Finally! My people!! I am a plant based homesteader and was beginning to think I was alone. I do love the homesteading community, it's great for the most part, but have found some animosity about being plant based. I've been told I wasnt a real homesteader because I dont have meat/dairy animals. I also believe that if you are going to eat meat then you should be the one raising it and processing it. I come from a ranching family, and am a 4h and FFA alumni, however I love animals and could never harm them. It's not in me💛

You are not alone!! & that is SO frustrating to me that someone has said you’re not a real homesteader. That is so far from the truth, homesteading can mean so many things. I am so glad you found our channel!! 💛

“Animosity about being plant-based”. Sounds quite fitting, when you think about it.😊

I grew up similar to you and my family is a big hunting family and I was also in 4H. I believe the same if people want to eat animals they need to raise or hunt it and process it themselves. I can't bring myself to do this so I wont. I am excited to start a plant based homestead

Great video! Very inspiring. I also plan on becoming vegetarian homesteader in upstate NY.
I turned vegetarian the day I left my farm in Brazil not knowing when I’ll return and a bull that I raised from calf came up to where I was sitting and laid down next to me and put his ginormous head on my lap. We have a lot to learn from these magnificent beings. God bless you guys

I am so glad I stumbled across this video. I have always wanted a farm, have always wanted to raise farm animals and grow my own food. I love gardening, animals, and the environment in general. Having a homestead is a complete connection to our amazing planet and it is such a beautiful thing. Only thing is, I am 100% plant based. Whenever I mention wanting a farm to anyone, they think I’m crazy when I tell them I wouldn’t raise animals for meat. So seeing your lifestyle is very encouraging. Mostly for the manure which has made my garden explode! I am mostly vegan. No one I know of around here is even plant based, much less having a homestead. I live on a quarter acre suburban lot.

I really enjoyed this video. I had a moment finally to myself to check it out. We have chickens but don't eat their eggs. My daughter will have them once in a while. I started out eating them in the beginning. My husband went 100% plants for health reasons several years back and we started transitioning. I plan to keep chickens though. They've cut our tick population, eaten the snakes, mice, etc. And we get free tilling of our garden soil! Plus, I really love their personalities. We're learning more and more about growing our own food and our daughter sells the eggs to learn to save, spend and give. Thanks for sharing your video.

    • @SunshineFarm

I'm so glad you watched it! I just love keeping chickens, they have so many benefits to a farm with their ability to keep away pests, and produce amazing fertilizer, lol. The eggs are kind of just an added bonus for us. If we didn't have chickens, I doubt we would eat eggs, it's mostly due to the fact that we know exactly how the chickens are cared for and they lay them without us doing any work.

Exactly why I became a vegetarian over 30 years ago. Well, actually, I’m pescatarian & I plan to stock my dam with fish & harvest what I need. People from either side of the plant/meat argument might see that as a “gotcha”, but I don’t think the soul always follows logic. I won’t eat what I’m not prepared to kill, which I think is more than can be said for the majority of meat eaters.
Best of luck to you, from Australia ❤

I sold all my birds and became a vegetarian 7 years ago after my 2nd or 3rd time processing roosters. 😭 It wasn't getting easier to kill them and cut them up like people said it would, and I was bawling by the end of it. I'm very grateful for all the vegetarians and vegans in the world. Thank you! Vegan (since 2007) greetings. PS: whoever thinks veg homesteading isn't homesteading is being silly, especially if you want to be as self-reliant as possible, most people don't grow grains and animals that are raised to be killed for their meat are usually fed grains. You can grow amaranth, lupines in most places and get all the essential amino acids from each of those plants. The space can be used for those plants instead of for animals and you're a lot more self-reliant and cost-effective than if you have to feed animals (with your grains or grains that you buy) on top of it all.

