This is one of the stupidest videos I have ever seen about ecology in my entire life!!!! Whoever wrote this text knows practically nothing about Spain (or the Iberian Peninsula in general)! The problem of forest fires in the Iberian Peninsula is mainly due to bad forest management, betting on monocultures, mainly of pine and, what is much worse, of eucalyptus. e.g., Galicia is one of the regions that receives the most rain in Spain, and it is also the region that has suffered the most from forest fires - because of the vast areas of eucalyptus, which are an environmental disaster in every way. I don't understand why - sheer stupidity - to put a huge emphasis on bison - which played their important role in a glacial period. Do you really think that by introducing bison into - very hot - Spain you will end the problem of forest fires?! You know nothing of the ecological dynamics of the dehesa - where cattle (and also sheep and goats) play a major role. Here's a hint to make you think: the few communally managed forests (I mean villagers who organize themselves to use the same forest space without any of them being the exclusive owner) are the ones that never burn...
"Smokey Bear is the cruelest joke ever played on the West" (a 4th gen rancher in farther N. California) We were ALL indoctrinated with that toxic mythology with disastrous results, it needs to be buried in a much more complex reality. Many tree species in America, including our beloved redwoods--Giant Sequoias, *cannot reproduce without fire* I like that that was referenced in the vid for Spain's circumstances as well. That 3× in forests mass has come throug abandonment of agriculture, and rural areas, not throug reforestation. Reforestation plans in Spain, doesn't take in account the original species of the area, it only uses pines and eucaliptus, and those grow fast, leave the soil dead without nutrients, and burn like hell. It's widely demonstrated that areas reforestated like that when a wildfire happens burn inmediatly (pines are filled with trementine) against areas with a diversity on species. Aside, reforestation has become a huge bussines, where politicians own the places that grow and sell the juvenile plants, while making decicions against the firefight resources. In their minds that's circular economy. Most of the wildfires are not that wild but human purposely made. During many years burnt land masses could be turn from agricultural or rural use into urban soil where you could build without environmental restriction.

Born, raised and still live in California. CA is getting worse because since the 1970's the policy has been "let nature takes its course". Well nature is fire is normal and natural. But since CA refused to allow cutting of trees, cleaning the forest floor and continues suppressing fire, all that fuel build up allows for more intense and large fires. Couple that with CA population going from 4 million 100 yrs ago to 38 million today fires destroy more property today in areas that 100 yrs ago had no one living in them and that makes it look like fires are more destructive. CA policy since the 1970's is what makes fires so much bigger and "worse" today. Areas having too many trees that suck up water leaving them all unhealthy, forest floors filled with fuel and people living in areas that even 40 yrs ago few lived all make it seem seem worse.
Not enough the random planting, it would help a massive drop of the destructive city living to move into small communities across the Earth, as we did it here, in Romania, but it is a major shift in understanding to go from taking to sharing, from irresponsibility to taking responsibility for our lives and the slow brainwashing over population has been successful. I honestly don't see chances for a collective awakening in the near future but a limited amount of brave humans that may form little communities in the mountains or far away from globalist cities, if left alone.

