Moulting in racing pigeons

Moulting is the seasonal replacement of feathers with the aim of renewing worn feathers and adapting the pigeon to climatic requirements.
The pigeon moults throughout the year some feathers of the down and it is a sign of good health of the real moult which is the replacement of the feathers. This begins in spring and continues with the great moult at the end of summer.
The adult pigeon moults following a well-established rhythm. It begins by moulting the first flight feather and when it is well advanced in its growth, the second flight feather will be moulted and so on...
Environmental conditions (light, food, temperature, etc.) have an influence on moulting.
A change or a lack of food will interrupt the progress of the moult because the energy and protein demand of the pigeon is much greater during the moult.
All pigeon fanciers know that there is a close relationship between moulting and breeding.
