      They are good compromise antennas. Is it perfect, no. No antenna is. I know several people that use these mounted to their window air conditioner, on top of their refrigerator, setting on the floor in their attic or on a shelf on a bookshelf. Since it's a no ground plane design it's not picky about what it's setting on. I actually ran around for almost a year with this on the roof of my 1 ton van and noticed no difference in performance compared to the normal ground plane version of this antenna from Laird.

    I bought a browning. Measured the diameter of the antenna rod, .2.5 mm. Ordered 2.5mm stainless rods from Amazon. Now if I make a cutting mistake, I have ten more rods to go. I can also make a seperate cut for uhf ham frequencies. . Have a Nagoya ut-72 that comes more tuned for GMRS. I cut and tuned a rod, again 2.5 mm for UHF ham frequencies. Now have 2 dual use antennas. I hold a license for both.

    Personal favorite is the Laird TRAB4500NP antenna. Use them a lot for control stations, often a simple L bracket for the mount. Unity gain without a ground plane, 3 dBi with antennas. Not for working DX but for interfacing with local repeaters works great.
    Often I mount these to metal structure in metal framed buildings.

    Hi Mike, Nice video. I recently picked up the 4503 (5/8 wave version) and 4505 (5/8 over 5/8 what you have in the video) and have a Laird magmount also. Locally I have tried many repeaters using both of them on the car and found the 4505 to be a little better but I also have a Laird 1/4 wave which is what I have been using and seemed to do equal or better in some cases than the 4503 but the 1/4 vs the 4505, I found the 4505 to be 6 db or 1 s unit stronger on one repeater and about the same on others. So it really depends on the application. Of course I am up here in Williamsport, PA where high mountains are typical, it just depends. 5/8 over course typically work better in the flat lands and 1/4 better for mountain areas with the high angle of radiation.

    What could the expected range be
    for this antenna with a 5 watt HT?
    I know, too many variables!! But a
    rough estimate would be okay for
    a mobile & set up as a base.

    New to all of this but I'm thinking of installing a base unit/power supply on a shelf in the back of my closet. The closet is for storage only and does not get opened very often. Don't want to drill through the ceiling and into the attic if at all possible for the antenna. Can the antenna reside on the same shelf or should I put it on a higher shelf? Would you recommend the Laird (with or without the ground plane) for such a configuration and what problems could I expect to encounter, if any? Thank you.

    I am still trying to work out how it works without a ground plane and as it is 5/8 over 5/8 wave has got me, the only thing to give it a ground of any kind is the braid part of the co-axial cable. Tidy antenna and nice looking though.

    • @mindmaster064
      @mindmaster064 2 роки тому +1

      It's a vertical dipole where each arm is 5/8ths the wavelength. Ground isn't required as it is a 'balanced' antenna already. Essentially 'one arm' of the dipole supplies the ground plane. It probably has a balun at the base to impedence match, so that's all it needs. All this would need is a 12x12 bit of ANY metal (including a tray, cookie sheet, anything really... aluminum foil, lol) under it if it were the type that required it.

      Hard to comment on a radio or it's modifications if I don't have it in front of me to analyze. In general if it's been "peaked" and "modded" then I would probably avoid it. If it's pretty much stock with only a transceiver alignment done to it then it's probably fine.

    • @timtaylor8557
      @timtaylor8557 2 роки тому

      They are very small but I seriously doubt they are 3db gain. Those are only good for close use like people traveling together on the road/trails. You would be better off using something like the one on this video or a GMRS base antenna and disguising it with something like a plant.

      I've often wondered if there is really any difference between the Laird and Browning/Tram versions of this antenna. I know that Laird is generally higher quality products. Another confusing thing is that Browning has 2 versions of it. They have a br-173 & a br-450 both look the same and have similar gain but they don't explain what the difference is.

    What about an 9:1 UNUN driving a piece of copper pipe the height of the house and the ground going to a ground spike driven into the soil, would that work.

    • @thevacuumtubejunky9774
      @thevacuumtubejunky9774 5 років тому

      I have found using a 9:1 Unun feeding twin lead end fed half wave dipole half wavelength to the frequency above ground (earth) to be ideal for the given frequency.
      With what your describing, I'am thinking your talking about a using the ground radial as a "counterpoise" in a vertical polarized installation, which will work as well, as long as your ground is the same length as the radiator (quarter, half, three quarter etc...) your actual RF antenna ground will be at the box where the (balun matching network) is housed in, If I'am understanding your question and description correctly?.
      There is a Ham operator and author Stan Gibilisco ( W1GV) who has literally dozens of you tube videos and many books available, very, very easy to comprehend regarding all forms of antenna designs, balun winding tutorials etc...which I highly recommend to both novice and advanced antenna builders. You can also Install an app " Amatuer Radio Toolkit" which covers practically every frequency of radio communication antenna subject e.i. verticals, horizontal, dipoles, inverted V's, quads, Yagi, ground planes. All that you need to do click on antenna designs desired, frequency and wavelengths desired and the app will calculate everything necessary to construct the antenna. It also covers inductance, capacitance, resistance etc...