This just makes so much sense. Thanks for a great video. There is a Russian scientist arguing the same thing for the northern regions. Can't recall his name.
As an international forest fire expert, I was in 1998 on the Iberian peninsula. There I learned that the wast majority of forest fires in Italy and Spain were set ablaze by firefighters because they were only paid when there was a fire. So paying the firefighters even when there is no fire seemed to be the best way to preserve nature there.
Here in Barcelona there's an initiative of major house consisting on bring back at least one sheepkeepper with kind of 300 living "beeehs" to the mountain of Collserola. The objective is to clear most of the lowest liyer of the forest to prevents forestal fire. It's a bit of non urban style experiment on Bcn.
Very interesting video I never knew any of this about Forests and the Bison in Spain, it is a miracle that Bison held on both in Europe and North America we pretty much made them extinct so sad. I am pleased we in the UK will get Bison back I hope they are well protected
With bison there must also come wolves and other large predators to keep the herd in check. It's good from an ecological perspective, but what will they common citizens and farmers think of the reintroduction of apex predators?
Spain has the wolfs... Around 5000 or 8000. They never be extincted in Spain. The brown bear allso in the north west Forrest. So I think that they can be release in the nature. The last Bisont was hunted in Spain in the X century.
@@bielserra2203 There are literally corrupted forestal agents that get paid by small piece of shit herders to poison the bears they are supposed to protect. We are a shit country
It is evident that the name Héctor is the most common in Spain. 50 million Héctores means that Spanish men and women, as well as immigrants and even introduced bison, are called Héctor.
Australia should not worry about the extinction of koalas due to forest fires, in Spain we have eucalyptus trees to feed millions of hungry koalas, we will also call them Hector.
They should be using goats as well because goats eat all the stuff in the desert and keep trees trimmed to prevent fire from spreading. If you have bison, you should also have chickens. Chickens eat all the bugs that are in the bison poop and spread it around to maximize land fertilization. I will use goats and chickens to fertilize some desert land that I plan on buying.
As mentioned in the video with demotivated livestock they must be managed to stop them eating everything. Bison do not eat everything they are more selective
@@LeafofLifeWorld They have Premier one mobile solar powered electric fencing. Animals should never just be left to graze. You have to move them in mobile fencing daily.
Considering that the UK wishes to destroy over a million sheep and cows to cut C02 emissions why would the UK reintroduce bison? Large portions of Scotland’s forests have been torn down to make way for wind turbines. The UK doesn’t have forest fires, although we have had some serious Moreland fires where the grasses have burnt due to people having BBQs and not putting the embers out. I’m glad this video recognises the importance of the eco system so few people do these days.
Great video! -congratulations and thanks a lot for sharing it. We recently started a similar project reintroducing taurus in the forest of Sierra de Albarracín, Teruel, Spain. Your video is inspirational to divulge and defend this type of projects for people and for authorities.
The European bison was never in the Iberian peninsula and are not the ones that were painted in Altamira caves. In Iberian peninsula was other race, Bison priscus, that was extinted 12.000 years a go from Iberian peninsula because the increase of temperature in the world. This race disappeared forever around 6.000 years a go from the world. The new bisons are a prive iniciativa that has not public support, even scientists are not agree with this idea to bring foreign species to the Iberian peninsula. Keep in mind that Iberian peninsula is nearly an island, and several species are endemic from here, like the Iberian linx that is sampler than the European linx. What is more, the bison in Spain was in the north of the country, Altamira is in Cantabria for example, but this introduction of a new bison is taking place in the south, that is mucho more hoter and with less vegetation. I hope this information is useful for the Chanel.
If forest fires are a commonplace in this region maybe a kind of "forest fire police 🚨" can help guard the areas constantly. A forest ranger division of the military can help protect the trees 24/7. Drones may be employed to survey the areas as well...keeping the trees safe.
I like proper land management. Credit to Spain for doing some things right. However, a glaring problem they have is a HUGE dependency on foreign energy. It's essential that they resolve this, and I hope they apply high intelligence and care in doing so.
@@jdmortega9121 Not true? In 2019, Spain imports a whopping 69.9% of its energy, and that was actually one of the best years, in that Spain normally imports around 75%. I get the impression that people residing in the EU have no idea that their energy needs, and their inability to provide energy locally, is what has been driving the recent wars and needless deaths. Russia knows Europe can't provide its own energy, so it tries to become a shadow ruler for Europe by blocking off every other form of energy that it can, making Europe increasingly reliant upon Russian energy. This has been going on for decades. Please tell me Europeans understand this. Because I see zero evidence they do.
@@angelruiz4992 That would be great if it happens. My wish come true. However, Europe as a group is reliant on foreign energy for over 50% of its needs, and Spain is one of the worst, needing to import approximately 70% of its energy. As I noted elsewhere, I get the impression that Europeans and the Spanish in particular have no idea they are so dependent on foreign energy, and the global consequences of that. Europeans think these wars are caused by the US for its energy needs, which is false. The US is a major producer of energy, and has major partners in Canada and Mexico. So the US doesn't go to war for its own energy. What's going on is that Russia, since the USSR days, has been trying to get a stranglehold on European energy imports, so Russia can control Europe. That's why Russia and the US have been battling since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It's a series of wars where Russia is trying to control all the pipelines going to Europe. That's what the wars in Libya, Syria, and Ukraine are about. That's why Iran was turned away from the US to Russia. That's why Venezuela was turned socialist, and now has Russian and Iranian military influence. The US doesn't need those oil resources. Europe does.
@@LeafofLifeWorld I do not think so. Lynx is not a bison hunter. They may feed on old and sick bisons. Bison could be nature's engineer but they say too much of everything do more harm than benefit and I think that bison is not an exception.
@@LeafofLifeWorld Oh no, that is a red flag, horrible idea. If they want to work with nature, than go fully natural. Prey and predator. Excluding hunting as a sport. Wolf is the solution but farmers must prepare to guard their live stock.
Iberian lynx only eats rabbit. However, the Iberian wolf population is increasing, even becoming a problem in some areas. There are also bears in the north as said
Very interesting. I too cannot understand the contribution bison makes to prevent wildfires, although wild life conservation itself is a very important act , as the man is responsible for destruction of Wild Life. .***** With Love from Colombo, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. *****
There are wildfires all across the world. Yet we forget to talk about the ecosystems that these plantations are destroying. Even the large desert areas in China where they turned into forestry which pretty much failed, had its own important ecosystems. It doesn't matter what tree species it is, it adds fuel load to the landscape and creates fire bridges along the country.
Understanding the problem so we can understand the solution. Regional mega drought in the southwest, caused by a lot of things but essentially more water is being used and is in one way or another moved out of the region then the amount of water that is re-entered into the region. Conservation has its place but it is not a solution to this problem. The demands on water will not abate without causing complete collapse so the only alternative is to introduce a new source of water. Drawing water from other regional rivers like the Columbia or the Mississippi or Missouri would only move the problem around, draining other regions. The only essentially inexhaustible source of water is the ocean. One thing we need to do is move water from the ocean back inland to places we need it and if we can do that while generating clean energy we have a chance to mitigate climate change and still have a prosperous future. It is really, really hard but it is not impossible. If I could explain my idea in an equation it would go something like. (seawater from the west coast moved inland + converted by combination geothermal/desalination projects = clean water and clean energy.) The biggest idea I am trying to express is tunneling aqueducts from the coast, in this case the west coast of the USA inland to feed combination geothermal power and sea water desalination plants. The idea seems to be so big that no one has considered it possible but I believe it is not only possible but it is necessary. For over a century the fossil water contained in aquifers has been pumped out to feed agriculture, industry and municipal water needs. The natural water cycle cant refill fossil water deposits that were filled 10,000 years ago when the glaciers melted after the last ice age. Without refilling these aquifers there is not much of a future for the region of the United states. As a result ground levels in some areas of the San Joaquin Valley have subsided by more than 30 feet. Similar fossil water depletion is happening in other regions all around the world. TBM and tunneling technology has matured and further developments in the industry are poised to speed up the tunneling process and it's these tunnels that are the only way to move large volumes of water from the ocean inland. The water is moved inland to areas where it can be desalinated in geothermal plants producing clean water and power. In many cases the water will recharge surface reservoirs where it will be used first to make more hydro power before being released into rivers and canal systems. It's very important however to not stop tunneling at these first stops but to continue several legs until the water has traveled from the ocean under mountain ranges to interior states. Along the way water will flow down grade through tunnels and rise in geothermal loops to fill mountain top pumped hydro batteries several times before eventually recharging several major aquifers. What I am proposing is essentially reversing the flow of the Colorado River Compact. Bringing water from the coast of California first to mountaintop reservoirs then to the deserts of Nevada and Arizona and on to Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. This big idea looks past any individual city or states problems and looks at the whole and by using first principles identifies the actual problem and only solution. I would like the opportunity to explain in further detail and answer any questions.

