How to Transfer Into a Handcycle

- I've been paralyzed for almost 22 years and for at least 19 of those years I didn't do any kind of recreational activities. I didn't know how to swim, I didn't play any sports, I didn't cycle or ski.
I didn't even ATTEMPT any activities because I was TOO AFRAID to transfer into a bike or onto a piece of workout equipment, etc.
Over the last few years I have made it a priority to be as active as possible and it has been the best decision of my life. I wish I could turn back the clock and do all of the things that I was too afraid to do earlier.
Handcycling feels like freedom to me.
And I want you guys to be less intimidated than I was when learning how to get in and out of one.
I hope this video is helpful! Let me know in the comments!

Another great video.
Very well done. Thank you. I am hoping to find a handcycle or something similar. All I ever have is Canes or an old wheelchair I use sometimes. I live with Ducenne's Muscular Dystrophy. Most places I have lived always eliminate everything for anyone handicapped. No assistant, each person for themselves. Thanks again. Hoping this may help lead me to freedom in my own life once again one day.
Good luck! I know there are lots of adaptations for quadriplegics for cycling that my be appropriate for muscular dystrophy since you have full body weakness.
wow amazing.
Awesome bike we have few riders to make a group here as well. Great exercise also. Ita crazy the amount of room our equipment take up either with sports equipment or spare chair or if ya have a standing frame or anything. I seen you have the same nervous right leg as I do. Lol. Mine goes crazy 🤪 I put on some tap shoes and let her go hahah. I think I am taping out Morse code its always an adventure to get on and off the bike too.
Yep. Just my right leg! My left leg is lazy haha 😄.
Mine too lazy left one hahahha to funny. Hey could we email I am a peer mentor here and always like to have some fellow to chat and have resources to talk and bounce questions if I get and can't answer. Here is my email pendleton383@yahoo.com. thanks keep the great informative videos going. I refer some of the rookies to your UA-cam channel not only to see what they feel is valid and how ya flipped the switch and made a great life dispite the wheels.
@@RFStout definitely. Let's continue this conversation over email! I'll email you right now.
Hi😁
Thanks SO MUCH for making these videos! My daughter uses a wheelchair and your videos are really helpful.
You're welcome! Anything you would like me to do a videos on just say the word!
@@EmpoweredPara you should do some on beach wheelchairs ♿ and Para skies! Recreational stuff!
@@red2775 I'll do ski's next winter! Beach stuff when I can travel again. Thanks for the suggestions!!!
@@EmpoweredPara there's even rock climbing for paraplegics using a harness. Oh and wheelchair ice hockey looks da bomb💣 ♿ 🏒
@@EmpoweredPara if you do a chair review do a tilite crossfire terminator if you get the chance
Hold myself up, make sure my leg is clear... ye that right there. That is what scuppers so many transfers for me to the point I have to go back and start again! What do you do if your leg WON'T clear? And it keeps getting stuck?? When you don't have a hand free to sort that out, because they're both still holding you up??
I go back up into my chair when it looks like me leg won't clear. It takes a few times to get the angle right with my leg. But yes it's definitely thr most tricky part. My new handcycle was hard to figure out the transfer to. Still figuring that one out.
I’m going to try handcycling in a couple weeks for the first time. I’m a T12 paraplegic with Spina Bifida.
You're going to love it! Let me know how it goes!
Does your hand cycle lock and stay in place well? Mine doesn’t seem to so I have to rely on someone to hold it while I try to transfer.
There is a lock under the seat that locks the back wheels and stops them from moving when I transfer. It is the emergency brake!
Hi Brittany just thought I would let you know that my surgery on the 7th one very very well and I'm in recovery this one is very painful and I mean very very painful but I'm doing very well thanks for all the thoughts and Good Vibes in advance
Great to hear it went well. I hope the pain doesn't last too long and that you recover fully without any complications! ❤❤❤
How do you steer on a hand cycle?
the front wheel tilts side to side. The turning radius is huge though so you need lots of space to turn around in a full circle.
Omg id kill for a bike!!! They're like 3 grand or more here. Its insane!!!
I applied for a grant from the Challenged Athletes Foundation! It's a US Foundation so you can too!
@@EmpoweredPara omg really?!??!? How? I'll google it now!! Omg this would make being active sooo much more fun!! I love and miss biking soooo much!!!!
@@WheelingwithmeBethB the next grant cycle begins in the fall. www.challengedathletes.org/grants/
@@EmpoweredPara omg ty ty ty!!! This would be INCREDIBLE!!!!
@@WheelingwithmeBethB your welcome!
I love my handcycle I love mine I was lucky I got mine second hand / gifted to me by a nabour who was upgrading
that's awesome!
@@EmpoweredPara yes it is because of the fact that from the time I was about 12 to now so about 13years I couldn’t bike at all because I had a adapted trike that got stolen so this is a blessing for sure

Where did you get your hand cycle? What brand??
The handcycle in the video is a borrowed one but I believe it is a Top End one. I ordered a Top End Force 3 and it will arrive in July so I will show you guys that when I get it!
@@EmpoweredPara what’s their website? I will check the brand of mine. It’s not fancy but I have had it 5 years now

So, I think I heard you say here that it took you 19 years of no recreational activities because you were intimidated by the transfers, and even tho I am A-B, I can fully understand that. Was there one thing that convinced you that you could do, or try, the transfers by yourself?
Eventually just wanted it bad enough!
@@EmpoweredPara I hope this comes across okay, but I think your transfers are great!
@@westiepower2020 thanks!
