Jon: >Needs scientist >Uses all prestige, still without scientist >Gains +1 prestige from quest >Sails off without scientist >Goes to next tavern >Acknowledges the need for a doctor >Leaves without one. Again Jon, all the prestige in the world can't help your -10 perception.
I've noticed Jon says "this is everything I want in a game" or something similar to a variety of games that don't necessarily have similar characteristics
What we're not hearing is the end of that sentence, which Jon edits out. The full quote is "Which is everything I want in a game, of this particular type, genre, and developer." See, Jon, it makes more since if you don't edit out the last half of the sentence.
Things Jon wants in a game: 1. Big wooden ships. 2. Dice rolling. 3. Sea shanties. 4. Like FTL, but [something else] 5. Like Fallout, but [something else] 6. Cleaning simulators. What I want in a game: 1. Action-Strategy 2. Depth 3. Emergence 4. Tits 5. Role-playing opportunities 6. Jon doing an LP of it
One evening, Jon played Nantucket/ With the perception of an old wooden bucket/ He was ne'er at a loss/ For when coming across/ Any trouble he said, "Oh--well, f*** it."
Alas, Grover soon met his end/ From the crow's nest which he did tend/ He was thrown to the deck/ With a cry: "Oh flipping heck!"/ T'was an injury no man there could mend.
Captain Jon's troubles thereon did compound/ 'Til finally he fell to the ground/ With no whales to carve/ The whole crew did starve/ Though, funny--I'd have figured he'd drowned.
If you're looking to dole out some bread/ I ask, give to Jon in my stead/ 'Cause I have a good job/ And I'd feel like a knob/ If I let this thing go to my head.
_Researches Shelving_ "Ok lads, we've got all this crap on the floor, well... what if we take some planks, use them to make a bunch of smaller floors mounted to the wall, and store our stuff on those?" "Are ye mad, Captain? Ye're playin' God!"
Like a true Nantucket shipowner (they were well known for being stingy and not embarking enough food for the trip, expecting that the captain and crew would restock provisions en route on the cheap)
Delivers supplies, doesn't go to the port that is more or less on the way to actually get paid for the delivery. Then decides to go to the FURTHEST POSSIBLE port with a load of goods for delivery not even thinking about the fact that he will need to come back. Yup that's Jon.
The remarkable thing about Nantucket is that, while it is still present today, during the days of peak whaling it was a city with the same level of importance of New York or London today.
You can see the former wealth in a City like New Bedford in the streets and buildings Southeastern Massachusetts was the Dubai of the day and the wealth generated oil was put into institutions that are a big part of why our economy is still good
Nantucket is an island that is part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, famous for the whaling industry. You can get their by boat from Boston, Providence, or maybe smaller cities like Salem or Beverly, and you can fly their via flying boat from New York City.
Many A True Nerd One of these days, I really need to finish Fallout 4. It just really bums me out that in the Fallout Universe that my town would be in the middle of the Glowing Sea. I don't know why Bethesda didn't give the South Shore of Massachusetts more love.
Unfortunately, it'd be way off the map. Boston is northeastern MA, while Nantucket is off the south of Cape Cod (the bit that looks like a flexing arm)
Nantucket was where Wings was set. Nobody here watched Wings? It’s two guys and they’re both pilots. It had Roy. He was hilarious! It took place in an airport. And the funny repair guy was Lowell. It launched Tony Shalhoub’s career! I don’t even know you guys! Crazy people. Living under a rock, not knowing Wings. I LOVED WINGS!
*Sees a storm and just sails straight into it*. One of your crew dies from the storm. "Guess we learned a valuable lesson!" (You mean you shouldn't sail into a storm?) "We should get a doctor!" Yeah... that's the lesson... it certainly want the storm that caused all that...
A sea chanty ... So hoist up the Jon B's sail See how the main sail sets Call for the Captain ashore Let me go home, let me go home I want to go home, yeah yeah Well I feel so broke up I want to go home
Man, I read moby dick recently and I was thinking about how good an "18th century whaling simulator" game could be, and then this pops up on my internet. Also yes, the try works was basically a big cauldron they boiled blubber in to render it and extract the oil.
Jon:
>Needs scientist
>Uses all prestige, still without scientist
>Gains +1 prestige from quest
>Sails off without scientist
>Goes to next tavern
>Acknowledges the need for a doctor
>Leaves without one. Again
Jon, all the prestige in the world can't help your -10 perception.
This isn't perception so much as bad decision making.
He did have enough prestige but his ship only had 3 crew slots, which were full
I've noticed Jon says "this is everything I want in a game" or something similar to a variety of games that don't necessarily have similar characteristics