You are the real deal. I have endless respect for you guys. I can't even explain what a high esteem i have for you.
You are the future of mankind and the most righteous type of people on the planet.
I am of course vegan or (vegetarian because i eat eggs from rescued hens we raise freely) and have been since birth because my family on my mother's side has been vegetarian for countless generations for religious reasons. I am a veterinarian married to another vet so it is of course out of question to eat anything of animal origin beside unfertilized eggs. The proceeds of our job go to animal rescue which is why we have opened three rescue shelters, (pets, farm and exotic animals , all rescued from slaughterhouses, dairy farms, fur, feather and skin factories, circuses, breeders, movie sets, and labs) . The only hard part is to get the meat to feed those animals, but we actually work with the least cruel slaughterhouse we could find (don't get me wrong they are all cruel) and i go pick up the left over every day (not the funniest trip) to feed our animals.
If you guys ever need any financial support, feel free to contact us, we will gladly help however we can.
    Greetings from Europe.

    Love your channel
My husband and I bought a 2000 square metre property against a mountain in Sub-tropical area in Pretoria, South Africa and our desire is also to plant our own produce and live off the land - even if we can reach a 50% self-sustainability we will be quite happy. We love to learn from others.
Although we are Plantbased-VEGANS we are interested to know that if we DO rescue chickens (and dont want them to re-produce --- what can one do with their eggs, without giving it away or selling it.) As we do not want someone else to start an inhumane chicken farm from the eggs we sell or give away.
We would like your advice. We heard from farm sanctuary in Watkins Glen (Gene Bauer's) farms, that they feed the eggs back to the chickens so they get calcium in their diet (I hope I am relaying the message correctly)
    Anyway, thanks for your channel.

So thankful to find your channel. I didn’t think anyone was trying vegetarian homesteading. I had the same thoughts about animal farmsteads. I think it would be so much cheaper and easier not to raise animals. Have you ever heard of Scot and Helen Nearing. They had a vegetarian homestead that started back in the 30s into the 80s. I heard about them in Mother Earth News in the 80s. Since then I haven’t heard much about vegetarian homesteading. Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Eating 1 egg per day is just as bad as smoking 5 cigarettes per day for life expectancy... Most ppl say vegans lack vitamin b12, but in actuality many meat eaters are also B12 deficient. All adults over the age of 50 should be taking B12 supplements, no matter their diet. Ty so much for choosing compassion.

Oh so happy to find your channel! Very excited to follow more of your videos! I am mostly plant based and my family is slowly coming on board! (Yay!) But they do still eat a predominantly wfpb diet... we have long wanted to transition to a more sustainable homesteading way of life... and more and more I have wanted do so without having to raise animals... or at least very minimally raising animals... (ie maybe a few chickens..? We'll see how that all plays out!)
Anyway thank you for having this channel and offering alternative ideas to homesteading!

Grow your own sweet potato slips! Nestle your sweet potato(es) half way in soil, longways, in your window or warm greenhouse, and keep moist. The slips will emerge after a week or so, depending on how warm you can get it and how much sunlight it receives. When the slips are about 6” tall, gently pull them off the sweet potato and stick in your soil. They will look droopy the first day or three, but if you water daily, they’ll perk up. Sweet potatoes need full sun and lots of summer heat.
Some people sink their sweet potatoes in water to grow the slips. I feel like plain water will create more mold/bacteria, but there is success doing it this way too.

Just wanted to share something-- not to be alarmist but I feel "knowledge is power". I am the seventh generation of a farming family and Im just beginning to realize that previous generations did not always realize what they were doing!! I just saw the movie "Dark Waters" (2019). Excellent movie, but heartbreaking. Its streamable on Amazon.
Was your property an old farm property? DDT, Lead, PFOAs, any traditional pesticides might be residual. I have learned that any property located near a landfill (or dump), chemical plant, airport or military base, furniture treatment factory (waterproofing)... any industry that is connected to Dupont or Chemours or the nuke industry must be tested and retested consistently. PFOAs and other forever chemicals have not been cleaned up yet!!! After seeing the movie Dark Waters, ....Well, I know now to NEVER use non stick or teflon cookware, or anything known to contain PFOAs. Dont eat from dirt that might have been where the old lead paint had chipped off from old buildings!!! All homesteaders must be wary of ANY industrial sludge and/or waste from previous generations on their land (Old lead in paint chips that have dissolved into soil that should never be gardened), ect. ect. ua-cam.com/video/RvAOuhyunhY/v-deo.html. ua-cam.com/video/-v4NvQqVrF0/v-deo.html