I was curious because European bison look a lot like American bison as to what the difference was. Here it is; American bison are bigger, they are grazers where the European bison browse. The appearance , bone structure, and horns are different. They also have a different number of ribs and lumbar vertebrae. They even fight differently. American bison are easier to tame.
If fires cause soil erosion, why was Spain covered in vegetation subject to regular natural fires before man arrived? A good video but that comment makes no sense.
As explained in the video, its megafires that burn all too soil and when that happens when rain comes it washed it all away eroding the earth, when fire are natural normally smaller are more contained it doesn't burn all top soil and is much more stable
As explained in the video there are still issues with many plantations of eculaptyus across the peninsular, unfortunately Bison have not been released everywhere all over Spain. There are also many factors that contribute to wild fires, it doesn't mean it still isn't trying to be solved
@@LeafofLifeWorld I understand it's the beginning of the journey, but it felt like the video was a bit superficial, that's all. I look forward to a follow up/appraisal of how this is working out, hopefully next year we'll have some data that we can look on. Agree with other comments regarding eucalyptus plantations as being the first obstacle; the second obstacle would be this urbanite, city-centric view on ecology, environment and the rural world...
They are also much more efficient digestion and emit alot less methane than cattle. The cattle industry is the cause of much of the loss of rainforest throughout Central and South America so we gonna look at what is worse?
Added benefit to having Bison back is that Buffalo burgers are awesome! In SD,WY,and MT there are a LOT of Buffalo repopulation efforts and I think it’s been mostly positive too. Plus they are really fun to see, until they charge your truck. 😁

Thank you for your support i love sharing stories about regenerative projects like these
As an international forest fire expert, I was in 1998 on the Iberian peninsula. There I learned that the wast majority of forest fires in Italy and Spain were set ablaze by firefighters because they were only paid when there was a fire. So paying the firefighters even when there is no fire seemed to be the best way to preserve nature there.
Totally wrong conclusion, like negotiating with terr0rists and giving in to every whim they ask for to avoid their attacks...
Here in Barcelona there's an initiative of major house consisting on bring back at least one sheepkeepper with kind of 300 living "beeehs" to the mountain of Collserola. The objective is to clear most of the lowest liyer of the forest to prevents forestal fire. It's a bit of non urban style experiment on Bcn.
very interesting i did not know thank you!
0:25 man... thats a lot of people named hector!
The big problem in Portugal is the re-forestation of non-native eucalyptus. Every year many people die but still it goes on.

