Big boi is made to tow an entire train up steep grades alone, the diesel is designed for mass production and would need 2 if not more to accomplish the same task. That's my understanding of them at least.
Mechanical manufacturing and maintenance I'd add and give the big boy. Yes it more stuff, but it's simple metal. Try getting part for a modern diesel electric vs asking a blacksmith to smash out a part as well as it just runs on water and something flammable.
22:45 so coming out of the stack is coal smoke at idle and has a gray haze, buring inefficiently has back sooty smoke, and buring fully at full efficiency is clear white haze. The stack only has steam coming out of it when the train is moving, the steam from the pistons you see at the sides is from standstill you'll open piston steam cocks for letting out condensate. Once in motion the steam travels up to the stacks where nozzles blast it out of the stack to pull the smoke out with it and making fresh air get pulled in over the buring coals at the other end
theres a reason why people love steam trains, the big boy is exactly why... and its only one of so many unique looking steps in the legacy of pressurized hot water via external combustion
I don't know a lot about trains, but that is the thing you hear about steam engines. They may not be quick, or clean, or easy, but damn if they don't pull.
Hey man I love your videos but some quick notes. For the steam locomotive you should've waited until you had full pressure before testing it. It would have definitely accelerated more quickly and maybe pulled up the hill faster. No it won't blow because all steam locomotives have a pressure valve that opens automatically when the pressure gets too high to relieve it. Temperature is what you need to watch out for (always have water. That's why the first locomotive blew up).
The one advanced of steam locomotives is they can take water from a normal stream or pther sources of fuel from regular coal to bunker oil unlike diesels so thats a point
But to be fair diesels dont require anything other than diesel and lubricants. Steam requires Water, Lubricant, Coal. And to add, coal is a lot less dense of a fuel source than Diesel so steam does have to take the L on ease of use.
@@makeshiftgang yes that is correct but your relying on only one fuel source this is also way for example the M1 abrams has a multi fuel turbine engine
fun fact about the big boy / 4-0-1-4 that the 4000s where made to pull up to over 600 cars this was the golden age for steam engins & to this day the big boy will always live up to his name & be the strogest train alive
what i'm about to say may be a bit contentious but the big boy's may not be the most powerful steam engine. the DM&IR railway at the same time as the big boy's built there M-3 and 4 locomotives nicknamed "Yellowstone's" that in service where just as (if not more?) powerful then the big boy's. but there is no definitive answer to which one is truly more powerful just a possibility.
2 Things, If you watch I think 30 seconds later in the video I do. And also it wouldnt have mattered anyway the Diesel will always start up faster in minecraft tbh.
I dont want to argue but there are a lot of academic papers out there saying otherwise. It depends how you compare but its not as simple as one would think. Remember a majority of the emissions from a steam train are water vapor and some un burned coal and such. Diesel electric locomotives burn Diesel and the exhaust is full of by products due to that combustion. Over all both lose to electric in emissions lol (But then account how the electricity is made lol)

Makes sense from what we saw here lol

up its original grade with original load, you would need 5+ modern GPs to match a SINGLE Big Boy.

Unfortunately, In minecraft the steam is harder to build and requires more machines than the diesels do.

Thanks for the explanation/information my guy! That makes a lot more sense when looking at the big picture. Appreciate it!
The big boy really is that big in real life, I think it was the largest steamer ever made when it was first made
It is definitely wild looking lol Makes sense why its called Big Boy
I really love you’re vids, keep it up!!
Thank you, I appreciate the kin words!
theres a reason why people love steam trains, the big boy is exactly why... and its only one of so many unique looking steps in the legacy of pressurized hot water via external combustion
It is definitely a cool machine

I agree, from the tests it appears that is very true lol

Thanks for the info dude, I appreciate that! Maybe we will need to conduct another trial in the future! I appreciate the kind words
Meepman is a god. Keep him at all costs, but if you leave again Meepman we'll have your head.
lol
a bit of a late comment but tbh you should build 2 of the CW44s because I love the engine sound it makes btw another great vid keep it up

Holy, I didnt know that. 600 rail cars is ridiculous!
It's kind of sad that Immersive Railroading didn't add fully functional electric locomotives
Ya fair enough, Maybe it will come in the future
The big boy is giant. The Big Boy 4014 is also a 4000 class and weighs 1.2 million pounds and it has 6,200 horsepower.
The CW 44 wieghs 425,000 pounds and has 4,400 horsepower. Big Boy is better no matter what they say.
We also like trains
Me too
Irl steam locomotives have an infinite amount of torque fun fact. tho the big boy has more Hp and torque than modern diesels
I guess the video shows exactly that!

Swag.
8:00 you should have put coal in all the slots for fast heat up

i LOVE DIESEL
Me to!
diesel burns cleaner then coal xD

Diesel is better because it cant go boom
You forget steam has infinite amount of torque
lol
Have you not watch an engine fail video? They absolutely can tif not quite as spectacularly as steam
@@andrewreynolds912 I know it has more turque but it cant explode