I recently picked up 5 acres of 100% raw property in the high grasslands of Park County, CO. with zero neighbors. It is very, very remote. I love the idea of this lifestyle and I am absolutely unable to harvest an animal. I don't live on my property. But one hang-up I have is ... How do you keep your bellies full in the winter? I mean... are you able to store veggies or even harvest them some how when it's freezing outside for months?

Lots of preservation options! For example we had tofu orange “chicken” last night over rice with sautéed onions and peppers from last years garden and a side of garlic edamame also from last years garden. So the tofu and rice were store bought, but all organic, and the rest was from the garden

Follow up questions with regards to keeping chickens for eggs: Do you hatch out your own chickens? I have wondered this for a while- I want to avoid buying chicks from a hatchery, since male chicks get the axe there and it feels like an unethical source. But If I want to hatch out 5 hens, I need to hatch 10 eggs because half could be male, give or take. And 5 ish roosters is way too many for a small homestead.

What would it take to completely live off your land as a vegan and make it through the winter? I notice you're not eating much calorically valuable from your land, not growing grains, beans or a substantial amount of starches to even make it through the summer. Is it possible to be a self-sustainable vegan without being forced to utilize industry?

Thank you for making this channel. I love watching the homesteaders, but it just breaks my heart when they show you these animals that are going to go off to slaughter. I respect people who raise their own animals and humanely dispatch them themselves but it’s not something for me. If I can live without taking the life of another creature I prefer to do that. I however love the natural life and I’m glad to be able to follow someone on their Homestead without the worry that I will see them gathering their creatures for the big yearly slaughter. I had a very small garden in a community patch that pretty much fed my family for like five years. My husband and son eat meat and I don’t and I did not need anything but what was in that garden to sustain me. So I’m quite sure you can have a homestead without raising meat.

Homesteading is the process and habits of gaining/using skills and infrastructure to support your home with self reliance.
    To do that:
If you eat meat you need to raise animals/hunt/fish. If you don't eat meat, you don't need either of those. (don't need fur, clothing can be made with plant based material)
For health, everyone needs plant food. So growing your own plant food is necessary for complete homesteading.
    Herbs as well is necessary.
Beyond that, there is a large list of self reliant skills that could be considered part of homesteading.
Also, It is impossible to be 100% self reliant, so a homestead will always have external inputs.
I'm one who can't do the animal killing for empathy reasons, so I will never raise any meat animals.
I like hens and wanted them for eggs and compost byproduct. But having hens means sometimes you end up with extra roosters and hens get old, etc.
I have a "killing cone". With that and a long sharp knife I can manage the killing of those. (I hated when I had to do it with chopping block and axe)
I can do fishing, but there are so many much more productive ways to spend my time.
However, I don't agree that one should not eat meat because s/he is emotionally unable to do the butchering part. Nature has predators that kill other animals, so I don't judge those humans that can do it. I do think killing animals for sport (or enjoying the process) is inhumane. So if you can't do it yourself but still like eating meat, you have to get someone else to do it for you. But then you need to buy local so you know the animals were treated humanely.
I once saw a drone shot of a feed lot for beef cattle and said "I will never buy meat in the store again!" Since then I have bought the occasional box of wings when I was craving meat, but that's all.
I had a fisheries observer job for a couple years. That has to be one of the most environmentally destructive industries on the planet!!! We just don't see the destruction because it's covered in 100+ feet of water.

    • @SunshineFarm
      @SunshineFarm  5 років тому +1

I think our emotions can sometimes guide us in our ethics. So, what I was saying in this video, is that if you're not emotionally capable of killing animals, that may be an indication that you should not be eating them. I think a lot of people eat meat under the belief that they don't have to think about the animal that died, and I just don't think that's okay at all, but I also acknowledge that this is my perspective.
