and then you realize the novelty of it will wear off very quickly. I have a very nice Whynter Ice Cream Maker with it’s own refrigeration built in for just $300.00. I can turn out a quart of ice cream in about 20 minutes. At 20 minutes it is at “soft serve” stage. I can just put it in the freezer and it would be like normal ice cream in about 45 minutes to an hour. Maybe not as fast as what is shown in the video, but certainly quick enough and I control the ingredients!

It’s because ice cream has to be shaken and rotated while freezing in order to become creamy, otherwise it just hardens into a milk block. Like trying to refreeze melted ice cream by just tossing it into the fridge (it’s too gone, bro, it can’t come back nooo) I believe the machine rotates and scrapes the mix quickly inside the canister (*which is cold and acts like a an instant freezer) against the sides to make it creamy instead of just icy. I’m not the designer so I could be wrong, but that seems to be what’s happening considering the machine shakes so much.

So basically we have a new kitchen appliance taking up a lot of space and requiring the same ongoing financial commitment the HP created back in the day with the inkjets and their cartridges. The pod-based coffee machines pay for themselves in most households and are quite flexible. This gadget, on the other hand, offers absolutely no redeeming qualities that would merit its investment at any price point. Aluminum cans with a stirring mechanism inside--all for a single serving--of whatever--that won't ever be cost-effective. But then again, enough people are out there who will buy it that it will recoup the investments of those who designed it. Good luck to them five years from now when the manufacturer is struggling to sell enough of the pods, because sales have dropped off, because...because...because...

You can guarentee that your can product is freezed to the correct temperature. I understand that there might be no scanner or camera to scan the qr code but maybe offer different level models.
