A suggestion on the presentation: When having this kind of budgeting videos, kindly show the finished illustration (as per written mahjong paper) at the end of the video or create a pdf sheet at comment section for us to refer. It will be much helpful when viewers want to refer back after months/years without going through the video again. Much appreciated 🙏

I always wanted to have a big family since I was little, but was always worried about the financial issue. My brother recently got married and his wife is staying home with his new baby even though they don’t have a lot of money. I realized the issue wasn’t really finances but expectations. They have a humble life but are happy.
Honestly, you will never have kids if you wait to have your finances in order

I agree with you when in comes to spending time with the kids. It is not necessary to buy the kids all the toys or traveling to overseas. The just need to spend time to play with you. Also Malaysians are not used to buy secondhand things for reasons I do not want to mention. But second hand things are absolutely perfect usable and it is also good for the environment and it teaches the kids to not be materialistic.

Most parents are obsessed with everything branded and quality stuffs. They won't buy from Shopee or Lazada believe me eventhough they are just normal wage earners. Ego and comparing their kids with others are the reasons for many family issues. Work out financial planning before get married is the best option.

People will never remain on same job company for years. Some of my friend are school dropouts and have kids, they do change jobs when they have level up their skills when cost high. After some years, some of the housewife enter workforce. Thats how they afford. They just dont give birth another baby if they cant afford.

I would say that it is important to have money before raising a child. As a teacher/tutor that observes kids and family upbringing I do find it essential for setting expenses for tuition. There's simply observable differences between kids from well-off families. The objective is simple, do whatever it takes to ensure your kid do not get left behind and knows the basics of that years syllabus. You could personally teach to save but most people don't have the skill or time. The bare minimum is normal tuition but that isn't as effective for left behind students. For these students private personal tuition is best but an hour a week at rm40+ per session simply isn't enough; best is 2 hour sessions twice a week costing +-RM200 a week. I would also recommend kumon but that'll cost rm160+ per subject. Many parents leave it at the last minute, its bloody sad to see a 12 year old unable to read or entering SPM but unable to understand the question for a test.

"As long as you have 1k-1.5k"... Hell, no i don't have that kinda money. Even if i do, i'll put it to investments. Beyond the financial expense of having a kid, the world is heading towards impending doom. Why the hell would i want to bring another human into more suffering?

I’m fairly surprised my comment showed up in the video 😂 I do have to clarify that I’m not against having kids entirely like the other comments. I just think that it’s important to build up your savings beforehand to provide a bit of cushion in case anything goes wrong. It’s good to give a general estimate of how much it costs to have a child but there are too many random variables that could change the actual costs drastically. The best example would be the pandemic. What if something similar were to happen in the future and you lost your job due to the pandemic or the company downsizing or there’s a salary cut? Sure you can live on your savings for a while but you also don’t know when you’re able to get a proper job again. I’ve sadly seen so many moms on kitajagakita begging for milk formula and diapers because their savings are decreasing more and more each day while their husbands can’t seem to find work.
Another random variable is the genetics of your kid. If you’re really lucky, your child will be very healthy. But the possibility of your future child having a bad set of genetics is possible too. My family has a history of asthma and my younger sibling has eczema too (he also has an overall weakened immune system so he gets sick often). So my parents have to spend extra on asthma medication + going to the hospital/clinic often + specialised soap/shampoo. Thankfully my father has medical insurance on all of us but that also means he has to spend extra on insurance (premium to cover all bases too) per month.
Anyways, my point is that before having a kid, I hope people don’t based their capabilities of having a child based on their current salary. You never know what’s gonna happen in the future. Have a good amount of savings first in case of unforeseen circumstances and THEN consider adding a child to the mix. On another note, being a proper working adult with responsibilities made me appreciate my parents a lot more for all the sacrifices (financial and career decisions) they’ve made for me as I grew up 😁

As for my family, we swap toys and baby items. Like, a baby won't fit the clothes after few months let alone kids. So as toys. Even my family that earn higher income do such things. Sometimes, my family have housewife with elder kids, they would help out to take care for a lesser cost as long we buy the food and the kids is safe. They take in kids for few amount and family within the area. But higher income would just get a babysitter. Depends on sillibus, we would also donate or get books from higher income family. I mean, we obviously wont read kids book or kids encyclopedia when turn into teens. I do get education magazine handdown from my relative. Sometimes during holiday, I would teach my younger cousins like Maths since I'm one of top scorer in family. It helps me in score. This have teach me and my siblings to care our item. Like even my colour pencil and even my mechanical in primary school and book from school still exist despite leaving school for 4 years. My phone itself last 4-5 years. We got to save and able to afford nice tuition and further study because of the habit.