And also, thank you for your amazing videos, it feels good to see such vital improvements be promoted.
0:25 never mind, Hector wasn't gone long.
Hector won't leave hahaha 😆
Very interesting video I never knew any of this about Forests and the Bison in Spain, it is a miracle that Bison held on both in Europe and North America we pretty much made them extinct so sad. I am pleased we in the UK will get Bison back I hope they are well protected
With bison there must also come wolves and other large predators to keep the herd in check. It's good from an ecological perspective, but what will they common citizens and farmers think of the reintroduction of apex predators?
the iberian lynx is already there. also they will practice sustainable hunting most likely
In spain there's already a lot of complains and movements against the reintroduction of wolves and bears, so yeah it's not going to be easy
I love this channel!

I love it, and they're such beautiful creatures!
Plant a tree for every time she says "Spain"
Nicely narrated. Detect a slight London influence?
Excellent!
Bison are more efficient and produce less methane than livestock. The UK want them to increase biodiversity in monoculture tree plantations
More like land management but accuse the public for having a bbq and causing the fires. Burning moorlands has happened for hundreds of years
Forest/European bisons have been reintroduced in the UK. I read that in the Guardian. They help to keep the forest in a better shape.
Do we think this is about Spane ?

She should have said "Spain" more...
🤣
Please continue making positive videos. Already fed up about news focusing on human demise😮💨
I like proper land management. Credit to Spain for doing some things right. However, a glaring problem they have is a HUGE dependency on foreign energy. It's essential that they resolve this, and I hope they apply high intelligence and care in doing so.
That is not true Spain has excess energy even gas for 70 years , plenty of minerals , here is not explored anything unfortunately
Have u hear of solar and eolic energy??, cause Spain soon will produce all of our energy from them
@@jdmortega9121 Not true?
We can thank Poland for saving and expanding the European Bison ranges.
California needs to do this.
What about carnivores? They are important to keep the herbivores under control if I am not mistaken.
There some Iberian lynx out there. i think they also do controlled hunting
@@LeafofLifeWorld I do not think so. Lynx is not a bison hunter. They may feed on old and sick bisons. Bison could be nature's engineer but they say too much of everything do more harm than benefit and I think that bison is not an exception.
@@igorbukovy4313 they have some bears but ultimately I think they want people to make hunting sport, its eco tourism

I too cannot understand the contribution bison makes to prevent wildfires, although wild life conservation itself is a very important act , as the man is responsible for destruction of Wild Life. .*****
With Love from Colombo, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰.
It would help if the farming between trees was no-till with savanna-type tree management
No till is better for the soil for sure
@@LeafofLifeWorld yup, you get it, soil health is everything
I have lived here in Spain for 22 years and have seen none of the reforestation mentioned in this video

Maybe talk to your local government?
Wait, how many Hectors were those? And how many Fectors contributed to that?

I was curious because European bison look a lot like American bison as to what the difference was. Here it is; American bison are bigger, they are grazers where the European bison browse. The appearance , bone structure, and horns are different. They also have a different number of ribs and lumbar vertebrae. They even fight differently. American bison are easier to tame.
I rather doubt that grazer vs. browser is a valid difference between European and American as the Wood bison seems to be quite a browser too...
Yes there are differences European is smaller and prefers forests apparently tho it seems like they like grasses too.

Should do this for California fires
So the bison number was down to 50. Wow.

my thoughts exactly
Now in August 2022: This video hasn't aged well at all
As explained in the video there are still issues with many plantations of eculaptyus across the peninsular, unfortunately Bison have not been released everywhere all over Spain.
Agree with other comments regarding eucalyptus plantations as being the first obstacle; the second obstacle would be this urbanite, city-centric view on ecology, environment and the rural world...
the only problem is bizon are methane emitters fueling the problem that is causing the desertification
They are also much more efficient digestion and emit alot less methane than cattle. The cattle industry is the cause of much of the loss of rainforest throughout Central and South America so we gonna look at what is worse?