Jon can very easily enthused :)

Yeah well he likes the games characteristics :D

ignores Adolph even though he has a positive trait
hires Grover the xenophobe
Grover died from a lightening strike though so I guess God evened it all out in the end...

Alucard Pawpad Ah, I see you've researched Stacking
This comment just made my day XD
37 days of food
36 day voyage
"This is fine"
And all that just not to spend a couple of extra gold when his purse holds a couple hundred...
Like a true Nantucket shipowner (they were well known for being stingy and not embarking enough food for the trip, expecting that the captain and crew would restock provisions en route on the cheap)
Captain Jon died, everyone else gained the Cannibal trait
:(
They all had scrambled eggs for days
"I LOVE SCRAMBLED EGGS" or "I LOVE SCRAMBLED CAPTAIN"
Many A True Nerd This needs atleast one livestream with superchat names for crew.
Sadly, crewmembers can't be renamed, at the moment at least
I’ve been to Nantucket it definitely does still exist
Not only does it still exist, but I live there
Good to hear as I was bit worried after the last storm we had here in MA. Parts of the mainland still dealing with the flooding that happened.
I know some people up in Gloucester, where the water rose 10 feet or so.
Delivers supplies, doesn't go to the port that is more or less on the way to actually get paid for the delivery. Then decides to go to the FURTHEST POSSIBLE port with a load of goods for delivery not even thinking about the fact that he will need to come back. Yup that's Jon.
yeah lol
i was shouting at the screen the whole time

More please
Yes Jon more, I enjoyed it so much!
Yes more please enjoyed it very much
NZ, no heavy industry, meh shopping, great bars... As a Kiwi, this is spot on.
You know, I’ve had a WHALE of a good time watching this game
I enjoy Jon continuously forgetting that he needs to return to get upgrades
'Mum, did grandad take my copy of...what's that game called again? Moby Dick?'
'No, Nantucket.'
'Well, tell her to bring it back then.'
As someone from South Australia, learn to sing first, debauch second, then well let u in...
"Where the accelerator and brake are." Aaaa, Jon.
Horta is part of the Azores, an island area that is an autonomous region of Portugal.
It's FTL, the Herman Melville edition. lol
20 seconds in...... already hooked
Jon have you ever played Sunless Sea? This felt very similar to it in various ways although Sunless Sea is a bit... darker and unforgiving.
TheGoodNames GotTaken
great game! Don’t know if John’s played it. It’s a few years old now.
TheGoodNames GotTaken Supposedly Jon praised it on twitter but I'd love to see a series or at least a video. Sunless Sea is awesome.
One might even call it un-derforgiving
A try work is a furnace at the front of a wailing boat used to heat blubber into oil
yo, i legit just had a dream where I asked Jon to play more Nantucket and he told me to be quiet because he was on the phone.
Nantucket does indeed still exist. The finest of nectars come from there (Nantucket Nectars).
Whoever did the vocals did a great job 🙂
They're called The Roaring Trowmen.
Nantucket is in Massachusetts, not far from Boston.
Nantucket is an island that is part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, famous for the whaling industry. You can get their by boat from Boston, Providence, or maybe smaller cities like Salem or Beverly, and you can fly their via flying boat from New York City.
I like this . I hope you do a couple more episodes
Nantucket is off the coast of Massachusetts...
I should go swim there in Fallout 4.
Many A True Nerd just watch out for the rads
Many A True Nerd One of these days, I really need to finish Fallout 4. It just really bums me out that in the Fallout Universe that my town would be in the middle of the Glowing Sea. I don't know why Bethesda didn't give the South Shore of Massachusetts more love.