Let's not forget raising children require parenting time. At least one of the parents has to quit his/her job to be fulltime housewife...the other option would be daily care centre. Which will add more monthly cost. If one of the parents income is sufficient to cover all that, it won't be a burden. But the cost can be unbarable for lower income parents...

Everyone will go through some sort of financial struggle in life.
Eventually, we are capable of making ends meet.
The only question is which one would you choose? To have a kid, or have a bit of extra money.
It all boils down to which one offers you more value. Family or money?

I want to share my opinion about raising the kid. In the fact mostly the parents who cannot earn so much money will be jealous of the richer family who can provide enough money to send their kids to tuition classes or interesting classes such as dancing, Chinese Calligraphy, Swimming class and so on. Thus, they will force themselves to eat less food daily or even work overtime to send their kid to get higher education since primary school because they fear that their kid will lose to the other kid at the starting point. This is the desire of human-being. As the child of our parents, we must be grateful to our parents and repay their kindness when we start to work outside for earning money because they have spent a lot of time and money for growing up us.

    • @noddingbart6915

Exactly, my parents are both lawyers making an aggregated 7 figure income every year yet me and my sister were sent to government primary and secondary schools, and they only sent us to special "talent classes" like piano or taekwondo when we asked for it, of which both me and my sister eventually ditched. I felt like a lot of my peers were subjected to very high expectations.

    • @when_life_gives_you_limes
      @when_life_gives_you_limes 2 роки тому

      "we must be grateful", yes.
      "repay their kindness", no.
Here's the thing about Asian parents, they think of their children as a form of investment & when the kids are all grown up, they expect them to get their "ROI" back. That is just wrong, your children will eventually become their own persons & they will eventually lead their own lives, they don't owe you anything because they didn't asked to be born in the first place. These are all your responsibilities the moment you decided to become parents.
As the younger Asians, we should really start breaking this unhealthy cycle & spare the future generations of its trauma.
They are your children, not FD accounts or retirement plans.

Thank you for making this video, I hope it can be insightful to many as we know that childbirth rates are dropping across the world in many developed nations, where they are lesser newer people that are being born to replace the old ones. Young people are truly important to run economies and produce net incomes, we are biologically designed to spread ourselves out and reproduce as we go through stages of life and psychologically based on evolutionary psychology as discussed by Jordan Peterson, the older we get the more we are interested in raising families, if we were to compile all the scientific evidence up and look things from a deeper perspective it's really obvious why so many people end up feeling lost later on in their lives as they grow older who don't have children.
Elon Musk has pointed out that our total population is still not as overpopulated as much as we think it is because if you were to take the total amount of people on earth and fit them all up in the city of new york on the first floor they would all still fit it without any issue so to say that we're getting overpopulated it's not really the case, they are so many other factors that are involved when we talk about the prices of things going up with its supply and demand.
Population collapse is possible if the childbirth rates keep dropping and that won't be good for humanity in the long term.
I personally believe that we are disrupted a lot by our way of living in our modern economies, if we are just naturally aligned with the way in which we are evolved biologically I certainly do believe that we are able to be much happier and thrive regardless of the conditions in which we are living in when we have a healthy community and people that we choose to grow with.
I love kids and I think many people should have more kids and raise more families.

Very true, people fail to see that sometimes the best education and service they can give their kids is the one the parents provide it themselves. Secure attachment style is important and can only be "trained" by spending time with your kids, its not always about spending time enjoying $5000 hobbies rather than spending quality time such as reading with your kids to cultivate their habits since young and to teach them important qualities like humility, determination and discipline like what my education minister in Singapore said

the big picture is, you are raising the next generation. you are raising your flesh and bone, your legacy. its not about money. never compare kids and money in the same sentence. it doesnt make sense, and i would even argue that it is unethical to compare or correlate having kids and thinking about money. its not about money, its about being wise, and having the guts to have children.

Mr Money TV: Really detailed and wonderful video! Encouraging and good community insight. I do have a POV from the Chinese kiasu culture tho.
First point - Grandparents' duty. I worked at a kindy and really felt sad upon seeing many grandpas grandmas picking up the grandkids. They looked so tired. It isn't fair. Both Mom n dad of coz needa earn to keep the expensive Honda/BMW.
Second point - Kids' influence. I grew up in a church and (government) school community of crazy rich kids. Despite being in the middle class, my dad did all he could to make sure I had the best. As a kid he bought me the best books to read and the best health insurance. (people please account the cost of storybooks - they bring life and increase intellect :)
I admit I was ungrateful and felt deprived when hanging out and seeing these teenage girls get gym memberships, buy 10 pieces of clothing in one go, and eat luxurious food. Looking back I really wish I was not part of this community of "friends."
That being said, even if you as a parent don't compare - it is likely that your child will. If you do have a home education plan to counter this then great. But if no...get ready for unreasonable demands and throwing of fits.