After reading in the heart of the sea listening to you talking about whaling frustrates me so much!
We prefer the term "harpoonista". But "harpoon guy" is fine too.
I would love to see Jon do a full series. Can't wait to get it tomorrow.
John, I grew up on Nantucket Island. It is still there and yes we learned whaling history in school.
I know you said it in the beginning, but I genuinely wasn't expecting the sea shanties. Well done, game. Well done.
I hope we'll see more of this! It's absolutely awesome to watch!
Before watching, I'm going to hazzard a guess that there will be a ton of PER -1 moments in this video
Your crew ate you Jon...
lol
We need more shanties in this world! And once again Jon causes me to buy a game.
Poor Jon, killed by his own stinginess. Always have a surplus of food, Jon.
I'm totally here for the sea shanties, I unironically love them
There was once a ship from Nantucket, captained by some British guy. He was unready and died slow and steady but his crew might've survived.
I like Jon thought the ENTIRE ISLAND of Nantucket might have disappeared in the last century.
There once was a man from Nantucket!
I used to live on the next island over from Horta! That made my day Jon.
Please play more of this
Jon that's not a whale....
The Tryworks (Jon) were a furnace that was used to melt blubber into oil on ships
This is a grand game I would love to see you play more of it.
In which Jon reveals his complete and utter ignorance of all things nautical
love this game, not many are covering it, I hope this will be a full series :)
I'd love to see a mini-series of this!
stream this
A nice detail is that the shanties are morale-dependent: happy crew=happy songs. Demoralized crew=sad songs.
Play Rimworld!!! Nothing is better than harvesting the lungs of your prisoner in the morning.
It was alright.
Horta is probably representing the Azores! I used to live there when I was very young.
Dear Many A True Nerd, please do more of this or more games similar to this!
I love whaling so much. Probably why Dishonored was my favorite game.
Melville was the last name of the author of Moby Dick
Sea shanties are amazingly enjoyable. You can feel the vibrations sprouting hair on your chest.
🎶Whiskey for my Jonny-O🎶
*looks at arm*
I'm pretty sure that tattoo wasn't there before the sea shanty
I know. The whole Black Flag (AC not Henry Rollins) soundtrack is a regular listen for me.
Nantucket is indeed still going.
Its so awesome having UA-camrs get me into games I would otherwise not see. My wallet on the other hand is displeased.
"Strong predominant winds eastly.". Oh! You mean westerly winds!
I'm impressed you made it past Limerick.
Captain Jon can't be a scientist. He knows too little for that.
Captain Jon "The Unready"
Sounds about right...
There is a wonderful limerick about a man who was from Nantucket. You should check it out.
*Sees a storm and just sails straight into it*. One of your crew dies from the storm. "Guess we learned a valuable lesson!" (You mean you shouldn't sail into a storm?) "We should get a doctor!" Yeah... that's the lesson... it certainly want the storm that caused all that...
beautiful game.
Nantucket? There’s a limerick about a guy from there...
Nantucket is in New Jersey. Unless I was really lost that one time.
heard jewey and Aldoph, i had to look up in incredulity to make sure that was correct
we need to keep this going until a successful run XD
So tempted to buy this...
A sea chanty ...
So hoist up the Jon B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up
I want to go home
Play more of this.
I want more of this ^^
This is dope good job
he was actually poisoned by his crew
Nah, they couldn't have eaten him that way
Jon, they ate you Jon. That's how they made it home. ;)
Combat reminds me of Rhea the Awakening, which was a great game you might enjoy if you ever feel like checking it out
More please.
more, please.
Yes here good
Jon thinking Nantucket went extinct is the best
play more of this game !
I love sea shanties.
PLAY KOTOR YOU GIT
Yes b'ys gets a whale off the coast of st. John in Newfoundland
I once knew a guy from Nantucket! ;)
Richard Moby lol
Nice
Wonder if they are not prevailing winds. Perhaps those are currents on the map?
I must have this game.
Still 5 hours until I can buy it.... no fair!
Man, I read moby dick recently and I was thinking about how good an "18th century whaling simulator" game could be, and then this pops up on my internet.
Also yes, the try works was basically a big cauldron they boiled blubber in to render it and extract the oil.
New Zealand with the hook ups

There once was a Nerd from Nantucket....
I'll buy this game just for the sea shanties!
Terra Australis means Antarctica.
